Here are a few questions. I would like to know our readers' attitudes on a couple things.
Of course, in a perfect world, we would have a big paper full of really interesting, compelling and useful news, and it would be at your door the precise moment you want it there.
But we don't live in a perfect world. Some days are better than others.
So if you had to choose, which would you choose?
More in depth local stories and a little late, or ... not as in depth but on time.
Perfectly edited but not as many stories, or more stories with a comma out of place here and there.
Some stories from Winfield and surrounding areas, or state and national news.
More stories or more photos ?
Let me know what you think.

More local news. In depth where necessary.
Poor grammar often means misunderstandings so doesn't even have a place. With Spellcheck there is absolutely no reason for it.
Photos are fine, but we need more detailed information. Your misprints and mistakes lead to more bad rumors and gossip than anything else in town.
News from around the county is great. Any further out and we get it faster from TV and Radio.
Another nice thing would be if you follow up more often. Between the lack of information and misinformation all of the important stories need to be updated and corrected at least once within a few days of the original.
It's too bad the reporters don't seem to do much research. Gathering the surface information just doesn't seem to answer the questions. It seems to create more confusion in most cases. Shouldn't a story have the why's and how's answered?
I think we all would like to know more about what is going on around us.
Meaningful news!! How about the TLC Vet Clinic problem? It effects an Ark City doctor, his wife and others. It is even a Federal case thru the DEA but nothing in the paper. However, I have learned a great deal about china painting for which I thnk you.
Whats up with the vet clinic ?
I dont know about it.
I sent an email to your address, but it was returned

I would like to see more in depth, and I also think you should report more in depth on what the people representing us and working for the city are up to. I feel the newspaper caters to them and will not print anything negative about the city. There is a lot of positive, but the citizens also have a right to know the negative and deserve a paper that keeps an eye on the public figures~it helps keep them in check sometimes. The local police force is always shown in a positive light also, but that is not always true either. My case in point here would be: the young man who was chased to his death a year or more? ago (on the north end of town). I don't know him or his family, but if I were a reporter I would have run with that story~the police were familiar with him and could have caught up with him at a later time, the chief said his officers did nothing wrong? how about a car chase through a residential area at speeds up to 80 miles per hour??? for a guy seen doing donuts in a parking lot??? what if he would have wrecked his car into a home and more deaths would have occured, would the police still be in the right??? I seriously doubt they would have gotten away with it then! I still hope to this day that the young man's family gets an out of town lawyer to sue the police force here, there is no excuse for what happend then~again, donuts in a parking lot are not a threat to public safety and it was not warranted, right, or just, it was just pathetic. Yet, the paper did no in depth story on that or questioned the police force motives. Our police force is out of hand, spending way too much of our tax dollars (go up to city hall and ask to look at their budget if you don't agree), they are supposed to protect and serve, not seek out and harass, which many of them are known to do and do well, and that is one thing you could start paying attention to and report more in depth. City hall? go look at the spending there, why does the superintendent of streets and parks need to go all the way to Houston for training or any other funtion on our tax money? there is plenty of training held close by all the time for the different departments. And you may want to look at the city's starting wages for the lower on the ladder and then compare the city manager's salary AND benefits(and why do we need to supply him a car??? he's only 5-10 minutes away from work no matter where he lives inside the city limits and the police chief is supplied one too~WHY??? Our city needs to run like one, not like some corporation with tons of money. Please, compare the manager's salary to other city's of our size, among other things. A good newspaper looks into things like this for their paying citizens and taxpayers, but I feel you are afraid to question any of them. Start being investigative and maybe more will want to have your paper at their door, I know I would.
