National day of prayer

Thursday is the national day of prayer. Its not a government thing, so there's no church and state deal going on.
Ive never really paid much attention to it. Just seemed too religious to me.
But, this year I have been asked to participate. Ill be saying one of the prayers.
So yall can come and throw tomatoes or whatever. :)
It's at Wilson Park at noon. Theyre is a free lunch afterwards. Porkburgers i believe?

I'd never had a pork burger before coming to Arkansas City. I've had several firsts since coming here, and Thursday will be another one.

There are several areas to be prayed over. One of those is media, and that's the one they chose me for.
But they don't mean just newspapers. They mean all forms of media - entertainment, movies, art and all that too.

Our travel guide also comes out tomorrow. Lots of okie-related material.

Interesting choice for food. Pork.
They should have just put up signs: no Jews or Muslims. Christians only.

cute.
so i guess at ALL jewish and muslim events, they say no christians allowed?
some people can find a negative no matter what the subject.

they could come and not eat, or eat other stuff.

what about vegetarians, surely they will be offended.... :)

Anonymous said...

The reason for us not eating pork is religious. Old Testament dietary laws.

"some people can find a negative no matter what the subject."

You've gotta be kidding me. Whoever decided to serve pork at a prayer meeting was either intentionally insulting the jews and muslims who might attend or is the dumbest person in the world.

Traveler Editor said...

Ok, but you are really offending the vegetarians by not even mentioning them.
how insensitive can you be?

Today is May Day, or Beltane, a cross-quarter day - which is a very special holiday to Pagans.
Many pagans are vegetarians.

And you didnt even think of them did you?

Leviticus 11:1:

"The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat:"

This is the same Lord that gave the same Moses the Ten Commandments. A day of prayer and you serve pork?

The Holy Bible does not tell people to be vegetarians. It does tell people to not eat pigs.

I'm sure you will find Christian people at the meeting that say that the words in the Bible are exactly the words of God and are to be strictly obeyed, just as Jewish people believe.

I presume they refer to that Bible in their national day of prayer.

It's intentional bigotry. Or really dumb. Sometimes it is hard to tell which it would be in Ark City.

Anonymous said...

james, suggest they serve fish and loafs of bread, and see if the negativity continues. If it does only in Ark City.

Anonymous said...

im sure they would still find fault somehow.

Anonymous said...

I know you want to dismiss this as negativity and nothing more, but that is ignorant of the issue and it would NEVER be done in a bigger city. If you don't understand the problem and pay attention, you might learn something here.

Even though there is no restriction against drinking alcohol in the Bible, and Jesus turned water into wine to help out a wedding party, religious groups would never, ever consider offering free beer after a prayer meeting.

If the prayer meeting includes all, which I think they said it did, then why would they serve a meat that is prohibited by religious restrictions for Seventh Day Adventists, Jews, and Muslims, especially when there are plenty of other options available?

They might as well offer free bus rides down to the casinos.

There are plenty of Adventists, Jewish and some Muslim families that live in Ark City

You would think someone in charge of a religious meeting would have sufficient ecumenical training to avoid this type of gooberville goof-up.

yea how thoughtless ... offering a free lunch to people AFTER something that was open to the public.

what WERE they thinking !!!!

Anonymous said...

It was well intentioned to serve lunch.

The road to perdition....

The lunch was a good idea. Serving pork at a multi-denominational prayer meeting was not well thought out.

They should know better.

"Peter's Vision"
Actually you might be right on track.
You took the long way around it but - There is no POWER in a vision that can't be shared.
It can only be done when people can come together!
There is no Power where people find fault, want their way, or look for differences as a way to disrupt unity!

Anonymous said...

Well, let's hope then that no one mentions Jesus Christ either or we'll have another problem!!!!!!

We can't make everyone happy -- don't take away our freedoms because you 'MIGHT' be offended. I don't take away yours. If you don't want pork -- DON'T EAT IT! It's that simple.

Anonymous said...

