I think he was pretty interesting. I liked some of the things he said. I didn't think I would but I did.

Anonymous said...

he is very knowledgable and has really studied up on the issues

He kinda scares me, done a little research and he has a rocky past.
Afraid he will bring 1970 mentality to the commission. We need vision, and forward thinkers.

The vision and foward thinkers can still present them with opportuinties. I think there is always too great an expectation that precedes elections. It shouldn't be that way - the search for ideas/opportunites and solutions should be ongoing regardless of who is elected.
I did like his interview and the live blog and radio together is Cool!

I agree KACY (Kanyon) and the live blog is really the best. James and Kanyon should do more together.

Zach Bryant is my hero! Kanyon Ginger is way kewl too!

Zach bryant as a write in for City Commission!!!

Gordon Fry is cool too! Just like on the 70's Show. I like his forethought, and respectable demeanor.

MT

MT Who?

MT Bryant's Building right downtown...now that really sucks!

Maybe ACI could buy the Bryants Hardware builing and put in a nice Bistro.

Or they could make it a warehouse for Sybrant.

Anonymous said...

Those are both excellent ideas. Any possibility of that ACI guys?

Jim would that make a good warehouse?

Dave would that make a good Bistro?

How many square feet is that building?

Heard the roof leaks really bad though. That would be expensive to fix.

Not sure about the windows either, may have to replace some for the new ordinance. guess I will have to look today.

Well I hope someone buys it so we don't have another empty building downtown.

And I pray it will not be another antique junk store or used clothing. Those stores make us look trashy.

Might be a good investment because the building the gun store is in goes with it. The gun guys said they were renting it. Bet they pay $2000 a month rent.

LOL...ya got a stuttering problem there??????

Anonymous said...

This isn't the right blog but, Jay Waren mentioned being on the board for his church, and rec center, but not his being on the boards of ACI and HNB wonder why he didn't mention that.

Anonymous said...

"Bet they pay $2000 a month rent."

You obviously have not rented a place in downtown Ark City lately. If building owners could get 2000 a month rent for retail/office space I guarantee you there wouldn't be as many junky/empty buildings.

This is jumping around a little bit, but has anyone seen Scott Margolius's ad this morning? He seems to be taking credit, or at least in part, for some of the businesses in town. I could be mistaken, but didn't most of those new places and improvements happen or start before he was elected? I don't know. Just asking.

Anonymous said...

They are all still open becasue this commission has kept their heads and made sure that things were running well, that and good business people equal success for all. This is Gordon's page.

Seems like Gordon is a regular Joe.

Will not being one of the three comrades help or hurt?

Without the HNB voting block the leftist traveler ACI and Burford are in trouble!

the Tea-party?

Drew said...

I do not think being a regular Joe is something to aspire to or to support in an election of our leaders. I do not want a average, regular people to lead the city. I would much rather have someone above average at least. Someone successful, intellegent, articulate, with good problem solving skills. Just because you are wealthy now or have a good career does not mean you cannot relate and be empathetic of others. Many successful people are down to earth folks. I honestly would not want an average Joe of Ark City to be in public office. I bet I am in the minority, but think about it a bit please.

Also, all of the candidates are successful more than most. A business owner (McDonald), a man that helps run a successful local company (Margolius), a man in the oil business with interest in a local bank (Warren), a retired fire cheif (Fry), a retired finance man for local banks (Matthews), a retired superintendent of schools (Snell). All pretty exceptional, and not average. But all are good people and can relate and be empathetic to many. They want to help and serve.

Average is not something to aspire to. Excellence is.

"Zach bryant as a write in for City Commission!!!"

WOW, what a great idea. We need people that have run their business in the ground on the city council. People who think outside the box. People who get foreclosed on because they couldn't pay their bills. Sounds like a winner to me.

Drew,

I applaud you for wanting to be more than average. Every person should feel that way. But stating that there are not some school teachers, retail, manufacturing or office workers, or small business owners who are not qualified to sit on the Arkansas City Commission because they were not fortunate enough to inherit wealth, is a gross injustice and gravely insulting to the 'regular Joes and Jos', the true foundation of our community. Many of whom are successful, intellegent, articulate, and have good problem solving skills, all values you approve of in a commission candidate. Unfortunately, you do not associate any of these qualities with someone who is a regular person, although several of the candidates you mention would fall into that category. I agree that 'Average is not something to aspire to. Excellence is'. That statement is for all in our community not a glass ceiling to hold down any with a differing viewpoint.

