The negativity and attacks on here have been amazing over the last week.
Some people really have a lot of anger.
A person did make a suggestion that I thought was good.
So
Here is a challenge.
For the rest of the week, until Sunday.
Lets talk about good things people have done.
Talk about people all you want, but talk about the good stuff.
Im sure there are good people out there that you can think of.
Lets see what happens

Jay Warren, Jean Snell, and Patrick McDonald are good guys.
US Navy Seals are awesome! They kicked some pirate hiney. I know it's not local, but love 'em anyway.
Jay, Jean and Patrick are going to be great commissioners.
No matter what Dustin thinks.
lol
Does that mean not to talk about the person , but does it leave their actions or lack there of to be addressed?
Because for the most of all of these blogs 8-% or better has always been about what hardship someone has caused to others (avg. citizen)!!
Callus
This is going to be boaring, I was always taught if you can not say anything positive about someone you should not say anything about them at ALL!!!
What is a good guy is that someone whom a person thinks will have his back in the worst of times or is it the good guy who smiles in your face and then stabs you in the back, like we believe our governing body has done!!
Keep in mind before deleting this I have not mentioned one name so I should be GOOD!!!!!!
I appreciate the laugh that the 6:41/6:49 poster gave us with his syntax and spelling.
"for the most of all of these blogs,"What is a good guy is that someone whom a person thinks will have his back"...
Thanks for the laugh, you made my day! I don't think you have to worry about your post getting deleted, it's hilarious!
It will be great stepping back in time having ACI hand picking the commission again
In the immortal words of Dave Schaller; “don’t forget who got you there”!
I think that the child ID system can really be a great idea, lets all have our children fingerprinted and video taped and have the promise that the data will not be recorded.
That way our Government will not have a need to collect Identity data on our children in the future, hmmm wait a minute, my government counterpart just told me that no data can be collected on a computer and really be deleted
I am trying to be positive here but this sticks of big brother not to mention any names SW
How much money has been raised to pay off the water bills? I have bought cookies at several locations but haven't heard how it's going.
We have wonderful teachers in the schools that care about our kids. Let's hope that the budget cuts don't stop the great strides that we have made.
After a recent stay in the hospital, I am also impressed with the compassion and caring shown by our doctors and nurses.
Life extends beyond the city commission and we have much to be thankful for.
Tough isn't it? To say something good. Just kind of goes against the grain of fallen man...
Well I think when you quit focusing on the issues you end up focusing on the People!
When you get back to identifying the things that can or need to be addressed regardless of what a few people want or say they want. Set some standards and attainable goals that can be supported by even the opposing sides. Then you will take the power from the few and give it to the many.
The true leaders do not have to be in Public positions unless thats
where you want them to be!
You can accomplish more in the Private Sector than you can
ever get done through trying to reach concensus in the Public sector!
Why did we forget!
To say something good. Just kind of goes against the grain of fallen man...

IT really does DQ
Im amazed that no one has been able to.
come on folks
it aint that hard.

I read not to long ago on this blog about the recreation facilities and the complaint was about the shape of the ball fields. One poster stated that there was money appropriated for repairs but no volunteers!
Now I think that in the absence of volunteers it might be possible to use workers from the Prison in Winfield. I know I've heard people say they are stealing jobs.
But, if budgets can only support materials and not the cost of contract labor or additional payrolls! Isn't it better to find a way to get it done than to leave it in substandard condition?
There are solutions and that may not be the best one - but where there is a Will there is a Way!
I'm wondering why the limbs are still around. people told me that the city of Winfield contacted Cowley County to get help with the limbs and cleanup. They got it and now they are cleaned up.
I have been told that Arkansas City staff was told all they had to do was ask for help and they would get it. Guess they haven't asked.
Let me see if I can stir up some controversy...
I want to thanks those who ran for public office, and for the ones that won. At least they had the courage to run, and try to help out. Same goes for those who serve on various city boards. We need people who care, and want to see progress; not people on the sidelines critiquing every decision.
A big hand for all the (volunteer) coaches that server various teams in the city. Though you, many have the opportunity to serve as role models for the future of our town.
One poster commented on the Navy Seals; they are awesome. But someone had to fly them there, train them, get them from the landing area to the target zone, etc. All our servicemen and women are awesome. As a former Navy knuckle-dragger (Engineroom machinist), I am proud to have served my country.
I even think Zach Bryant is a descent guy. He might not have been a great business owner, you do have to give him credit for trying, and he has really tried to find a niche for his skateboard group, and get it organized.
mmm wait a minute, my government counterpart just told me that no data can be collected on a computer and really be deleted

