What I like in Arkansas City

Ok, here goes.
There are things that are good about Arkansas City. Here are my favorites.

Food category
Breakfast - Bricks.
Pizza - Mozittis.
Fast Food - Wendys.
(used to be Taco Bell. Dont know what has happened there, service and quality has gone down in last few months.)
Convenience store - Jump Start on Madison and Summit.
Ice Cream - Braums
Salad Bar - Dillons
Best lunch in town - Carls BBQ .. really good and inexpensive. Wish they would move more to downtown and be open more days.
Daisy Mae's gets a honorable mention here
Best place to go hang out to talk with someone with a coke or coffee or whatever - Grinderman, love their cookies too.

Ourdoors.
Streets to walk on
North THird and Fourth
North or South B st.
Summit is ok downtown
Hiking in town .. The paths behind Kneebler pond off Kansas Ave. Great winding trails, you can get really lost there, and its quiet. Good place to think, meditate, commune and all sorts of hippie-type things.
The new paved trail around Veterans Lake, but I just hate paved walking areas. Just doesnt seem natural :)
(Of course I know walking on the levee isnt really legal, so, i cant mention that. I dont know anything about walking on the levee, ok? )

Quiet place - McFarland Pond, formerly known as North Pond. Also good for bird watching.

Shopping in town... McDonalds books, Mylisas antiques, ACE, Orsheln's.
Groceries - Dillons.

Some general stuff that is cool.
Basketball, Volleyball games at Cowley..
Music at Browns, Coffee at Browns...

Lots of cool looking old buildings,
There are also a lot of nice houses... i know a favorite thing to complain about is the old worn out houses, and that is true, but there are some nice ones here and there.
Along North B there are several.

Ok thats a start
What do you all think.

Chaplin Nature Center
Brick streets
Beautiful architecture- check out the Presbyterian church if you have never been in it.
Burford Theater- not just after the renovation but for all the great memories I have of going to the movies.
Graves- love the soda shop.
Brown theater- really is a beautiful theater for the size of the town.

Favorite things to do: Arkalalah, car show weekend, drag strip, figure 8 racing, Brown's mini concerts, canoeing Grouse (and Walnut River, but don't let anyone tell you it's only a 4 hour trip from Winfield to Ark City!, dinner theater at the museum, birthday parties at Sally's Palace

Things I would like to do: More public fishing, ATV paths, camping on the river, outdoor concerts

Ok, like James said this never "really" happened. I'm not sure, but this is probably illegal.

Some of my favorite days in Ark City (all in my imagination, right?) was spent on the river at an undisclosed location. Friends hanging out, tailgating and riding 4 wheelers on the sandy river beaches. There's nothing like riding through the shallow water, throwing waves on innocent bi-standers. We were listening to some great music from someone's pick-up, wading in the water, laughing and having the times of our lives! Too bad there was not some place to do this legally! Now, while I know our rivers are nasty and polluted, we probably were not helping the situation? We did pick up all of our trash, though!

Still, the best time of my life and it was right here in the good ol' AC America!

If this really happened, I mean...

Taco Bell has really gone down hill lately. I had to give my order three times, and when she asked me to repeat it yet again, I drove off and went to Wendy's

Sounds like 2 days of uncontrollable unbridled fun.

Brick's for breakfast, Wendy's for lunch, Italian in the evening at Mozitti's.

Tomorrow:
Daisy Mae's (but not on Monday) lunch at Carl's (no one really knows what days or what hours) and a Chocolate chip shake afterwards at Braums. Fill the tank at Jumpstart.

That's it. Got'er done.

2 days. Need more.

At least you got someone to answer you at Taco Bell. I sat there for 10 minutes, went on around to the window thinking there speaker wasn't working and was then told I'd have to pull forward and wait on my order as I was out of turn. I went inside and the manager made my order for me. The lady at the window was very put out with me. Gee, I thought I was the customer?

Wendy's has great service!

I don't know of anything wrong with riding on the beach. It's only the levees they say you can't ride on. As long as you're not on private property, or have permission from the owner.

