who you like

There's plenty of attacking going on.
I am wondering if there is any positive reason to vote for a candidate?
I want to suggest posting about why you like a particular candidate.
who do you like and why?

Warren will get my vote as the all around best candidate. If not him, it'd be Patrick.

I liked Penny, sorry to see her leave the race.

I'm voting for Scott because he asks questions and doesn't just go all with everything.

Having read the first three interviews, have elimated those three. Hopefully with Warren and Margoluis yet to go, there will be something left. Maybe be forced to vote none of the above...

Anonymous said...

Not meaning this in negative way at all. Why is Warren a good candidate?
I keep hearing that he is really good, but have not heard why.
I'm still undecided.

Warren is a nice guy and very popular in town. Not much of a public speaker, but does that matter? Maybe not, as long as we find out where he stands on the issues.

Margolious is my favorite. I like his stance on the "role of government" and he is doing his homework.

Warren has ties to Ark City Industries...so I trust him not.

ACI is all about profit for the shareholders, regardless of what Mr. Sybrant says. If this were not true, and the stock was worthless ($100.00/share) then why would there be so many trying to buy up remaining shares? ACI currently holds over 2 million in assests. They are responsible for the development out by the AC Country Club (Including getting AC to run sewer out there long before it was annexed). This did not benefit AC in any way.
Why did they want to bring in Lowe's and donate the land to do so? So the remaining land around the Lowe's development, which ACI owns, would become more valuable.

Watch carefully for this one. Arleta is pulling his strings just to get an interview out of him.

And Arleta is vying for the Hospital board position.

Mark my words we are about to get screwed.....AGAIN!

That's the part that I don't think the average taxpayer understands. Not all developments,
although they are improvements, are a benefit to the City.
That's also how a few can LEGALLY
SEPARATE the many from some of their money!

I think the three interviews were interesting and that Kanyon and JJ make a good team!
Patrick was a little vague on some of his answers - he would defer to staff - seem to be a common thread.
Matthews has some previous experience and has a good knowledge of financing. He also sees the need to concetrate on core services.
Snell was interesting as well he understands the lack of involvement by the younger generations. He also had a good grasp of the retail aspects of the Area and the need to increase the population.
I will anxiously be awaiting the remaining interviews.

And? What the hell is wrong with that? If they make a profit, and Ark City gets some much needed places to eat and shop, what's wrong with that? Do you think all the businesses you see going in in Derby or Wichita don't have people making money from the land they build on?

It's called capitalism. I realize that Socialism, and even communism are all the rage now with the young people and our president, but I don't like it one bit.

I have just heard many many good things about Warren. He is smart and willing to give of his time to many causes. I think he would make a great commissioner. He may not be the best public speaker, but just because we picked a President because he was the better speaker/dresser, doesn't mean we should pick our commissioners that way. Besides, he will get better as he goes along. I'd rather have someone of high moral character who didn't speak in public so well that someone who is at home behind the mic but has less than stellar morals. cough*Kuhn*cough

Well lets see - they make money off or/with the Public's money - then the 0lder parts of town go unkept. But who is still responsible for the repairs that are needed or didn't get done?
I don't have a problem with Capitalism! I do have a problem when the Private sector sees the Public money as an easy source to tap!
Its not win-win when your taking money from the city to promote or subsidize one group or property and then allowing needed things in other areas - that are owned by people paying taxes - to be neglected!

Anonymous said...

BTW: Websters Dictionary

Capitalism - The economic system in which the means of distribution and production are privately owned and operated for Private Profit.

Capitalist - a person who invests in a business!

Where does it say anything about
Public or community.

The very fact that you can't distinguish between Private and Public is a sign of socialism at work!

How exactly would they be taking money from the city, or using tax payer money? It seems to me that the business that buys or leases their land might get a tax break, but that would not be giving the land owner money. Please explain your logic. It seems flawed.

I have a question, but I don't know who to ask. I've watched the commission meetings on TV and seen that some commissioners talk a lot and others seem more to listen. OK, my question is does it work that way in their other meetings? Are they the same in private or are the noisy ones noisier or do the quiet ones speak up? The ones who talk the most don't seem to quite know what they are talking about, sort of rambling around with various ideas instead of telling us more about the topic. Don't they argue that all out in private? Can anyone give a better description of what really happens in those meetings?

