city stuff

Greetings all.
There's lots of information on the city's web site. A recent addition is a copy of the bills the city paid over the month. Want to know what they spent on light bulbs? snacks? electricity? ... It's all there.
Here is a link

http://arkcity.org/DocumentView.asp?DID=1566

You can also get there by going to their site - www.arkcity.org - click on City Government, then on document center, then click on city commission.
then click on Scheduled Payment List.

Their web site isn't the most user friendly. You do have to fish around a bit, but its no more difficult than anyone else's web site. (I went to a seminar on web sites last week, so I'm seeing how sites could be a lot more user friendly.)

Last month the city spent $232,279.20

Its Monday so it must be time for a city commission worksession meeting.

Another cool thing on the city's web site is the meeting agenda, along with an information packet. The packet has some background on every agenda item. It's located at the same place as the list of payments.

You can also look at previous agendas there.

Tonight is the work session, where items are discussed. Most of the time this is more interesting than the regular meeting, which is on tuesday.
Often they discuss things not on the agenda, and take no action. It gives an idea of where they are headed on various issues.

Tonight's agenda includes
Introducing the new director of building, planning and codes.
Awarding a big on a vacant lot on S. Summit.
Considering renewal of beer licenses for 2008.
Award construction bids for Radio Lane sewer line repair.
Public hearing and budget amendment for project Independence Fund.
Consider engineering assesment of Walnut River sewer line collapse.

Other itemes by city manager or commissioners.
(this gets interesting at times)

Hey, while your looking into city stuff, you may want to check out the most recent happening! The city employees are trying to get a union, and are thrilled about it. We are tired of the city being run like a big business, with only the top dogs getting all the raises and special treatment, while our raises and bonuses are cut and insurance is doubled, and then we get to watch Doug Russel get a big fat 8,000 dollar raise. Well, it's all about to stop, the union will help us get what WE deserve, instead of those above us gaining from our hard work at low wages! So, keep your eys open, it's going to get interesting very soon. Hip Hip Hooray we will have the upper hand soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

glad to hear it, the city has been screwing their employees over for years now and getting away with it, hope you get the union voted in, you will be glad you did

Please do not discuss the employee Union in a public fourm, you are not helping our cause by tipping our hand before we have everything in place, nor should you show your dissatisfaction with our employer as a representative of us all.
That will be the Job of our Union rep not yours, if you have the desire to make iresponsible public outcrys you know who to talk to! do not do it here

concerning the big box store, the gentleman who wrote in had a good point about the other strip malls still sitting empty. just look, where blockbuster is the other stores still sit empty, the new one up on the hill still just had a phone store and the others empty last time i looked, and we have two other strip malls that have been around for many years, and they even have some stores sitting empty at times. we are a small, and dying town, and the city needs to preserve and take care of what we have and quit wasting money on pipe dreams, catering to new businesses or trying to annex more people ! they cant even take care of what they have, look at our streets canals city owned buildings and grounds, etc, and they are now even taking away from their own city employees! just look at what the city spent BEFORE those doctors even had their loan for a new hospital! now it looks like there will be no hospital but what about all those tax dollars YOUR TAX DOLLARS they wasted on that pipe dream, which they wouldn't have done for the average tax payer by the way, just those with money and influence like a few select doctors here in town. i wish the traveler would go up there a find the exact dollar amount and do a story on that for the tax payers because they deserve to know how much the city wasted on that venture i bet it would be close to half million at least if not a million, so why doesnt the traveler look into that and maybe the state of kansas should look into it also, how can they blow our money like that without telling us the people in this town deserve to know about this huge waste of tax dollars that was done without them knowing and for what? nothing? that is a huge amount of money that could have been put to good use where it was REALLY needed. come on traveler, get busy and report on items like this that the tax payers need information on be a REAL newspaper for once