, it was jo in depth story on that or questioned the police force motives. Our police force is out of
well actually, on the young man that died, we had a very long and in depth report about pursuits ... we even won a state press association award for it .
we actually won first place in the kansas press associatino's in depth news reporting categeory for a different story this year.
we do report a lot on the city commission and other commissions ... and often in depth.
we dont report a lot of what is just rumors .. simply because they are not true
i do appreciate constructive criticism but i do wish people had the guts to put their names on teir posts .... i dont bite "\:)
id really like to have 4-5 more reporters,
we do what we can with the stuff we have to use ...
youre welcome to come and do my job any day and see if yo can do better :)
This is a no brainer. I say more pictures. Actually all pictures, like a picture book so we don't have to read it. A story is pretty easy to tell with pictures if it has no depth, so you should be okay going with this approach.
yall didn't answer the questions.
jj I think you have done a lot of things for our paper, it is still small, sometimes the kansas winds make curb trash out of them, but I honestly feel you are giving the towns' people more opportunities to speak their minds. More letters to the editors and not limiting as you have in the past. If a person is interested in the topic, I disagree with you that they won't read the entire content of an interesting, lengthy letter. I know I read them and get more out of them because you are allowing them to express entire thought processes instead of trying to condense and perhaps loose the entire meaning to them. I enjoy your commentary articles on Saturdays also. You are straight forward with your thoughts and I always like that. Do feel that some issues you are intimidated with making to many comments, but we live in a world of "freedom of speach" but watch what you say!! The anonymous letters, well wish we could sign, but that also puts you in this town and you get slammed dunked and in certain cases become the target of those who are of "Authority". Sorry
I would love to see more follow-ups on news of interest to us locals, such as accident victims and how they are doing, but you have that great "privacy act" that pertains to what they want it to pertain too! I truly hope to hear a lot more about TLC. That is a tragedy waiting in the wings for both of them and I know a lot of us are interested in what happens. She is (was?) a great vet and well liked and respected. Me, I am in "wait and see" mode and hope that articles remain factual. I have formed no opinions at this point, the facts just aren't all there yet. Remember, in our society (if you believe in this!) you are innocent until proven guilty. If she has fallen victim to the ugly monster of drug useage, I sincerely "PRAY" for a speedy recovery and another chance to resume her career that she is so good at doing. She deserves that. Others in this community have committed crimes, received "light" sentences and resumed their lives (totally??). One never knows what truly goes on in a persons' private life that they should fall victim. Remember, alcohol is just another source of hiding from reality. I also agree with the first comment I read tonight that our city spending is out of line for the people living heres abilities and that we need to change this. We need ordinances (laws) that are more specific and not vague with loopholes that can be used for some but not others. I agree with the police chase he/she spoke of. I also remember the other incident of the two boys who ingested "a few"pills, but died. They where taken to the hospital, but not detained long enough to save their lives. What happened to the "probable cause" to hold them until they where sure they had, indeed, just ingested a couple of pills? When an incident of that nature occurs and they are released, one taken to jail, what happened to the observation (suicide watch cell)cell where that boy was observed for at least a 24 hour time period? Many questions, no good answers. All in all, jj, I think you have made your paper far more interesting, I chuckle that your staff is human and makes typigraphical errors (makes me feel better when I write!. Rumors in this town, well you will never curb that one, this is a city of gossip, but so is this world. Factual articles, with research and follow-ups could help that, but again, you can only repeat or print the information you have available at the time. If it is wrong, step up to bat and own up to making a mistake, there is no harm done then, but if you sit back, the harm remains. I am not too interested in news "around" the world. We get plenty of that on tv and what is going on in far away towns in Ks. isn't too exciting to me either. I love your blogs and think it is a great thing you have given the people of this town to spout off with no holes barred. It is great and something the Traveler has never offered before. Guess some of my comments are in reference to the third blog I read. OOPPSS I just messed up! Beat me!! jj, keep up the good work, give us all the info you can, introduce to the public some of our ordinances that are vague, are issues in this town and how or what can be done to make them more specific. There are many ordinances in effect that are called as they see it because they can do it. And, keep this in mind cell phone users: every time you make a call to the police dept. because someone throw out a "cup" in the dark and you have no vehicle discription or tag info, the police are obliged to respond to these calls. That is a waste of taxpayers monies and the police officers time and wear and tear on vehicles that have to be maintained or replaced. I have heard so many "stupid" calls by people with cell phones that it makes me sick to my stomach! Our officers are here to "protect" us and our city from criminal activity, not to chase all over town looking for non-discript vehicles with stupid complaints. Get off your duff, pick up the cup and call it a night!