Theres a good side and a bad side to this.
The technologically advanced we get, the more we can do, but its also easier to keep track of everyone and you lose all aspects of privacy.
The child ID thing would be great, if the kid gets lost or abducted, it would make finding them easier.
The downside is it makes their information available..
so do you want to make it easier to find your lost kid, or protect the kids right to privacy?
thats the choice
Its like having a cell phone or a GPS.
They are very convenient, but your every move is tracked.....
m wondering why the limbs are still around.
......
People can pick up their own limbs and haul them to the brush dump on F Street.
What if every person in town with a pickup had hauled in one load
We have a great police force that I appreciate, even if they aren't perfect, because let me tell you that my husband works out of town and they had a major feloney situation at his work. Well they called the police. The police came and took a report and then one of them told the manager that he would take care of it after his vacation. I was like WHAT?????
They picked up our limbs already. Takes a little time.
I believe that most the people of Ark City are good. As another poster has already said we get off the problem and onto the people involved at times but all in all I see a community that as you walk down the street you get a smile and a hello. Can't go everywhere and get that.
"People can pick up their own limbs and haul them to the brush dump on F Street.
What if every person in town with a pickup had hauled in one load"
Sounds good. I don't have a pickup. Or what if we organized the Block Party groups into limb pickup groups? It could happen. One or two pickups on each block probably, and those who don't have pickups could pitch in on gas and add some elbow grease, (poof), limb problem solved.
D.Q.
"The police came and took a report and then one of them told the manager that he would take care of it after his vacation. I was like WHAT?????"
And you think that doesn't happen here? It does. It happened just a few weeks ago. They never followed up.

You've got one, how many limbs did you pick up? You always have an answer for everything don't you? But I bet you didn't go to one house and ask if they needed help... Did ya JJ. I think people in this town have waited long enough for their limbs to be picked up. It's almost been a month.
First time blogger! Love all the positive response of the bloggers, not. It must make one feel superior or better about themselves when hammering on somebody. My dad taught me to go face to face, if you had a problem with someone and try to get it worked out. Not to gossip about them, or to be mean, or to slander until you crush that persons spirit. I too, have my downfalls, but not to be miserable and whining all the time about others. After a while I'd have to be cleansed of all that misery. Many of you don't even know personally, the person you are hammering. Gossip is the ruin of people. Uh, you can use my quote. Anyway, why not seek to inspire those to do better instead of belittling or to down right be mean to them.. Bloggers that do nothing, but constantly rag on people need to take a course or start going to bible believing church. Oh how great it would be to like the Andy Griffin show in the little town of Mayberry.
I grew up in a small town of 600. Everyone waved at you and you waved back, we looked after each others property and well being. If there was a problem we would get it solved by talking it out or agree to disagree and that would be it. Now, the coffee drinkers in the local dinner still had their liars table.
Hey, "Wheres the Love".
If you don't like me and I don't like you, that's Ok, but without all the back biting, and still have respect for each other. I have a whole lot to say, but I will do it in smaller notes.
It will be interesting to see how many of you target me, sense I have seen it done so many times to others who try to be positive. No, I don't have a soap box, but would like to encourage others. It is good to happy! Try it, you might like it.
A little jab, Be a real man or woman and post you name as I
did or do you not have the respect for yourself of how you are acting. Are you ashamed? Can one control ones self? It is a choice on how you act.