Drove around the town was a very nice day, wife tagged along, bought some clothes on sale at JC Pennys, wife bought some stuff at bed bath an beyound. I bought some books at the very large book store, wife stayed and had coffee while I went next door to Lowes and picked out a new skill saw. By then we were worn out and hungry, ate at the texas road house, bought some gas and came home. Sorry AC spent day in Stillwater!

where i lived before, Wendys was notorious for getting orders wrong. didn't matter what you ordered, you would get something else anyway. But they are good here.

We do need more river access as i have said. The hike and bike trail would facilitate that.

This string is about what we like about Arkansas City... can we get some of that going ?

Anonymous said...

Cowley always has great plays, theatre, music, & other offerings.

Anonymous said...

I totally and completely disagree with the poster who said they spent the day in Stillwater!!!!

Eskimo Joe's is much better than Texas Roadhouse. Or Joseppi'a for italian food and live music.

Anonymous said...

Totaly agree! Eskimo Joes is better. Plus I had ate there the week before! Variety what a concept!

Start the day with a Lil Abner at Daisy Mae's (or a skillet at Brick's)

Head downtown to Graves, what you need and fun to look. Walk down to Bryant's and see what all is different. Cross the street and down to Stage to see what's on sale. Finish off the morning walking to the book store and getting my weekly fix.

In the afternoon I like to take a walk. East Poplar has been nice enough, but the new trail at 6th Street pond (er, Veteran's Lake) is my new favorite. When it warms up a bit I'm going to bring my fishing pole when I take my walk!

In the evenings I love to sit out on the front porch and watch the world go by. Though there are a few cars that go by much too fast, the people that walk by are always friendly and usually stop to say hello. I'm really looking forward to spring so I can do that every day instead of a few minutes on the occaisional semi-warm afternoon.

I used to enjoy reading the paper in the evenings, but the stories all seem to have the same slant to them anymore... if you know what I mean. So now I just watch the news. I can't wait for summer so I can sit out on the porch instead and watch the fireflies.

You've forgotten about counting cars.
That's really the best thing to do in AC.

chaplin nature center , state lake , lets not forget grouse creek, coffee break ,or the fishin derby ,
taco bell has went down hill and we need to complain about it to the headquarters they give you a # on your reciept to call in the survey call it in and say they suck if enough do it we will get our taco bell back

I really enjoy how nice the downtown area looks now. I enjoy Brown's coffee and their mini-concerts. Mozitti's is great & the new Pizza Hut is really nice too. I enjoy living in a small town and for the most part feeling safer. Less traffic! Going to the bank and feeling like they know you and you can deal with them on a personal level (my bank is USB). I have lived here all my life and although sometimes I think it would be nice to move away -- IT'S HOME!

The Burford seems to show up in many of these discussions.

How about showing up for Saturday work sessions from 9-12 (or any part thereof.) Current projects are the removal of the stage flooring, seating, and concrete under the seating.

The pay is non-existent, the coffee questionable, water cold, feelings great.

I'm glad someone mentioned the Coffee Break! How do they make those hashbrowns? They should get a patent on those. Love 'em!

Also, you will never see the bottom of your coffee cup. Service is outstanding.

I like the Fire Department! I got to watch them work at a house on fire on south 1st yesterday. I have never scene anything like it,the house was completly in flames and within a few minutes it was out! It was the first time I had ever scene them work, feel blessed to have them if I need them.
Also like Green door chips and cheese!

You've forgotten about paint.
Watching paint dry is really the best thing to do in AC.

I don't live in AC anymore... but I still have dreams about the Green Door's chips and cheese.

These are the must hit places for me when I visit.

1. Sonic - don't have them anywhere close to where I live but they have commercials on television! I think it is some sort of cruel joke.

2. Green door
3. Grinder man - for a cookie.
4. Taco Tico
5. I usually go to Brown's to use the wireless internet and a cup of joe.
6. I have found some great books at McDonald's. Seriously, I was really surprised to pick a couple of Kurt Vonnegut books.
7. Antique Mall- I look in the clothes section. Where I live that stuff is considered "vintage" and would cost an arm and a leg. I have gotten stuff for just a couple of bucks. Unfortunately, the last time I was in there the clothes section was stuffed full of boxes so I couldn't even look at them.
8. Usually I make a trip into Sparks-- bought a guitar at a very good price there a couple of summers ago.

I usually walk all over the place while I am there, too.

I just remembered another one... the bike shop!

I bought a bike there when I headed off to college. I custom ordered it for a good price and absolutely excellent service.