It also says in the bible not to call anyone else Father -- do you call your dad your father?

Jesus said, "And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven" (Matthew 23:9).

There are many literal things that can be taken from the bible and many things that changed in translation. Obviously there is alot of ways to view it or we wouldn't have so many religions.

I won't push my beliefs on you if you don't take away my rights and beliefs to please yourself.

I have went to church all my life -- and honestly -- I didn't know Jewish people didn't eat pork!! Something to think about before jumping to conclusions about what food is being served!!!

Anonymous said...

As Jesus said, Thee without sin cast the first stone.

Anonymous said...

"I didn't know Jewish people didn't eat pork!!"

You're kidding, right?

That just doesn't sound Kosher to me.

Traveler Editor said...

I think the complaint about pork would be a bigger deal in a larger city.

Can you give me the names and phone numbers of three families that did not go because of the pork?
ok, how about two?

If you can Ill give the names the ministerial alliance so they can call and apologize.

Anonymous said...

Let's see: The Seventh Day Adventist Church is in town, most of the Jewish faith go to Temple in Ponca City. You could start there. And don't be silly: nobody wants to be a poster child for this one, so no, I will not post their names.

I really doubt that anyone is looking for any apology, maybe just a little forethought the next time.

The purpose of the blog is to try somehow to get people to think.

Traveler Editor said...

I agree, but its still pretty obvious the intent here.
I dont think you are really concerned about those poor offended people.
You may email me privately with their names, if you know them.

It just amazes me that any mention of anything church related gets an immediate attack.

Why the attack?

Anonymous said...

Interesting thing is any comment here is called negative and opposed. There is never any: "oh, never thought of that,.. good idea next time" instead, we argue whether Pagans (whatever that means) are vegetarians.

The intent is to open minds and become a little more conscious of other faiths and maybe bring them together too.

if i thought that was honestly your intent, i would be more concerned.
the posters on here immediately attack at any mention of any christian religion... no one objected to the pagan stuff ...
your intent is to cause trouble and be divisive.

if you are seriously concerned about offending people of other religions, why dont you call the people who put it on.
i had nothing to do with putting it on at all. i would be interested in what they say.
and im still waiting for you to name two people who were offended ... ok, name one :)

and its not my fault if you dont know the pagan religion...
maybe a little studying on your part?

Anonymous said...

All I know is Pagan is used as a perjorative to describe those of another religion or belief, like the word heretic. I didn't know there was a Pagan religion or pagan church. News to me. Where is it?

Anonymous said...

It is like reciting a Te Deum to enlighten Ark Citians so I won't.

Too tedious.

Let me see, Why would they have pork offered in a farming community like the one we live in? Could it be that the food was more than likely a donation and the kind soul that donated it was a hog farmer? OR Could it be that with the price of beef nowdays that pork was the only answer for feeding the masses...yes, I guess there are those who are offended. But I can't believe that this was a "set up" to make Jews, Muslems or Pagens to feel slighted. Next time they will have to advertise a kosher blessed beef burger with veggie kabobs on the side cook out and maybe every one will be happy except the athiest that don't believe in God or Alah or Budda or who ever your higher power is. NOW I guess we can see why there have been holy wars over the past. Sheesh. Can't we all just get along?

Anonymous said...

Well i just want to start off by saying that if you cant even be as great ful to have a food offering from thesees good citizens here in ark city then go to f'n chilis or wherever you wanna go to not eat pork its not all about you (jews) us as christians dont knock your belies so leave it alone this is the whole reason that jesus died is yes 1 for our sins and the other was sheer stupidity of closed minded individuals as your selves so next time bring you own food or go eat out!
Dont be ungreatful and then try and call yourself a christian - or better yet why dont you jews have your own prayer day???

ohh on another note i really thought that it was crappy not to include our local and nationwide firefighters as well as law inforsement in our prayers it seems to be that the only thime they are aknowledged is when people need them and then other times they are the (PIGS)- so tell me what was to day all about any ways? IT WAS PRAYER DAY - WOW not a local bitch fest!
may god bless you all -

Anonymous said...