I will be ok with that if you bring those very same prisoners in to do your job when budgets get slim.
lets SEE HOW MUCH YOUR EDUCATION AND TRAINING IS WORTH WHEN YOU BRING SOMEONE IN TO DO your job FOR FREE
Trust me it is not the workers who cant get the job done, its the bureaucrats and red tape and Managers who do not know how to manage that is causing the problem
The tree limb dilemma is another example of BIG government. The people of this town have fallen victim. They are now sitting back waiting on the government to take care of them.
The flip side of this argument is that we pay a HUGE amount of money for water/trash/sewage in this town. I'm sure people justify sitting on their fannies because of this.
Perhaps this fee is not supposed to cover limb pick-up, but I'm sure some are justifying it as such. Any way you look at it, the limb pick up is costing everyone in this town money. We are paying for the vehicles, fuel and wages through our tax dollars. I guess that's what you get when government tries to "nanny" us. People who are no longer capable of taking care of themselves. Neighbors no longer knocking on doors and lending a helping hand.
Hmmmm....
Obama liberals are the best. We could never survive without them telling us how to. :)
Here is something positive...
The concept of envy over those who prosper is, in my opinion, right in line with the liberal left's way of thinking. Many in Washington want to take away from the "wealthy" in order to fund their projects for those without means. Many on this blog speak out against those who are successful with their conspiracy theories.
However, polling trends and results show that the majority in this town vote conservative. They vote for prosperity and they lean to the "right". This leads me to believe that the "whiners" are the minority and most are not jealous of the successful leaders in our town.
One less meth lab in my neighborhood today. Yeah! Three kids who will no longer be living in one. :) Thanks, ACPD!
Who had the lab?

I'd buy into some of the fact there are those who are looking for someone else to take care of them. However I also see those who see the Public coffers as an easy prey to make money!
But,I think the thing that bothers
more than that is the fact that we are collectively robbing from future generations!
Not only will we be leaving a national deficit, we are leaving a failing infrastructure across this nation!
I don't like paying taxes any more than the next guy. I mailed my check yesterday! Each year I'm glad that I have the money to pay!
If I pay more in taxes will it change the way the money is spent?
will be ok with that if you bring those very same prisoners in to do your job when budgets get slim.
Well the plan as it was presented was to use volunteers! It was posted that nobody bellied up to the bar! I think even that plan was previously mentioned by Patrick several months back.
-----------------------
Managers who do not know how to manage that is causing the problem
So,do you think the answer lies in leaving things substandard?
Or
Is it necessary to set examples and standards or goals then allow some creativity if needed and get the job done!
If you put a dollar sign on everything in sight - there will never ever be enough money!
!you may look at it that way but!
the very talented individuals that work for the City are just like any other American that supports their family
to many people in the city think the city workers are worthless rejects of society that cannot get a job anywhere else.
And that is how you make us feel when we are forced to be likened to thieves murders and rapist.
Thanks for placing such a high value on us, many of us work for 10 dollars an hour and less and try to support our families on this wage, then you cram thieves and murders down our throats.
Do you know that we are here for you 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year on call , many of you do not understand we are not compensated to be on call and sit at home and be come serve you at anytime night or day, but it is demanded of us to keep our jobs]
you do not understand that we are professionals in what we do and we enjoy serving you because public service has its great merits.
yet you are prepared to tell us we are replaceable by thieves robbers and rapist, i guess if this is how you view us so be it.
I will not put a dollar sign on why i come to work, if you will allow prisoners to come work at your job; and cut your staff in half and replace them with thieves murders and the like.
then try to figure out why morale is the lowest it has ever been in the history of your business
maybe cut your wages too and tell you your education means nothing because now i am getting the job done for free

I wonder if the owner of the house will have it cleaned, walls redone, carpet removed before renting or selling to some one else.
The residue can be very harmful even days or years later, WHAT WILL THEY DO!!, or will they even tell the next person about meth being made there.
I for one would like for the city to make an ordinance requiring the owner or landlord to post that fact about all those houses that have had meth used in them.. Or have them tourn down.
What you all think?

Well the plan as it was presented was to use volunteers! It was posted that nobody bellied up to the bar! I think even that plan was previously mentioned by Patrick several months back.
Well lets just take a quick look at what they have done to the volunteer pool in AC, (1) turned off people water for balances under $10 dollars and until enough people complained reversed it but still has not returned over charges, created a crash tax that caused undue stress on the citizens of AC, bringing kids to court for getting off there A$$ and getting out and exercising and then said they want to fijne the parents, ummmm wonder why some people don't want to help UHH !!!!

