Freedom of speech redux

My point in posting that story about miss America was not to get into the gay debate.
The point was, - to me anyways - was her voicing her opinion costing her the title.
SHould someone's opinion keep them from winning something like miss america?
I just think that sort of thing has a chilling effect on freedom of speech.
Just look at how fear makes people post anonymously on here, and there's no title on the line even.
I do think it is a freedom of speech issue.
The gay issue is a side issue to me in this case.

They have had the interview part of the event for a long time. If you say something stupid, you don't get to win. Its nothing new.

She choose to do the pageant knowing that there was a chance that she would enter the question portion. She should of been ready to answer any question that was asked. She wasn't the only one asked a hot button question, Others including the winner was asked tough questions. I think she should of stayed in the middle ground with the answer and she didn't! She brought up her religon and excluded the gay community and those who support gay rights. She also excluded those who believe in other religions. I think when your running for Miss USA, You might want to not exclude portions of the USA.

Also- As she stated today, She would not change a thing. She is sticking behind what she said... So if she has no regrets then why are we still discussing this?

Two good points above. I do not understand why it is much of anyones business what other people do. I find homosexualty to be wrong. So I do not engage in it. But does that give me the right to judge others? As long as they do not hurt anyone else along the way, let them do whatever they want. It is none of my business. Or yours!

So if they adopt or have an alternate method of having children, do the children get a choice in what is normal?
What if I went so far as to say that children who are victims of divorce are more likely to divorce?
It is a choice and from the moment we take our first breathe we are influenced, guided, or directed by society and our guardians. For many Society seems to have replaced their gaurdians.

It wasn't stupid...biased gay supporters say it is stupid- that does not make it stupid. Stupid is judging her beliefs because they are different from yours...the same shit you gay supporters whine about your rights...what about hers???

Anonymous said...

They asked her what her OPINION was. Stupid is not getting that. If gay boy wanted his answer he should have competed to get there and been on stage answering it himself. He has no right to judge her and he is making a real ass of himself having such diareaha of the mouth (ha ha- pun intended-watch where you put that thing!)
Anyway- he is doing exactly the opposite of what he expects for himself and his gay followers. Hypocrite!!

JJ, I am honestly starting to believe that this blog hurts more than helps..... Why do you insist on the type of posts that you know are just going to incite not unite.

Please for the love of all things right, lay off the religious, flame baiting, and completely irrelevant to Ark City topics.

I am attaching a link to a really wonderful blog that my friend does that really tries to talk up his neighborhood and town..... you could really get some good ideas from it that I think would be more uniting....

JJ- You usually try are a loving Christian man. Why on this topic do you bring hate and intollerance?

I think freedom of speech has been dwindling for awhile.

I read an article awhile back about a young girl who had been given a cross necklace by her mother. She wore it to school and was suspended

There has been several students in the last few years who spoke negatively about their teachers on facebook and were suspended

But then you look at people like Fred Phelps, Howard Stern and other shock jocks and wonder how they keep from getting into trouble with the things they say.

The only way to make this more ironic is to accuse you of being judgmental.

The accusation that you are a bad person because you bring hate and intolerance.

LOL!!!!!

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Rom 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Rom 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them.

Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Rom 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Rom 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Rom 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Rom 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Rom 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

JJ,

These are interesting times. I read recently where there is a great concern over Isreal attacking Iran.
The Priminister of Isreal is to come to the US. It was said the President will not be available to meet with him.
There is a concern that Iran is within 60 days of having enough uranium to build a Nuclear Bomb.
There is also a concern that Isreal if they feel there is no longer support from the US. Will take things in there own hands.
On the other hand Iran it seems believes they must create a world event that is capable of bringing back their Messiah!
What say you?

JJ asked --Tell me how i have shown hate or intolerance.

JJ stated earlier--
So what will you say when people want to marry their brother or sister.
or a person wants to marry an animal
or a child
or their child
what basis do you have for drawing any line.

what if someone wanted to marry their car for tax purposes ?

So comparing homosexuality to beastiality, pedophilia, and object loving does not seem like hate of homosexuality to you JJ?

You also stated earlier something about why should we change marriage for 3% of the population when 97% think it is OK, That is an exact example of intollerance of a minority group. Shouldn't all people have the same rights?

Traveler Editor said...

>>
Thats tyranny of the minority
forcing change on the majority for the sake of a minority.
No one cares what people do.. gay people have the same rights everyone else has.
Marriage is not a "right"
it is an institution
if you change the institution, you are taking away the rights of the majority.
Marriage is the problem
Gay-ness is not the problem.

Thanks for adding to my point JJ.

What you're saying is, if anyone so much as hints that they might not agree with everything the Gay lobby says, they are hate filled bigot?
That is what bothers me about the gay movement.
You are not allowed to disagree with them without being called a racist.
That is what you do when you dont have anything to back up your argument, you cry racist bigot.
Doesnt help them, or any real minorities.

No one should be kept out of any institution, if you do that it is descrimination pure and simple.

Everyone deserves equality. I would have thought we all figured that out long ago, but I guess not.

How does allowing gay folks to marry take away from something?

Anonymous said...

What is with you all at the traveler lately? Is there some sort of mandate to stir up controversy? First with the local elections, the a bunch of name calling on your blogs, now a gay marriage debate and a debate on how Obama is doing. Are you trying to create controversy?

If you don't like being labeled a bigot then don't be a bigot - it is pretty simple.

@ JJ

Good grief - How is allowing same sex marriage giving the gay community absolute power over anyone? Marriage is a legal status whose definition has been modified throughout history.

