The allergies have calmed down some. I may try that buckwheat honey someone suggested. The only thing ive ever done that worked was get shots twice a week when i lived in south carolina.
When you move to a new place - Kansas - the stuff in the air etc., changes, so whats in the shots wont work anymore, and its kinda controversial in medical circles, so most insurances don't cover it.
Anyways, there have been a couple of interesting conversations on the blogs while I wasn't posting.
On immigration. I would just remind us all that we were all immigrants at one time. Most of us anyway.
While we are talking about ideas for Arkansas City, what if we made Arkansas City into a "little Mexico."
We could advertise in major Mexican cities, help them get here, offer various services. Several businesses could spring up as support services.
Could be a boom to the local economy.
I really don't think they are stealing jobs. I have heard that Creekstone buses Hispanics in from Wichita to work, I dont know if that is true, but I intend to find out. I want to know more about our employment situation.
Do we really have a shortage of workers?
Someone aught to check. Maybe the newspaper? :) :)
The school bond issue is becoming a big deal too.
Ive been looking around at the schools. We have good schools. They win awards. But the buildings are really not all that good. They look pretty bland to me, and even run down at times.
I know there is a lot of nostalgia for Curry Field, but ... its not a very nice facility. Im sure it was 50 years ago, but it doesn't compare with other facilities in the area.
Go to Derby, Wellington, or gads, even Winfield.
When I was a sports writer in carolina, I always of course, went to lots of athletic facilities. I couldnt help forming an opinion of variuos towns based on what I saw.
Even before Carolina, I was in Arkansas. I remember in Arkansas seeing a ladder up to the press box at once place, and decided that I wouldn't bother.
But athletic facilities do say something about a town or a city.
It speaks to quality of life.
and it speaks to pride of the people involved.
Im not for more taxes but we do need to do something for the schools.
I don't have any kids in the schools here, and wont.
But, at one point I was a kid in school, and someone paid taxes to pay for that.
Thats it for a Sunday night.

Turn Ark City into a 'little Mexico'??
You mean like they did in some Texas towns, South Florida and Hazelton PA?
Sounds great! Get a majority in here, vote them into the council seats and lets see some real progress happen!!
BTW, I was being serious. The hispanics I have met are respectable hard working folks who own their homes rather than rent.
I have to admire them because they are doing so in a town that doesn't seem to want them here even though they contribute to our economy and not on the welfare gravy train.
Anonymous 9:52AM
I don't think you understand the situatuion here.
With few execptions, I don't think that the community doesn't want hispanics here.
I have no problem with the hard working hipanics who are here to better themselves, and become legal hardworking families, and in doing so better this community.
The problem is the ones who write on the walls, engage in illegal activities and in general give their hispanic families a bad rap.
They are no diffrent than the whites, blacks, and asians who engage in illegal activities, and belong to gangs, and in general disrupt the communities in which they choose to hide out in.
In case any of you out there haven't firgured it out yet, for us who were fotunate enough to be born in this country, we are Americans, maybe my grand parents were Irish, or Italian, or Mexican, or Chinese, or Japanese get it yet, we didn't imigrate from those countries, so we aren't from those countries. I want to thank my grand parents for doing it, and doing it right.
I think that is all the people want, is to do it right, join the community, help make this a better place to live, and help us rid ourselves of the trouble makers of what ever heritage.
I agree with you about the troublemakers, but as far as people being ok with hispanics being here, if I knew you face to face, you'd be the first.
I do wish that people [from any country] would come here the legal way. But at the same time I really wish those with a very narrow view would actually get over the prejudice and see just who contributes and who doesn't.
I have been floored by face to face comments and attitudes from 'north end folks' on down.
Maybe Im not helping with my own negativity today, but the attitudes in this town really frustrate me sometimes.
I'll bet when you find out who does the graffiti, you may find that they are white kids in their daddy's farm pickup who are dressing and acting like black rapper gangster wannabees.
There are no gangs in Ark City, just kids playing dress-up. The gangs are a real serious problem and they have no interest in rural Kansas.
The "gangs" in Ark City should be treated for what they are: juvenile delinquent vandals who exist solely because of insufficient parental supervision. Once caught, put them in after school detention. They are nothing to fear.
Ark City has always had them. Remember the soap bubbles at the old fountain at Kansas and Summit?
By the way: If you make them or their parents pay for the damage and have it repaired and done properly by local contractors at their standard prices (that should punish them real good) then it will stop.
Personally, I don't have a problem with immigation or any other ethnic groups. The problem as I see it is the expense we inccur to provide for them even in some cases with options that are not available to our own citizens!
Maybe you can help me with some numbers - 70 cents of every federal tax dollar I pay is non-discretionary (already spent) 30 cents is discretionary. But in reality it is only used to pay the interest on the National Debt!
(deficit).
So all the additional costs associated with both the legal and illegals is done on borrowed money from future generations?