Well I have definatley identified an issue!
First, their not free at one time it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000/yr. to keep each prisoner in Prison.
Second, I don't agree with them taking jobs that are included in a budget. But, I can see where they could be used constructively to supplement the City crews and/or do things that can be done due to budget labor limitations or the cost of Cotract labor.
So go ahead and take it personal and don't try to look for solutions!
What would you suggest?
Callus,
I believe it is a state requirement that a house that has been a meth lab has to go through a decontamination procedure. It can not be rented, sold, or even repaired without permission from the state. The state can tie up the property for years in the process. The county and state have no say in the matter.
Prisoners are taking jobs and if you cannot see this your not looking. please look behind any trash truck, or parks department mower, or for that matter any street department job. Data is used to show cost savings of $10 dollars per hour per man, but that money was never spent so it cant be saved.its politics,.the big picture is not what your saving but what your getting for what your spending
I do not feel that the tax dollars spent housing these criminals should attempt to be recovered by taking a job from a citizen who is prepared to work and not live off your welfare tax dollar.
I do have the answers
AS I do not see things from the top looking down , but rather from the bottom looking up, I call this " New Concept Government"
Most of the time the water is so murky with politics at the top looking down you cannot see what is happening in the current.
I have great compassion for those that continue to try, however until the fish in the current have a voice that is listened to it will be politics as usual.
And i am not referring to a voice that gripes and complains but one that points out where wasted efforts and dollars are tossed at the wind
Nancy Pelowski ?????????
HAHAHAHA!
You are positively wonderful at spelling.
sorry I am on a black berry and the keys are very hard to hit driving down the road,

I don't know who does what but ther has been some house occupied after a meth bust here and other places. A 20/20 show at the end of last year show that those rules very from stste to state and in some cases children and whole families had been hospitalized because of the resudue left behind. House' where put on the markets and sold and anything previous to that house being sold wasa not disclosed.
it just seems to me that would be one good ordinance to have to help protect people in this community and I would think it would be far more important than how many chickens you could have in your yard or how long your dog has been tetherd in a day or wheather you have wood or glass on a broken window. Thats all I am trying to say.
Watch the house on forth street and see how long it is unoccupied if they were indeedd making meth and not just using, but to know that we will have to have communication from the SW to let everyone know about the house, they are quick to out a name in the paper but the rest of the case closed or not will never be told to the community, And yes that is part of what I think the traverler should be doing in sistuations like this.
callus

I believe some thought they had all the lead paint and asbetous out of the shchools and other places but when the twin towers went down they found a plenty of both once the rafterd started shaking and the same with a meth house question is it ever all gone ??
Can't they use the Home 40 rule for something like that??
Callus
This particular home was not a rental. However, I understand they were about to lose it to the bank.
I think your idea is a good one, Callus. I think they should be cleaned thoroughly. Some may think it's unfair to punish the landlord for their tenant's crimes, but many landlords know what's going on and just keep their backs turned. I just spoke with one two days ago. I do not get it, either. They have a hard time collecting their rent and the house gets destroyed in the process. Are they just using it as a tax ride off or what?
Ahhh...positive thoughts abound but we don't want to stay with them. Is that the nature of our society or is it that we can no longer see good in things. Either way we have to keep trying and I believe that if we see good in things then things will become good. No I am not "smoking" anything just have to find something to believe in.
Their used to be a website that posted the addresses of homes where meth labs were found. I don't know if it is still around.
I do not feel that the tax dollars spent housing these criminals should attempt to be recovered by taking a job from a citizen who is prepared to work and not live off your welfare tax dollar.
---------------------
The reason that public jobs have become so important is the lack of available quality jobs and the
competiton for available labor.
It has been said over and over there are more jobs than people to fill them - but when you look at those jobs - they are temporary or without benefits or any lenght or duration.
Thats not meant to take anything away from those who work those jobs or have chosen those jobs or professions.
But, the bottom line is that they have risen in importance due to wages and benefits and lenght of duration of the jobs.
Many who get into those positions simply wish to ride them through
retirment.
The purpose of Government is to
support the Private Sector not to replace it!

I'm guessing you are a city worker. Go back and read your post and then look amongst your co workers to see who is who and where they been.
About six months ago I was looking at installing a new wood floor in my house. I went to Lowe's in Ponca to price materials and casually asked about installation cost. The Lowe's employee told me that they could no longer do installations because of some ordinance that passed in Ark City.
Does anyone know what he was talking about?
Yes, the city now requires contrators to be licensed in our city, which requires a test of some sort and a fee.
They did it to cut Lowe's out of the competition IMO.

