city

City Commission is starting to get things cranked up after several slow meetings. Last night's work session was relatively short, and tonight's meeting has only a few items, but wheels are in motion.

Improving infrastructure and the appearance of the city are at the top of goals listed for the coming year by the city commission. Recruiting business and industry are there as well.
They may talk about their goals more tonight.

Some things are coming down the pike that won't be on tonight's agenda.
They are thinking about putting some requirements on people for replacement of windows. This could help take care of some of the downtown buildings that have windows covered with wood or tin.
They will require windows to be replaced with glass, or sealed off with the same type of material as the building.
As one of the commissioners noted, a piece of glass is not any more expensive than a piece of plywood.

There will be some public hearings in April on the goals.

I hope they make them put in glass or plexi-glass.

Concrete sealed windows don't look any better then wood or tin.

The issue is not cost of glass or plywood. Most of the turn of the century window frames are wood that have rotted out. Replacing frames is way more expensive than screwing a plywood cover over it.

Considering there is a significant tax rebate for the expense it might be a big expense, but will eventually be reclaimed by the building owners.

It sure will go a long way toward making Ark City downtown more attractive.

If there is a requirement for glass or plexiglass, it shouldn't permit someone to just screw a piece of plate plastic over the window opening. That would be almost as bad as the barn roofing.

Several of the building owners downtown are out of town owners and are not real eager to spend money.
Hopefully the city can "encourage" them to fix it up.

Of the three worst looking downtown buildings (at least in terms of windows) that I can think of only 1 of those is owned by an out of town person.

Unless, 1 of those has changed hands. I guess you could count the building where Patrick has his bookstore as several buildings but they are all owned by the same person who is out of town.

Anyway, I hope they can "encourage" them to do something.

I really, really hope that don't let them concrete in the window. I would also imagine that the state historical society would have some serious issue with just throwing up a piece of plex-glass over the window opening.

improve infrastructure, really????????? ask any city employee and they will tell you they are told not to spend any money or fix anything. Someone needs to find out where the water and sewer fund money is going. there are laws on how it is supposed to be spent, but you only need to drive by the city water plant by paris park to see how shameful they have let things become. judging by the paper, the city cant even keep help anymore. they are too busy not spending money on them either. someone needs to question what is happening under the new city manager. and why he got a raise for all of this. and why does kan pak stink up the whole town and they city does nothing when u call?

You could go to the meetings and see for yourself.
Or even go through their web site and look up stuff.

The CM could just get along and go along, but he is trying to make a difference.