Its prayer day people quit being so ungreatful just go eat out and take one for the team like all the rest of us seem to have to do for your relegious beliefs- if its not one thing its another i think that you all need to really read your bible and remember that ou are held accountable for all whom you cast that stone towards ou are no better than the romans who did what they did to our savior- we are to be good to our neighbors and give ourselves fully to be a witness to the lord - do you all not sin??? nope dont think so! so LEAVE IT ALONE GEEEESE!

Anonymous said...

I can't believe that there is even an issue over food here! How silly of you to miss the whole point of prayer day! If you're worried about where you're going to get your next free meal, try somewhere where you're not so offended!
As for the Muslims belief's or rituals, who gives a crap! last I checked, Iraq and Iran we're still open for them to come settle! Heck, I know several who will even help them pack and go to the country of their choice where their beliefs are practiced! You all are taking advantage of our freedoms here in America! Last I checked, this country was founded on Christian principles, so leave our's alone and practice your own!

Pagan has many meanings, often pergorative, but there are groups that wear the name proudly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paganism

Pagan, from Wikipedia

Paganism (from Latin paganus, meaning "country dweller, rustic") is a word used to refer to various religions and religious beliefs from across the world. It is a term which, from a Western perspective, has modern connotations of spiritualist, animistic or shamanic practices or beliefs of any folk religion, and of historical and contemporary polytheistic religions in particular.

The term can be defined broadly, to encompass the faith traditions outside the Abrahamic monotheistic group of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The group so defined includes many of the Eastern religions, Native American religions and mythologies, as well as non-Abrahamic ethnic religions in general. More narrow definitions will not include any of the world religions and restrict the term to local or rural currents not organized as civil religions. Characteristic of pagan traditions is the absence of proselytism and the presence of a living mythology which explains religious practice.[1]

The term "pagan" is a Christian adaptation of the "gentile" of Judaism, and as such has an inherent Christian or Abrahamic bias, and pejorative connotations among Westerners,[2] comparable to heathen, and infidel, mushrik and kafir (كافر) in Islam. For this reason, ethnologists avoid the term "paganism," with its uncertain and varied meanings, in referring to traditional or historic faiths, preferring more precise categories such as polytheism, shamanism, pantheism, or animism; however others criticise the use of these terms, claiming that these are only aspects that different faiths may share and do not denote the religions themselves.

Since the later 20th century, "Pagan" or "Paganism" has become widely used as a self-designation by adherents of Neopaganism.[3] As such, various modern scholars have begun to apply the term to three separate groups of faiths; Historical Polytheism (such as Celtic polytheism and Norse paganism), Folk/ethnic/Indigenous religions (such as Chinese folk religion and African traditional religion), and Neo-paganism (such as Wicca and Germanic Neopaganism).

PAGAN = People Against Goodness And Normalcy! Doesn't anyone watch movies? haha

"What, five thousand of you, and not one of you packed a F@^#% sandwich for the day? I know... LET ME GET IT! I DIDN"T COME HERE TO BE JESUS THE MIRACLE CATERER."

-the late Sam Kinison

I do think it was just a stupid oversight that they chose pork. Maybe they will think a little harder next time. I'm sure if it were something that offended your beliefs, maybe beer, then you would be offended too. Me, I eat what I want because there is no god.

i am glad they sevved pork , more things should be like that , if you dont like it dont go , its that simple , if the song on the radio offends you turn it off , you rights stop where mine start , so deal with it , or BE WHERE YOUR FLAG FLIES ,

"Sometimes it is hard to tell which it would be in Ark City."

Not really.

Anonymous said...

You couldn't serve beef either, it would offend the hindus!

I think some people need to get a life.

Anonymous said...

That is stupid. Arguments to the contrary, you don't have to worry about Hindus, Nordic Pagans German Neopagans or Celtic Druids at a Bible prayer meeting in Arkansas City. The Bible means nothing to them.