>>
In the first year they could have gotten the license without a test.
The fee is pretty small
It is aimed at trying to keep ripoff artists out.
Lowes could well afford a few licenses.
BUT
I thought this had been worked out.
Lowes was going to come fix our fence untill we found a local guy who could do better work.
It is not worked out. Lowe's would not touch my hot water tank. Ark City keeps saying that they are following federal standards, but according to Lowe's in Ponca we are asking too much.
Off topic, but a chance to help a local couple.
Here is a homemade commercial on youtube made by a couple from Winfield, Shelby and Polly Miller, about the difference between banks and credit unions. It is part of a contest, and they will win a prize if the video is viewed the most. Let's spread it around and help them out.
http://www.youtube.com:80/watch?v=oPgD2J69B2s
Wow! Lowe’s would have to play on the same playing field as every one else. That’s not fair, we are asking too much.
@ 11:13
Thank you for the information! I wanted to double check before I started getting quotes for another project and didn't know if I should waste my time with Ponca businesses.
Wow, the Lowe's haters really have a rise in blood pressure every time they hear the word.
LOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWESLOWES
I really love Lowe's. They are so much cheaper and have such a large selections of things that I really can't live without. I bet I spend 10k a year at Lowe's in Ponca.
Watch out, don't give em a heart attack.
Dear Ark City Hatter I mean Lowe’s lover
There are many things you can’t live without, but none of them come from Lowe’s
One thing we should keep in mind is that the people doing installations for Lowe's are contractors. They are not directly Lowe's employees. It is the contractor's who do not want to deal with our city rules for one reason or another. I'm not trying to argue the case for Lowe's good or bad. I'm just concerned that the process one must go through to work in this town could discourage local people from trying to earn a paycheck doing that kind of work. Also, if this limits the number of contractors available for hire, I'm sure that will raise the prices of the services provided. Supply and demand? Maybe that was not the city's intentions with the rules, but it may be the result.
If Lowe's uses contractors, why don't some of the contractors in Ark City get the work? I'm sure Lowe's would contract a plumber like Kuhn to install that hot water heater. I wonder what the real problem is?

April 17, 2009 11:13 AM"
I think it had other intended effects too. Some locals refer to it as the anti-Mexican ordinance. There were a number of Hispanic newcomers to Arkansas City who were willing to do carpentry, concrete or handiman jobs for less money. They were aggressively taking work away from our "less than motivated" local contractors who are pretty slow to get out to a job site.
So some folks thought it was intended to stop people from using that resource to get work done quickly and reasonably.
"Dear Ark City Hatter..."
ROFLMAO. hahahahahahahaha
Where is the Ark City hatter located. I could use a new hat.
Not to change the subject but, does any one find it odd for law enforcement agincies to say that if you have a lot of motin detectors and survalance camera's around your house it is a sign of something illegal going opn inside.
I would guess that with all the cameras around most business in town means they are doing something illegal to there customers LIKE OVERCHARGING for goods sold (LMAO LOL) Sorry could not let that go by!..
Ark City Cops use scare tactics to do just about everything they do.
after all they are trained to be that way
There is a link in the Ark City paper for crime prevention and the part that makes me say ummmm is Home Security 101 posted by S.W., is that just ironic or just a joke? What is SW drying to do confuse us or what? You be the judge!!!!
I was on my way to work at approx 7AM and I came upon an SUV with what looked like eight snipers standing on the running board of the SUV with their weapons slung over their shoulder, ready to go.

yep know what you mean, but if intel was good they sould have known and not had to use such a show of froce. Oh yea that already happened here about two years but they think they cured the kid outlook at police officers..
But then there are really sick people out there like in Las Vegus and along the Texas and Arizona and Chicago, or even florida, uh oh my fault we in AC,Ks. (LOL)

Cooking meth is stupid and hazardous and ruins families and is illegal.
The "contamination" of meth "byproducts" is ammonia, a nasty and somewhat hazardous chemical used in window cleaners and by blueprint labs in much higher aerosol quantities than would be as a residue in a meth house.
Farmers work around it and inject it into fields where edible produce is grown.
They used to contract Haz Mat contractors to come in from Tulsa to Ark City and put on bunny suits and collect cardboard box "meth labs" from the side of the county roads.
Someone discovered that the ammonia residue was higher in the farmer's fields than in the box.
No need for drama.
Just common sense.