Personally, I wish GWB and Congress would send Cuba, Mexico
etc. some big ole statements for services render to their citizens!
I don't care if they pay in cigars, or tacos or oil!
If they refuse I'd start go after some assets. (Like oil fields etc.)
We probably don't agree - but when the immigrants leave in mass thats when I'd worry - because they found a better deal - or the American Dream is lost for all even the Americans.
If you consider that 22.5% of all revenues received in Cowley County come from welfare, social security, etc and the non-citizens get NONE of this, please explain just how they are draining the community, once again. I guess I just didn't get the point.
Don't tell me it is about educating their kids. I pay school taxes and I don't have kids in AC schools, but I'm not whining.
Don't tell me about medicine. There are PLENTY of AC non-hispanic residents who don't have insurance and the government pays for them.
BTW. They do pay taxes. Both Federal and state. It is withheld justs like yours and mine.
So where is this great expense?
How is it that we are supporting them? Seems they are pulling their own weight and then some.
I don't think the post was specific to Ark City. It was more directed to a Nationwide problem.
Immigration legal and illegal!
So no your not building a boarder wall at your city limits or have the National Gaurd patroling.
But you are paying!
You might have INS visit on occasion - they certainly caught a van full out by Strother Field a few months ago! (wasn't it 15?)
You do provide medical services for them at your emergency room -
as well as anyone non-insurance related they cannot be denied!
Doesn't that contribute to higher insurance premiums and hospital
charges for the insured!
There is additional expense for law enforcement - and the cost to implement the new I.D. and the additional expense as related to the different lanuage.
There is the cost to lost value in real estate in some of the larger Metropolitan Areas and its not all atributed to Hispanics -
I don't hate them or any other group as I said!
As far as food stamps - I'll check but am sure they are eligible!
But, if you want to go further - weren't some of the Asians given Tax free status for seven years?
There is more but you don't like long posts.
Bottom line: As of 2006 each man woman and child in the USA owed $35,000 on the Nation debt. (last I checked - which is a stealth tax).
I am sorry - I thought the earth rotated on its axis - now I know it revolves around Ark City!
Well, you're right. Think globally but act locally. Got it.
The wall.... hmmm...
The wall was stupid in Germany, it is even more stupid in the U.S..
Anybody that wants over the top can do it in about 3 minutes. Geez. It is a wall. What is a ladder?
At least the East Germans knew you needed two walls, a death zone, land mines, machine guns, guard towers, and German Shepherd dogs. (even with that they didn't completely succeed)
If you have ever been to the Ciudad Acuna-Del Rio-Laughlin Air Force Base metro area, you would know that the wall barrier is completely unenforceable and pure foolishness.
It's George Bush's legacy. I predict the metal panels in the wall will be "re-purposed" to roofing material in Mexico in about 5 years. What a complete waste of money that could be used on buying textbooks. Or school breakfasts.
That is the hazard of electing stupid public officials. Let's not make the same mistake twice.
In Ark City if you compare the cost of a hispanic worker and his family with a chronically unemployed able-bodied welfare recipient and his family, I'll go with the hispanic worker ten ways to Sunday.
I grew up in an area in Wichita that was very mixed. There were whites, blacks, hispanics, and orientals. We seemed to blend together and participated in celebrations and whatever with each other.
I now live in an area in Ark City that has hispanics and whites. I respect the hispanic families that live around me. They are all hard working families seeking to have a good life for themselves and their families. I don't know if they are all legally here and am not going to find out. I hope they are or at least working on it.
What I am saying is that I feel everyone deserves a chance in life. If they are not legal they should be or they need to return to their own country. If we moved to their country we would have to abide by that country's rules and so likewise anyone entering America.
Turn Ark City into "Little Mexico"? Help them come here? I just cancelled my subscription!
I don't see a problem with them coming here... LEGALLY!
well the blog is free
but if you cancel you have to pay :)
Their are government studies done on the cost of illegal immigration on the American household. Each American household is currently paying $2500/year to support them. These costs are incurred by health care costs, education expenses (which by the way, also means free/reduced lunches and transportation), court costs, prison expenses, etc. Now, if the amnesty bill is passed they predict this will jump to $5000 per month as many will get on the welfare wagon! Do they file income taxes? Sure, but they claim enough "false" dependents that they get it all back or so their employer will not hold it out at all. As far as social security and medicare, they do help support this cause. When they are given amnesty, they will begin to use this service (deservedly so). Note, that the private Catholic school in town has not seen their enrollment go up due to the Hispanics cominginto town. They would have to help pay for this education, and would not be given free transportation back and forth. Interesting that they chose to drain the public school system instead.
I'll bet when you find out who does the graffiti, you may find that they are white kids in their daddy's farm pickup who are dressing and acting like black rapper gangster wannabees.
+++++++++++++++++++++
I'm sure many citizens of Ark City would prefer to believe this. However, you really should talk to Mr. Sean Wallace or the county attourney about this issue. They would tell you otherwise.