SDAs are kicked out of the (Christian) church if they eat pork. Jews and Muslims regard pork as unclean meat and take it seriously. The Bible tells them not to eat pigs.

It was an ignorant oversight and nobody will admit it.

It's easy. Admit it and go on.

Audi.

Anonymous said...

next year, we need to slaughter a bunch of pigs and take their blood and entrails and spread them out all around the perimeter of the city to keep the damn muslims out. I hope the Jews were offended by the tasty porkburgers. I think if they knew that it kept muslims away they wouldn't have a problem with it since they dislike muslims more than we do. But, I hope the bahai's and muslims were deeply and personally offended. we don't want them here anyway. and you are right, we sure as heck wouldn't want to offend the hindus with beef. can you imagine, they must weep every time they pass mcdonald's. who wants to go in on some signs at the entrances letting the muslims know we don't want them here?

Anonymous said...

Yes, but how do you really feel?

Anonymous said...

Wow, what great christian attituudes you muslim haters have. Your god must be so proud. Insignificant speck that he is.

All praise be to Allah! (sp?)

Anonymous said...

you people are being ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

What would the boo birds have criticized if there had been no porkburgers?
Im sure you would have found something.

Is there a class or something you take to learn how to be so negative?

I might sign up.

Anonymous said...

"next year, we need to slaughter a bunch of pigs and take their blood and entrails and spread them out all around the perimeter of the city to keep the damn muslims out."

You are a sick individual, if you even tried to do what you are saying here I wouldn't even come to your town. Although from all of the whining and fussing I see through out this online version of the paper I am not sure it would even take "pig guts" to make me come to that assumption. You are a fine example of someone I would want to point out to my children, a perfect example of who I WOULD NOT want them to be like.
You sicken me to think that we actually have people that would think the things you have written. Am I muslim or jewish?....NO, if you call yourself christian I don't even want to be called that either. Shame on you!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

What it comes down to is you have people who interpret bible teachings to prohibit eating pork. If you are going to have a bible meeting, then maybe you shouldn't serve pork.

No brainer.

Anonymous said...

what if they just serve burgers next year but don't tell anyone there is pork in them? what you don't know can't hurt you.

Anonymous said...

You inclusivists are a perfect example of what I want to point out to my children not to be like. Your anythinggoes religion is worthless. You are holier than thou and it is disgusting. You pretend not to pass judgement while being more judgemental than anyone. You look down your noses at everyone who you don't think is as educated and worldly as you are. You pull out big important theological words and hope to impress others with your wisdom and piety. You make me sick. I wish I could be as perfect as you. Long live Salmon Rushdie.

Anonymous said...

Yes, but how do you really think?
Now don't hold back, tell the rest.

Anonymous said...

Why do you keep asking what they really think? That might be what they really think. Why do you think they call pork the other WHITE meat? I will donate all of my leftover bacon grease to the troops in iraq so that they can coat their bullets in it.

Anonymous said...

There. Now we're really getting somewhere. Just keeping it all bottled up doesn't do any good. Let it out. Don't be embarrassed!

Anonymous said...

You should be embarrassed for asking stupid cutesy questions. This is a serious subject. We don't want terrorists in this country and we need to have the balls to stand up for that. You inclusivist wimps should suck it up or leave like your Hollywood idols promised to do. You have less integrity than they do. At least they pretended to care and said stupid things publicly. All you do is talk on blogs.

Anonymous said...

If it wasn't the porkburgers, they'd find something else to criticize.
Just a smokescreen.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, typical liberal "tolerance". Agree with me or you are inbred, redneck, racist, bigot, white trash, etc. I can hardly wait for the re-education for the great unwashed that is coming. You are going to be told what to drive, eat, wear, and say. You will be told where to go, when to go and if you can go. Progressive = fascist. Personal Liberty is what will be gone after this election. If you think for your self, you will be considered a criminal. When thoughts are outlawed, only outlaws will have thoughts. Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it.