Tell that to someone who gets sick from the residue that may be ingested or starts to have any side affects that a druggie has!!!

"These schnozberries taste like schnozberries!"
Show me one case of someone becoming sick from living in a house that was once a meth lab. I agree it is BS. I kicked in many a meth lab door with no protective gear whatsoever (not counting my glock). That was back before they started scaring people with mumbo jumbo.
Nelson has been busted many many many times by ACPD why the big show
They turned Kenny Tyler’s snitching of Marshal Ice in to a big show
Must be for fame and fortune
I love the thin blue line
Me too but this is about grandstanding
The only way to know if a rental house has meth residue is to have it tested. If a renter was making meth, it will probably test high. If a renter was using meth it may not test high.
Meth will not only damage the rental property but can damage neighborhood property and can also make people in the neigborhood sick.
Most Landlords have a clause in regards to drugs in their lease agreement but this is something that renters and househunters need to be proactive about when looking for a rental or to buy a home because you are about to own a piece of history!
Maybe someone will start a "safe" neighborhood program in A.C. to help reduce the drug problems?

You are a genius!!

No it won’t, thats government hyp.

I feel dumber reading this.

We all know the only way to solve the drug problem is to give the cops more money
We all know the only way to solve the drug problem is to give the cops more money
>>>>>>
Sarcasm?
I know thats what cops say, but throwing more money at it over the last 100 years or so has not worked, so ... might it make one stop and think that more money is not the answer?
As far as coverage.
We did have a debate at the paper about how to play the recent drug bust. There are some who want to make every arrest top of the front page screaming headlines, while others dont even want to mention it until they are convicted.
There is thought that goes into where we put stuff.
Also a public figure - such as a radio station owner - makes it bigger news.
It’s not just the cops that think throwing money at a problem is the answer it’s the general spend our way to prosperity mentality. Lets just print more money (that’s to you morons {DAS} who think the tea party is a joke for any reason).
Yes lets attack the easy targets that’s always a good idea and the more grandiose we can make it the better for sales,
"Also a public figure - such as a radio station owner - makes it bigger news."
So where is the follow up? have they even been to court? I haven't seen any BREAKING NEWS headlines.
I hate it when you print something like that, and then have zero follow up.
"Meth will not only damage the rental property but can damage neighborhood property and can also make people in the neigborhood sick."
Even worse, smoking cigarettes. Have you ever tried to rent a house in Ark City? You go from house to house and they all stink like cigarette smoke and mildew. It makes you retch. There are no rental houses where you don't have to put up with the remnants of this nasty, filthy habit.
If you look at the cost of all of the bad effects of drug use and compare it to the cost of the use of cigarettes, cigarettes are worse by a factor of hundreds of times.
Cigarette smoking should be outlawed. Cigarette smokers should have to pay their own way when they die of cancer from this nasty habit.
Cigarettes are outlawed in all public places. It is at the descretion of the landlord or homeowner of what rules apply for tenants. If you don't like the aftermath smell of cigarettes or mildew, you have a choice of not renting that house or apartment.
Meth can affect the whole neighborhood and all these people can do is keep calling the police until action is taken. In alot of cases, homeowners can't just move.
Well your wonderful commissioner with the name dottie smith doesn't allow cigerette smoking in her homes and she also good about not giving back the deposit. Since you think you are so much better then smokers why don't you rent from her? You're 2 of a kind obviously.
Well, now that smokers have been singled out and vilified, it is now time for fat people. Then I guess we could do a study that shows older workers are more expensive on Workers Comp. We can also tend to look at minorities who do more physical labor, like Mexican migrant workers and show that minorities lead to more expensive injuries. Plus if they die quicker then there will be a lesser impact on the health care system. One problem, second hand smoke from a cigarette is for less damaging than wood smoke from fireplaces or field burning or exhaust fumes. It’s my damn choice to smoke, so smoke I will, stupid leftist.
Name calling on a positive blog. Just think how bad it would be on a negative blog. Love thy neighbor...nah...more fun to hate.
Okay, I have to jump into this argument.
"One problem, second hand smoke from a cigarette is for less damaging than wood smoke from fireplaces or field burning or exhaust fumes."
That is just ridiculous. Choose to kill yourself if you want to, but please don't subject your children or grandchildren to secondhand smoke because you think it is harmless. Please do some research and educate yourself on the dangers of second hand smoke.
Secondhand smoke is the third leading preventable cause of disability and early death (after active smoking and alcohol) in the United States. For every eight smokers who die from smoking, one innocent bystander dies from secondhand smoke.
Here is a link to get you started. Please, if you don't care about your own health, please care about those close to you. http://www1.umn.edu/perio/tobacco/secondhandsmoke.html
P.S. When I see an adult smoking in the car with children in it and all the windows up, I just want to drag them out and beat them.
Secondhand smoke contains over 4000 chemicals including more than 40 cancer causing agents and 200 known poisons.
Secondhand smoke has been classified by the EPA as a Class A carcinogen - a substance known to cause cancer in humans.
Secondhand smoke contains twice as much tar and nicotine per unit volume as does smoke inhaled from a cigarette. It contains 3X as much cancer-causing benzpyrene, 5X as much carbon monoxide, and 50X as much ammonia. Secondhand smoke from pipes and cigars is equally as harmful, if not more so (Mayo Clinic release, Aug 97).
To those No Smoking Jihadist
Smoking Aloud
In a report titled, "Cigarette Taxes to Fund Health Care Reform: An Economic Analysis," the Congressional Research Service (CRS) found that the EPA study made subjective judgments, failed to account for factors that could bias results, and relaxed scientific standards to achieve the desired pre-determined results.
What they did was to ignore any data that did not conform to their publicly stated conclusions, conclusions made even before the research was begun! Hardly scientific!
Excerpt from the Smoking Conspiracy
From the University of Minnesota, Division of Periodontology:
Secondhand smoke, also known as passive or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is a combination of:
Mainstream smoke: exhaled by smokers
Sidestream smoke: given off by the burning end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe
Between 70% and 90% of non-smokers in the American population, children and adults, are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke. It is estimated that only 15% of cigarette smoke gets inhaled by the smoker. The remaining 85% lingers in the air for everyone to breathe. If a person spends more than two hours in a room where someone is smoking, the nonsmoker inhales the equivalent of four cigarettes.

