music on the river ... like you dont expect :)

Tonights city commission meeting did get interesting.
KACY wants to have a rock and roll concert in August, a listener appreciation concert.
He hopes to bring in a national band - probably an 80s style band.
This is down on the river where I had my music festival last year, and plan to have it again.

The only twist is that the folks at KACY want to sell beer, to have a beer garden.
The precedent was set at arkalalah last year, so the city really cant turn him down.
But there are hoops to jump through and paper work to deal with, permits etc., so a lot will depend on timing.

The beer debate may start up again. Could be entertaining.

The more things we have down there the better.

Im working on my festival that is Oct. 4-5, Still need helpers.

More power to KACY! Good job!

The beer thing, oh no, not again!

be interesting to see how people react.
I dont think the city can turn it down, they set the precedent last year at Arkalalah.

One thing to consider is, the beer company will be paying for the band. This will put a fair amount of money into the city.

Also beer, as well as stronger beverages, are readily available all over town.

It does raise some sticky legal questions though.

I hope the folks at KACY are able to pull this show off.

Where exactly is this place where the concert is located?

I think we need more river access all around town. How dumb is it that we have all this natural resource, and can't even access most of it without a 4x4.

And I'll add this. I just got back from Rocklahoma, and there were so many drunks there I think the cops ran out of handcuffs. I don't see the draw of getting so wasted that you can't even remember the show the next day.

where the meat packing plant used to be, by the levee. Northeast of the bridge on south summit.

People complain that there isn't anything to do in AC most of the time. This proposed concert will be great and give people a chance to get out and do something in the middle of summer.

I am all for the beer garden. I just hope people will be responsible and go and have a good time.

As one who regularly visits First Council Casino on weekends for the live entertainment, I am excited for something like this down at the river.

Good luck KACY....I hope you can pull it off!!!

So, is it on the North side of the dike? Not really "On" the river, as you can't even see the river from there. Might as well be at Curry field. Hopefully i am misunderstanding.

Traveler Editor said...

thats right, its not really "on" the river, but i is close.
curry field is an idea that should be explored.
but that area "off" the river is a great spot and isnt being used for anything.

I still think it would be fun to have some canoe races, sometime. Also, what is happening with Curry Field?

Traveler Editor said...

nothing yet on curry field
theyll be playing football there this fall.

Does the city have any riverfront property with a good view of the water? It would be cool to have a stage set in front of the river!

Yes, problem is, its on the other side of the levy.
There used to be much more use of the river.
Theres a business waiting for someone to start.
Over at Bricks, in the back, there are pictures of people in Ark City using the river front, canoes, fishing etc.,
NOt sure where that park was, but there is a pic of a doc with canoes and such all around it.
Who will make it happen?

Traveler Editor said...

The city would let someone use the land.
THe city wont do it, but if someone wanted to start something, they could get a lot of help from the city.

Do you mean, the city 'can' help someone.

As for the beer thing, I'm assuming they'll have to card everyone--those over 21 get a wrist band when they pay their cover charge and can buy 2 tickets that they can exchange for beer--then you're pretty much keeping everyone to a 2-beer max. You won't have any wasted folks ruining a good time for everyone else (might be a good idea at Arkalalah too???) Just a random thought...

Traveler Editor said...

The city will help you.
But you have to go by the rules and take care of your part.
They helped me a lot last year with the concert.

good luck kacy. hope it happens. we need stuff like this. just got back from a concert at hays that was well attended. had beer garden also. no problems that im awere(sp) of.

I just meant by 'can', do they have the finances to... ;)

Traveler Editor said...

They dont have the finances.
But there are things they can do for someone. Like letting people use public property, use of equipment - tables, stage, chairs, portapoties - that sort of thing.
So they probably wont be putting any money into anything, but if people come up with the money, there are other kinds of help available through the city.

what if thye have the beer garden but it is off of AC property? isn't that the sticking point? if the beeer was right across the "fence" to the norht wouldn't they be able to have it without any sort of special waver? or, what if they had it on the old walmart parking lot or that big field across from the ac clinic that sybrant i think owns??? in any of those cases they could just apply for the beer from the state isn't that right?

Traveler Editor said...

there is no problem at all really
they just have to fill out the proper paperwork, get the permit.
whether its city or state, im not sure it matters

I think they should move the museum into town where it might get more visitors. Is there a building that the city owns in town that would be a good spot? The old library comes to mind first, but I believe roger sparks owns that. Good location though.

What kind of help do you still need for your concert?

I don't understand how two commu7nities with good size rivers do not capitalize on them. My family and I used to drive several hours to float the rivers every summer. I was excited when we moved here because of the rivers. Then that excitement turned to disappointment because we can't use the rivers.

Traveler Editor said...

For the concert, I need to raise money. Lots of it :)
THats the big thing right now.
I also need to start planning things and for people to take over certain areas, such as parking, seating, coordinating stuff with the city, meals for the bands, coordinating the rentals of generators. Get stuff like flyers printed,

Money is the thing right now.
I need someone to sell ads for the t-shirt.

Send me an emal about that.

As for the rivers, ive said the same thing for years.
Its a wasted resource.

It's all about attitudes. This is the type of thing that could be a catalyst for positive change in Ark City.

You've definitely got to get the ACPD with some training on this one. I remember in the past, quite a number of years ago, that they would do deliberate sweeps through the bar that was next to the police station to see if anyone was drinking booze, and how much, and in a way that was almost harassment.

They used to tightly scrutinize the car show participants in a way that was well beyond how they would be viewed as normal drivers.

I think all of that is over now, but the PD could make it or break it.

It doesn't really matter if the participants have one beer too many during the event, as long as they are sober when they drive. Everyone should encourage responsibility, and the people serving should need to use dramshot evaluation (not overserving anyone who appears to be intoxicated). And no glass.

Beer sales and music events go together uneventfully in other places and it can happen in Ark City too.

What could be better than sitting on the lawn chair with the family, listening to a legacy revival sound-alike and look-alike band in Ark City with a cold beer. Where do I apply for the hot-dog concession stand permit?

“One great rock show can change the world.” -- Dewey Finn.

It might also influence Ark City for the better.

Go get-em KACY!

I just don't understand why they have to have alcohol. I listen to music all the time and a beer doesn't taste better with the music and the music doesn't sound better with a beer. BYOB!

Anonymous said...

It is obvious why they need beer. Bands cost big money, in order to be able to bring in the band the beer sales would help offset the cost, and keep the event free. Kacy is trying to give us a free show!

We Love You KACY go get them

I have an off topic question:

Is the Traveler going to report on the Ark City Industries board Meeting that will be held July 30th at noon? Afterall, the Traveler holds shares of ACI, so maybe we can get an inside scoop of what really goes on at these so called "secret" meetings.

Traveler Editor said...

From what I have heard. At one time a Traveler reporter did attend those meetings.
There was a conflict between the paper and ACI over something at a meeting and the Traveler was booted.
That was several years ago.
Im going to look into it and see what the "temperature" is these days.