Frank - I am not sure where I stated this. Which of the candidate inherited wealth and thus are unqualified in your opinion? I think you assumed some things when you read my post. It sounds to me like all the candidates worked for a living.

I like the way Ark City eats it’s own.

The concept of “average Joe” is that they don’t step on one another to get ahead and they will call a spade a spade. Alignment for reasons other than personal gain and being able to agree to disagree are basic concepts have been lost in the name power and greed. This election is about the two opposites. Your claim that Average Joe can’t effectively run anything or that they are of lower intelligence is exactly the point!

Frank or Joe or whatever you want to call yourself
--
I don't really follow the local probate courts, so I can not tell you who has inherited what. Maybe you could enlighten me. Seeing I have been in the area for over 50 years and you are relatively new to the area, I wonder where you are finding your facts or just listening to stories and rumors.

I am certaily for exceptional people leading us. I do think all of the candidates running for office currently are exceptional people. You say I do not like teachers, actually I think Mr. Harmon is a great BOE member, and that Mr. Snell will make a good commissioner. You say I do not like retail business people but I support Mr. McDonald. You say I do not like office workers, but I used to support both Mrs. English (also a teacher too) and Revered Jennings both I believe used to work in an office. Mr. Warren, Mr. McDonald, Mr. Matthews and Mr. Margolius are all small business owners by my definition and I like all of them. Several manufacturing men (Steinbacher and Woodard I believe fall in this category) are running for BOE and I like both of them. Not sure where you are getting that I do not like these groups. What I do not like is people settling for average. Average will get us no where. Average will keep us where we are now, which is not a good place.

Also, although you want to be the spokesman for the average Joe, I do not know too many average Joes who feel themselves important enough to take out a half page add to discuss their comments on our local elections. A drive by your residence shows all the candidates you are supporting, so maybe you would like to make a more clear endorsement, as I really do not see any average people in these races. I think Mr. Margolius, Mr. Matthews, and Mr. Fry; all men I know well, could very well could be insulted by the insinuation that they are only average.

Scott Margolius is not a business owner! He is a glorified janitor in his daddy in laws business, ran by his wife. He loves to take credit for which he has had NOTHING to do with. Remember he did not even give the community a chance to look at a proposal. He decided without all the facts to give growth and prosperity the boot.

All of us saw one group of visible people in the society of this town call
all the shots for years and years. Let me tell you; they were shocked when
that all came to a crashing end in the last commission election.

We are seeing there dirty tricks as they demand to have back their
"rightful place" calling the shots and knowing in advance what will happen
even before an issue comes to a public vote.

Our town finally got in a commission that will not do their bidding. You
know there are some tough times ahead, but the “old money” will never
suffer. The real problem is; they don’t care if you do.

So follow the money of the candidates, how much is bank money and how much
is self funded? Just look at the signs for a start.

Please get out and vote so the “ Chosen Ones” and their minions can’t run
this town in to the ground ever again. Vote for openness, honesty, and a
fair shake for even the little guy.

Don’t ever think your vote does't’t count, in the eyes of God and in the
voter’s booth we all account for the same amount!

Wow! That post will get deleted for sure! That kind of transparency will not be tolerated on this board. Wait, what?

Anonymous said...

"Our town finally got in a commission that will not do their bidding."

You hit the nail on the head that time. Kuhn and Smith and Margolius will not do the town's bidding. Instead, they do the bidding of their buddies in the local hardware and electric stores. Not to mention their buddy contractors who want to work on the hospital.

Hope all you poor folks get your bicylcles ready for your ride to the voting places for Tuesday. Guess you won't have to ask off of work. Hope you can stay off of meth long enough to get your vote taken.

Your probably right look at who owns all the property North of town. They no doubt have a new vision for AC.
BTW: Who is B & E investments?

Hey Tea Party, this ones for you ---

Oh my God, smell them tires,
Someone save the baby, it's a trailer park fire!

How did the whole thing get out of hand?
I was burnin' spiders with an aerosol can...

Gotta get in there, kick down the door,
Daddy left his Harley on the livin' room floor...