Over the past two decades, medical research has shown that non-smokers suffer many of the diseases of active smoking when they breathe secondhand smoke.
Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer and contributes to the development of heart disease. Never smoking women who live with a smoker have a 91% greater risk of heart disease. They also have twice the risk of dying from lung cancer.
Never-smoking spouses who are exposed to secondhand smoke have about 20% higher death rates for both lung cancer and heart disease.
Secondhand smoke increases heart rate and shortens time to exhaustion. Repeated exposure causes thickening of the walls of the carotid arteries (accelerates atherosclerosis) and damages the lining of these arteries.
When a pregnant woman is exposed to secondhand smoke, the nicotine she ingests is passed on to her unborn baby.
Women who smoke or are exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy:
have a higher rate of miscarriges and stillbirths
have an increased risk of low birthweight infants
have children born with decreased lung function
have children with greater risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to experience increased frequency of:
asthma, colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other lung diseases
middle ear infections
sinus infections
caries in deciduous teeth
Ventilation systems and designated smoking sections do not protect patrons from ETS.
Current estimates of how smoking increases the risk of various diseases are dramatically underestimated because the ill effects of secondhand smoke inhalation are not taken into account.

You can't really believe that smoking does not hurt you or your loved ones! Stop hurting those around you. If you choose to smoke when you are alone, then fine, but don't subject others to it.
For all those out there carrying on about cigerettes, you might want to take a good hard long look at the chemicals you use in your home, the beauty products you use and the yard chemicals you might use. Its really amazing how people carry on and gripe about whats in cigarettes but don't look at whats in their everyday products that is equally harmful to us. Interesting that someone brought up the wood smoke and field burning, we don't think about the chemicals that farmers are using in their crops. (by the way, wood smoke and field burning makes me cough faster then inhaling someones cigarette smoke and I have been having severe congestion since the city started burning all the limbs.) Does everyone wash their fruits and vegetables good to remove the chemicals before you eat them? Take a good long look at what you do before passing judgement on smokers.
Great. You suggest I wash my vegetables but don't have any suggestions on washing my air. Thanks
Well, just like I'm not gonna be able to force the city and farmers to stop burning. Soooo... your welcome.
My point is, chemicals are in everything and everywhere. Not to tell you that you don't have a right to clean air.
Smoking is a bad habit and there is nothing worse than little kids smelling like cigarettes, that is poor parenting. But don’t stand on your soapbox and preach to me, it’s like the seatbelt law, it is wise but it’s not for some one ells to dictate. Good or bad it’s my choice, and it’s the store/ restaurants decision not yours.
"Its really amazing how people carry on and gripe about whats in cigarettes but don't look at whats in their everyday products that is equally harmful to us."
Well, I generally do not to go to a restaurant and spray everyone with oven cleaner. That is exactly what smokers do though.
"But don’t stand on your soapbox and preach to me, it’s like the seatbelt law, it is wise but it’s not for some one ells to dictate. Good or bad it’s my choice."
No, it is not your choice whether to buckle up in the car. It is the law. Have you ever been to an accident scene and seen people all mangled up because they weren't buckled up? I have. What's worse is parents who let their kids stand up in the seat or jump around in the car with no seatbelts.
I want to start going to church again. I visited a few and got discouraged because I just didn't like some of the things that I heard or saw.