I can offer some insight on this one.
I go to the work session meetings.
You really should go to one sometime. They can get very confusing.
They do usually talk out all the issues at the work session, which is why they have so many unanimous votes.
The mayor does tend to talk the most at the regular meeting, just because of his or her position as the meeting moderator.
Not so at the work session.
At times at the work session, there might be 3 different conversations going on at once.
it is not nearly as structured.
And they go back and forth on topics.
I think there is more talk by all of the commissioner at the worksessions. But you do have one taking more at some than others.
For awhile Scott was not talking much. Seems now, or recently, Patrick has not been talking as much.
Joel is much more talkative at the work session than he is at the regular meeting.
A lot of it is personality.
Does that help

I like Scott Margolius, he has desire to dig in and there have been times that he votes no alone. I saw a spread sheet that proved that Pat McDonald voted more with Dotty and more with the Mayor "Kuhn" that Scott did.
I think the amigo should be renamed meagreePat.

Mr. Scott M. is well read, articulate & caring. Whether you like it or not, he does vote his conscience. Mr. Matthews could be good, i.e., past experience on commission + in the banking industry & he would have time to devote to the task. Mr. Warren is good, too. I think Mr. Snell could do a good job too. Considering his past life experiences & education (must say, I don't care for his sledgehammer approach, that's part of the problem now) Mr. McDonald has experience on the job and I think it probably does take several years to really "figure out" what the job entails. hmmm :)

My Great Grandpa Llew was a founder of ACI and I myself speak on behalf of my fathers shares. Do you think that we are all crooks? Careful when speaking of that you know nothing about. ACI does a lot of projects that make them no money what so ever. They arte not the mafia.

Also I have nothing to do with the sale of Bryants. Whoever bought the cash register got a steal. I was pushed out 2 weeks ago and wish that everyone would now call it what it is, the Union State Bank Hardware Sale. I would guess by not assuming the debt they also did not assume the name and seeing as they only hired one employee from the earlier business (that they are related to) I would like to stop seeing my family name on mail out fliers and articles when pretaining to the sale. It is misleading to make people think they are helping me in some way. They aren't and if you have questions about the sale please quit calling my cell phone and just contact Union State Bank at 442-5200.

I like everyone running for commision. They are all great people to sit down with and talk to. Kind of a cop out I know but there honestly is not a name on the ballot that wouldn't be good in the position. I just hope as the race wraps up they can all avoid the slander and just speak on what they feel is the best for our city.

I'll help pass the word Zach. The USB HARDWARE SALE. As I'm sure others will. Typical money hungry bank...they should of at least donated antiques to the museum.

How much did you owe? I heard they sold more in one day than you have in the past 3-4 months. Granted, they should probably have donated some items to the museum, but they do not get as much taking a tax write-off than a straight out sale. If Zach had actually been doing his job (running the store), instead of spending his time during the day playing on the Internet (blogging) and playing with his skateboard, most likely the bank would have not taken over the business. As for the name,it is Bryant's Hardware, always been, and most likely will always be known as the Bryant's Hardware building. Don't let your failure ruin your family's legacy. You (and others) are trying to blame a bank for your financial problems. If I decided not to pay my mortgage, a bank would foreclose on me in a heartbeat, and sell it. It is people like you, who want to blame everyone except yourself, for the financial mess the country is in now. Do you want USB, or Home National, or Cornerbank, to go down like the big banks in the US because they lend money to risky, i.e. people who do not what to take responsibility, people? Do you think they all site around and debate on which hometown business to foreclose on this week? "Gee, we shut down Bryant's this week. Why don't you shutdown Spark's next week, and then Foster's the week after".

Zach said...

Sorry didn't mean to come across that I was complaining. I just thought the goal was to make back as much money as possible. Shouldn't something like the cash register have gone at auction to make this possible? I mean honestly you are right though USB could sell everything for a quarter and in the end I would be in the same boat as I am now. The sad part I see is that the register didn't even cover the cost of the give aways they are doing meaning they will have a harder time making up the money they were hoping for. Just my opinion but I do know I wasn't asked for it.

I believe I did shoulder the blame. Did I not write that in a previous blog? Here is a question for you though since you know so well. I didn't have 30 customers in the store on a given day since opening it yet when sale signs go up they get 30 before 8:00 so do you really think their high sales were do to the fact that they do better business than myself or do you think it might have to do with the yellow and pink signs? I'm not blaming USB for anything, I never have in fact I have done quite the opposite but at the same time I don't understand some of the decisions they made. Foreclosing on me never happened but I guess you are the expert. They assumed the business assets, if the assets sell for more than is owed to the bank then some of the suppliers and investors can be paid back (these are the banks words not mine) so I guess I do still have an interest in that seeing as how I'd like to see some of the people that put money and inventory into the place get back at least a portion of what they are owed. But hey you know the entire situation right so why don't you tell me all about it. While you are at it why don't you ask Larry Anderson why they didn't bring him in to help sort stuff and take home a pay check rather then hire a new crew? Or maybe ask who made an offer on the building but later backed out when they found out it was going to be stripped of all the shelves. Will it still be the Bryant's building when it is an empty husk? God I hope not.