It was later stolen but we had a good run together....

hmmm maybe we have more eating places than we realize.
also Subway. Maybe i go there too much, they know my name and what im going to order.

But if someone opened a coffee shop downtown, with breakfast, maybe lunch.. kinda like brown's but bigger.
Like college hill coffee shop in Winfield.. is that the right name ?

I think they would do well.

Anonymous said...

I love coffee shops, too. They just seem to have a hard time making it in this town.

Anonymous said...

We definitely need more breakfast places in town. After church on Sundays we like to go eat breakfast and McDonald's and Brick's only goes so far.

sonic has a nice breakfast burrito ... get the surpreme.

Let's face it. If any of these stores and restaurants were on Rock Road north of West Kellogg, they would be out of business in 30 days.

We patronize them because they are here and we don't like to travel, and we know the people and we like the people, not because the stores are so good. There are serious compromises we make to support the businesses, but we all cowboy up and do it anyway.

So let's not make up any stories about what a great (fast food restaurant) we have. The normal service anywhere in Ark City is surly and inattentive and completely unsupervised.

The nicest time in Ark City is in the spring when all the flowers and flowering trees bloom. It smells like a perfume factory. Very nice.

Anonymous said...

Does that mean you don't appreciate the service at Graves or Brown's? Are people not friendly at the banks? How about Bryant's or Radio Shack?

Where on Rock Road do the waitresses know you by name and what you like? Where on Rock Road do you run into friends you know, talk with, maybe even sit with?

If you have a problem, how often can you ask for the owner to come out and settle for you on Rock Road?

Yeah, let's face it, Ark City isn't as fancy or glitsy as Rock Road, nor as expensive, nor as unfamiliar. Ark City isn't and won't be that different experience. Ark City will be what you know, what you can depend on, and people you know what to expect from.

You might get tired of the simple things, but when the glitz gets to be too expensive, it's nice to come home to friends.

Sorry:

I meant the food service.

The normal "food" service anywhere in Ark City is surly and inattentive and completely unsupervised.

And, yeah, I've had crappy service at the bank. They smiled when they did it, but it was crappy service.

I've run into a number of friends at the Warren. I've been surprised. About one time out of three. More than I've run into at the B&B.

"If you have a problem, how often can you ask for the owner to come out and settle for you on Rock Road?"

I commented to the waiter (not complained) about an order at On the Border not being quite right and they comp'ed me the whole meal and brought me a free dessert.

I've had stale and moldy toast at Bricks and they just got me more toast.

the ladies at bricks are always nice to me, keep the coffee coming and they fix anything that needs fixing.

sometimes service is bad at some places, but its also true that sometimes the customer is part of the problem :)

but then i came from south carolina, i was used to everyone calling me "honey" or "sweetie" or some such just for ordering a cup of coffee.
definitely a different world :)

I didn't say they weren't nice, because they always are. I've eaten there many times since. Not bad service. (I always look at the toast before I bite, though)

It was a reply to the statement that in contrast to Ark City, you can't get the owner to come out and adjust things in Wichita. I have found that they actually will do it there, at least in one location.

Traveler Editor said...

A lot depends on how you go about complaining :)
Usually they will make things right wherever you are. If they dont, i dont go back.

What I would like to see in Arkcity is a resturant that is family friendly downtown. I took my grandsons to eat downtown this past weekend. I had decided I would spend a bit of my money in the down town area to support them. After taking an 8 year old and a 1 year old to Bricks we looked at the menu. I asked if they had a kids menu, the waitress politely said "no". I asked if we could order half orders of the adult menu, she said she didn't think so but she would ask. She came back from the kitchen and said "he said no". Of course she was not given a reason why. Although I think I know why.
I suggest that if Bricks wants my business again, they will have to be more family friendly and serve childs portions. If not I will go out north to the steak house where I can pay according to age of my grandchild. Or out to the truck stop, they will sell me half orders of the adult menu. There is no way my grandchild can eat a whole adult portion but yet they expect me to pay for it. Won't happen again.

Traveler Editor said...

that is a good example of a poor business practice.
try Grinderman, they'll do just about anything for you.

you make a good point. businesses do need to take care of their customers.
we should try to shop with local businesses, but that doesn't give them a free pass :)