Fire's out of hand, man, there she goes,
Only hope now's if the waterbed blows...

You save grandma, I'll save the crank,
We'll meet out back by the propane tank...

Oh, my, my, smell them tires
Someone save the baby, its a trailer park fire!

Drew,

I am not sure who is writing all the anonymous comments. They are not coming from me. I have been busy since my last post and have not been able to get online.

This seems to be getting out of hand. The whole reason for my letter in the Traveler was to try to wake up the citizens of Ark City.

During the 5 years I have lived here, I have noticed an apathy among the regular citizens, the blue and white collar who work hard for their money and try to do the right thing in raising their families. Many people I have talked to have been afraid to get involved. Afraid that disagreeing with the 'power groups' that have historically controlled our city will bring about retaliation on them and their families.

I believe our city commission needs to represent our community (more of a populist representation) instead of our commissioners representing local special interest groups (for example:the banks or AC Industries). BTW, I am not against either and believe they are important in the growth of our city, but do not believe special interest groups should be allowed a free reign or to be allowed to strong arm our city and its residents into doing what is best for the special interest group but not neccessarily what is best for our city.

I think we need to be able to work together. Our differences are not detrimental, but by bringing different ideas to the table, we have a much better opportunity to become a better community. One that our children will be proud of to call home. One in which they will want to stay and raise their families. That is best way to create growth in our community.

I have not actually checked, but I bet that if someone were to look up the median age of our citizens, it has been slowing increasing as our young grow up and instead of staying, move away.

Don't want to appear to be on a soap box. Pent up frustration over the years sometimes boil over. Since moving here, we have grown to love this city.

I hope this helps explain a little better.

Frank

Has anyone noticed Gordon's Fry signs at Kuhn's business on east Kansas, and his home at 5th and Kansas? It also appears that most of Fry's signs are in front of abandoned looking, run down rental homes owned by Dotty Smith. Who is Fry's biggest backer? Go look for yourself!

Anonymous said...

There is also a Gordon Fry sign in Curtis Eaton's yard. I know who NOT to vote for now if I ever want business brought here.

anonymous 4/5 @ 6:08,

And your point is???

Drew,

As this election has progressed, it has become more clear to me that it is a microcosm of what is happening at the state, national, and international levels. There are small groups of people or in some instances large corporations (either of which is what I mean by special interest groups) who feel that they know best for the citizens of the community whether that community be Ark City, the state of Kansas, the United States of America or even the global community itself.

When our founding fathers began this experiment of a republic, a country ruled by the people, not a monarch or other type of dictatorial ruler, the rest of the world paid close attention to see if a country ruled by the common man, meaning non-aristocratic, would be able to survive. for most of the past 150 years, we not only proved we could survive, but overcame our internal strife of a civil war in the 1860's to actually thrive to the point of coming to the aid of the industrial nations of Europe not once but twice in World Wars I and II, and emerging as a global leader.

Thoughout our history, there have been periods of time when special interest groups have threatened to destroy our Republic, but each time it has been countered by a grass roots movement by the people beginning at a local level to prevent it. The citizens of our city have a history and a heritage of being that type of people who would stand up and fight for our rights and freedoms at all levels, whether it be local, national or global.

Somewhere along the way we have become complacent. We have allowed government to become our parents. We have slowly, over time, given up our individual rights and freedoms. The very rights and freedoms which our forefathers for generations have fought for. This is why I feel an urgency to wake up our community. We need to start somewhere before our Republic is no more.

You had mentioned about the signs on my front lawn. I may not always agree with Scott's decisions, but I have watched over the past 2 years since I stood up for my son against the banning of chickens in Ark City and observed the way in which he comes to his decisions. He comes about them with thought and research, not just haphazardly voting with the crowd. I met Bob last winter/spring while helping to clear the brush around Memorial Lake to make it safer for our children during the local fishing derby. I believe he cares for our community and will hold the others accountable. While my wife was running for office, on several occasions we have had the opportunity to speak with Gordon and believe he has the experience to help lead and make the tough decisions that will be needed over the next couple of years as we head into one of the worst economic periods of our nation's history. These are the reasons my wife took a back seat in the elections and we decided to support Scott, Bob and Gordon. Others may have their own reasons for voting the way they do, but these are mine.