Example:
Politics
Beliefs that are extreme and I mean "extreme"
Boring sermons
Anyone have a good church that I could visit?
you can go to our church its called mount zion it's 3 miles west on 166 & 2 miles south it's small but great, thanks for asking

Welcome to the midwest my friend.
I go to the church of rational thought. The tithe is a lot less, and there are far fewer hypocrites.
There is no such thing as god.
Depends on your definition of extreme i guess.
Id suggest First American Baptist
Central and A
Very good music, friendly people - except for me of course :) _ -
and the sermons are encouraging and uplifting.
They do some nice dinners too.
as far as hypocrites ... if you found a perfect one, you couldn't go cause it wouldnt be perfect anymore.
:)
Also Vinelife Church
in the old pilgrim church
very small group, but really nice.
I guess what I consider extreme for me is a preacher trying to strong arm his political beliefs on his congregation. I personally don't think religion and politics mix and therefore should not be part of a sermon or even discussed in a church.
I was taught a song in my church as a child and it was something like Jesus loves the little children, all the little children in the world...on and on, but if you go to some churches they bash gays and aren't they gods children too? Just another example of what I think is extreme. And before all of you start bashing me, NO, I am not gay.
Then I was watching a documentary on the anti-christ and did you know that some religions believed that Ronald Wilson Reagan was the anti-christ? Why did they believe that? Because he had six letters each in his first, middle and last name. To me, that is extreme and kind of out there.
So, I just want to find a church that preaches God's word, not anyone elses.
I personally don't think religion and politics mix and therefore should not be part of a sermon or even discussed in a church.
*********************************
Churches are not supposed to push political preferences. From what I understand if they are doing that they can lose their tax free status and be made to pay federal tax. During the presidential race I saw a news piece on this very subject. If that is what is happening at a church you have been going to, you can make waves to put a stop to it. No church wants to pay tax on the money it recieves in tithings. I have never been to a church that does this but it doesn't suprise me that some church leaders try to manipulate their flocks. Tsk Tsk...
I agree with those concerns.
There are lots of crazy beliefs out there .. such as reagan being the antichrist.
If it is real bad it should be challenged.
THis is why people need to study for themselves..
There is a difference between believing homosexuality to be wrong, and gay bashing though ..
I was at a church once in another state that had the pledge to the u.s. flag, and sang patriotic songs on the 4th of july.
I was really offended by that and didn't go back.
I believe the greatest threat to christianty is republicanism .. and some people think that is extreme :)
Id like to invite you to come over to first baptist (american) sometime.
If you do, come find me :)
Every time the U.S. has elected a new President, I have either read or heard on the news he is the anti-christ.
JJ, why were you offended by the pledge of alliegence to the flag and patriotic songs on Independence day? That sounds unAmerican to me.
Because it was in church.
I just think its wrong to bring government or even patriotism into the church.
not many would agree with me .. ?
So, do you also find it offensive to bring church (prayer) into school or business, or baseball games, or city council meetings?
I do.
There is a huge difference between a Pastor or Minister trying to influence the vote on a presidential campaign and just showing love for country and patriotisim. I don't see that there is a problem with the Pledge of Alligiance being said or patriotic songs on the Forth of July at church, showing love of country and love of God at the same time are acceptable. Soldiers do it all the time.