Your argument is flawed and in my opinion a justification for your religious beliefs. You can't have it both ways - you either support gay rights or you don't.

Not really, it is your job to report the news and events of the town. Just the facts please! The courier does a better job of it.

"No one should be kept out of any institution, if you do that it is descrimination pure and simple."

So, what you're saying is that I, being a straight white man, should be able to:

A) Run for Ms. Universe

B) Join the NAACP

C) Get a scholarship from the UNCF

D) Join and Sorority

E) Use the Women's restroom, locker room, etc

F) Host a show on BETV

G) Join a gay and lesbian club

Right?

Bob E. Dylan said...

B) Join the NAACP

I think anyone can join. I dont think they limit it to people of colour?
but the point is valid
why should there be separate men and women's restrooms?
inst that discriminatory?

Often it is not really a persons fault in a way for being intollerant. It may come from how they were raised. It may come from their religion (probably like JJ). But for whatever reason it is we need to work to rid ourselves of hateful acts and words for the good of the future of our society.

JJ and others like you, I understand you because I was once like you, homophobic, as my family is. But once you meet some real good people who are gay, lesbian, etc. you will learn that they too are members of our society and worthy of love and acceptance.

>>>

The thing is
I have not said anything against Gay people. I have even said I dont care what people do.
I only questioned whether a man should attack a young woman for stating her opinion.
that makes me a hater.....
Its just amazing to me that you cannot even question the politics of some people ..
Amazing that you cant see how intolerant you are being while calling me intolerant.

I know gay people.
The gay people i know are reasonable good people.
we can actually have civilized debates.
they dont have a problem with me at all not agreeing with gay marriage.
I have said a few time already that i have no problem with civil unions, which is different, but would give them what they want under the law.

but somehow that makes me a bigot.
ok whatever.

Do you group homosexuals with incest offenders, beastiality lovers, and pedophiles????

Really JJ? Please ask one of your many homosexual friends what they think of that statement.

And what do you think should have been done differently at that pageant?

Do you know for a fact the young lady from California would have won if it was not for that answer?

You cannot really undo it now.

The death of free speech. Free speech is not dead, but, it certainly is on the chopping block. The homosexual lobby is the most intolerant group around. This lady said, "in my opinion." Mr. Hilton had a cardiac. Talk about intolerant...he called her every name in the book, "c" "b", etc. stuff you can't even say here. WAS MR. HILTON TOLERANT? I WANT TO KNOW. His way or the highway. Say what I want to hear or it's "off with your head". No, free speech isn't dead, but, be warned, if you think you can freely say what you want...

The Christians and Jews are the percieved enemy. What about the Muslims? Try being openly homosexual in Iran or Saudia Arabia. Christians are not the enemy. The homosexuals are their own worst enemy. The things they do to each other. The pain, the abuse, the misuse of each other. I have no axe to grind with homosexuals. Those who will talk to me like me. I really don't care what they do. I think it's unhealthy. Definitely not what what a human body was meant to do. It's just not natural. But, that's their choice. Choice, not mandatory behavior. Definitely not a lifestyle a society at large can embrace and survive. We started downhill the day free speech was put on the chopping block. We saw it point blank on the stage recently...

And, by the way, notice I haven't used any disrespectful language here, but watch how many people just can't STAND to hear it. Ok, have at me.

Traveler Editor said...

Do you know for a fact the young lady from California would have won if it was not for that answer?

Well the judge said the reason she did not win was what she said.
How much clearer can that be?

Anonymous said...

"Do you know for a fact the young lady from California would have won if it was not for that answer?"

Well, considering that "Perez Hilton" skipped around to every media outlet that would listen to him, and called her all kinds of names and said that the question cost her the title, then i'd say yes, it did.

Now, I would ask those of you standing up for him, which do you find to be more intolerant, a person giving their honest opinion, or the person who didn't like that opinion, so they go on a rampage of calling filthy names, and cost someone their crown?

People (using the term loosely) like "Perez" give homos a bad name.

Anonymous said...

I smell a lawsuit in the works.

Anonymous said...

I agree- anyone who listens to that fool perez (doesn't deserve a capital "P") as an intellegent source of anything is showing their menatality.

Anonymous said...

Perez said that he would've yanked the crown off her head, had she one. I heard him say it in an interview. He should not have been allowed to behave that way. Giving him any consideration or credit as a celebrity or even someone with a valued opinion is a joke. What is this guys 'claim to fame' anyway? He copied Paris Hilton's name, is gay and makes horrible jabs at people under the guise of wanting equality? WHAT? He ruined this girls image and no one is saying anything about that. That doesn't make any sense. He is a complete and total hypocrite and should be strung up by his high heels.

Anonymous said...

I think a more appropriate answer to the gay marriage question would have been--

“I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because some places out there in our nation don’t have homosexuals and I believe that our homosexuals like such as in a South Africa and Iraq everywhere like such as and I believe that they should our gays over here in the US should help the US or should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for our lesbians.”

Then she would have won for sure!

Below is the definition of hate speech from Wikipedia.

In my opinion, Gay marriage is something you should speak about at home or other private gatherings. It is not something that should publicly be talked about at an event such as a pageant. I don't think either Ms. California or Mr. Hilton did anything illegal or anything to really worry too much about.

Hate speech is a term for speech intended to degrade a person or group of people based on their race, gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, language ability, ideology, social class, occupation, appearance (height, weight, hair color, etc.), mental capacity, and any other distinction that might be considered by some as a liability.