Sorry to see Bryant Hardware is now USB Hardware (so to speak). Wondering why I got mail yesterday from "The Staff at Bryant Hardware" for the big sell-off--my notice a "week in advance" of the sale that started the same day I received the notice. It was addressed to me personally at my home address, but I wonder how USB got my name as it is not connected to my home address anywhere but in City water records. I'm thinking USB could've saved some money by saving their paper/printing/mailing by not sending out late mail like that, especially signed by people supposedly from Bryant Hardware, and by not having "prizes" at the end of the sale (prizes at a sale? what will they think of next?) And what are the "100,000 points" for? Anyone else get one of these notices? Hope they leave your name alone in the future, Zack. Let the garbage people dish out slide off your shoulders so you can get on with your life.

Forgot to add in my last post, to get back to the original strain, it will be difficult to choose for city commission this time around. Just hope everyone researches well and votes their conscience, no matter what everyone else thinks.

I got the same notice from what used to be Zach's store, or USB or wherever yesterday (Thursday 4/2) and wondered the same thing as the person a couple posts back.

I used to work at a local company that got taken over by a bank, and it is a bad deal when it happens. I hope you have a good lawyer Zach! Keep your head up, things will get better!

This isn't the right blog but, Jay Waren mentioned being on the board for his church, and rec center, but not his being on the boards of ACI and HNB wonder why he didn't mention that.

Quit giving Zach a hard time.

Haven't you been seeing the news about all the out of work people going on killing sprees?

It's okay Zach, you did great.. it's just the economy that made people stop coming in your store. It's our fault for driving to lowe's to pay less. We are sorry Zach. Really REALLY sorry. Please don't hurt us.

It is a tough time. I find it very hard to take that Bill Docking had a part is closing down Bryant Hardware.

Bill owns most things in town, from the radio station to hardware stores to god knows what. Between Winfield and Ark City, there are only a few real owners who hide behind the scenes. If you go to these businesses, there will be someone else who says they are the "owner" but when it all boils down, it is Bill or one or two others.

If it was all about management, Bill could have lent a hand and kept the place going.

Maybe it was all about advertising, pricing and promotion, but I suspect that was not the deal either.

The reality is it was probably all about how locals support local businesses and how much discretionary money is spent in Ark City.

In any case, it is too bad.

The truly sad part is that now the national economy has tanked, all of this tomfoolery hogwash that has passed over the last 20 years in Ark City as "economic development" has left Ark City in much worse conditions than the rest of the country.

While America struggles to recover, Ark City will have to struggle more, because it never got the economic boost and growth that the rest of the US did.

It now has even less to offer. Now not even the landmark hardware store exists.

Permanent Ark City history was made when the Dockings closed down the Bryants.

Best of luck to you Zach.
There are nicer places to live than Ark City. I wouldn't blame you.

It all boils down to the few old money people who own most of the businesses and run the city from behind the curtain, man. The Elite that want this country to fail so they can buy up the left overs for little money and then rebuild with themselves in charge, man. And do you know who is behind them, man? The grays, man. It's true, man. The governament doesn't want you to know, man. The grays run this whole world, man. Ever since Roswell, man. It's true man. John Lennon knew the truth, and that's why the government had him assassinated, man. Heavy stuff, man.

Has anyone noticed that Margolius seems to be putting his signs with other candidates? No apparent rhyme or reason. Is he trying to gain votes by choosing a side? Is he not one of the 3 who blocked Lowes? Who is he trying to gain from? On top of that, his ads seem to be saying "I didn't do this, but..." while listing the accomplishments of a previous commission. Who is he trying to confuse? Is this Washington, D.C. politics in action?

Fry and Matthews signs seem to be very popular in front of empty run down houses. Any ideas why? I thought maybe Commissioner Dotty was behind it, but I know for a fact she is backing Margolius. Though Margolius seems to be trying to be separting himself from Mayor Kuhn and Commissioner Dotty. After touting their breakaway style for 2 years, why is he trying to separate himself now?

It's to avoid backlash toward the breadwinner in the family. I imagine it was dictated to him, in no uncertain terms, EXACTLY how to run his campaign. Win-win, baby.

I think he realizes that when people think of him, they associate him with Kuhn and Smith as an amigo who voted down the Lowe's without even taking the next step in discovery.

It is the bed he has made for himself. I bet if he had it to do over again, he'd vote differently.
