Pit Bulls in Newkirk

NEWKIRK, Okla. (AP) _ A Kansas man has been arrested on animal abuse complaints after authorities in Kay County say they discovered nearly 100 neglected pit bulls at a rented farm near Newkirk.

Kay County Undersheriff Steve Kelley says 32-year-old Jerry Southern of Wichita, Kan., was arrested Tuesday and is being held in the Kay County Jail.

Kelley says his office received an anonymous tip that led to the discovery of 96 pit bulls. He says most of the dogs were chained to logs while about 10 were found locked in a barn with no food or water.

Southern told authorities he shows and sells the dogs but no one was buying them.

Kelley says his office is looking for organizations to help rescue the dogs and make food donations.

This guy looks like a real scumbag. I hope he goes to prison.

Can't wait to see if PETA gets wind of this. Maybe some of those crazy hippy chicks will show up and put on one of their "I'd rather be naked..." protests. haha

Humane Society may not be staffed or have $$ to deal with this many dogs.

What a shame. This breed is a nice dog. Too bad idiots like this do stuff like this.

Any breed CAN be a nice dog, but I would bet most of these dogs are not trustworthy. Where are you going to find homes for them when most cities have laws against owning them. Most will have to be put down. I'm kinda surprised that the deputies didn't have to put some down at the scene.

Put all the dogs in the barn and then throw the scumbag in and lock the doors until they are though with him.

Stuff like this breaks my heart, You know why he had so many DOG FIGHTING!!

Better yet feed them the Big Three Auto CEO's, UAW President, a few lobbyist and some Senators.
Don't be surprised when even the hungriest Pit chooses to starve!

Not a big fan of the breed but these dogs had no chance from the looks of the environment they were being kept in.

Saw it on the news last night. Can't believe it took this long to uncover something like this. I think there is more to the story since the guy lives in Wichita and was breeding the dogs in Oklahoma. Hope the entire truth comes out.

Let's hope that shelters across the country will step up and take the dogs in... especially the pups.

Following is the "Do Something" appeal with one of the larger employers in Kay County. It is what people should be doing instead of debating:

Sandy James at the UML (old R&D East Building) is rallying up donations to help the 96 dogs left chained without food and water. Dog food and water buckets are desperately needed. Those wanting to donate should have their donations at the UML (enter through Gate G) by 5:00 p.m. Friday, 12/5/08 and all donations will be loaded and transported to the Sheriff’s office. Please pass the word.

Off the subject but saw the update that the ACHS principal has resigned today effective at the end of the school year.

Anyone else think that it could be pressure from above or that maybe the high school really has gotten out of control???

Hmmmmm

She probably wants to go to a school with less troubled youth and illegal immigrants. Can't say I blame her.

Hopefully we can get a principal who cares about the students, and not the administrating. I know, from personal experience, if there is an infraction she either passes it on to Pfannestiel if she can, or looks it up in the handbook, doles out prescribed punishment, and forgets it. Doesn't talk to the kid, parent, etc. She knows, from the way the wind is blowing, that she is going to be accountable in the near future for stuff she would rather not deal with. She realizes she is not made of the stuff it takes to correct the problems (or "alleged" problems, for you naysayers). Someone like Morgan Freeman with a bullhorn and a baseball bat might work.

Someone may want to correct me here, but I believe that Kansas has stricter kennel laws than Oklahoma. I've been told that's why there are so many more breeders (puppy mills) there.

I might speculate that Sharon quit because she has lost the public's confidence. The Traveler poll shows 65% of people believe the problem at the High School is out of control. Wether or not this is true doesn't matter. Perception is everything. My only fear is that Ballard and the like will use her as a scapegoat for all the troubles there.

9mm 15 cents each. .15 X 90 = $13.50 problem solved. Keep the other 6 to clean up the mess.

Yep. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Think of the kids who will be saved.

You haven't priced 9mm ammo lately, it would be closer to 20 cents each, but I agree with the sentiment. Even if you like well breed and raised pit bulls, these weren't; and they will never do well in a home and aren't allowed in most cities. Most will end up put to sleep anyway, so why spend tons of money and manpower to heal them up and try to find homes for them?

I have to disagree with the sentiment in posts 1:05, 6:10 and 11:00. In looking at the picture gallery, those dogs are not pure bred and most definitely have a chance to be rescued.

I also believe that the experts who are looking at these poor animals will safely determine if the animals should be put down or not.

While I have NEVER been a fan of the ACHS and their attitudes on some of the children that go to their schools, I think that this comment you make is one of the reasons we are in trouble here. Calling an educator "rubbish" or any other name is out of line. This woman made a call on what she thought was right, whether it was a mistake or not she is leaving. So if you really want to make a difference in your local high school voluteer to be a hall monitor, or a lunch or parking lot attendant. It is really easy to have an attitude when you arent doing anything to relieve the problem. If you don't have time that is understandable, but lose the attitude! There IS always private school for your little darling.
As far as posting such a comment on this thread, WE WERE TALKING ABOUT PIT BULLS HERE, find your own thread!

That was my post. I was referring to the post immediately previous to mine! Y' know, the subject of the thread? Pit Bulls? As in the famous quote' "I don't know what happened, they were always good around MY kids..." I have nothing but the utmost respect for educators. Not so much for administrators, about the same as, say, for lawyers. They provide a useful service, I'm sure.

And by the way, I have 3 kids in the ac system, and have logged countless hours as room parent, PTO and site council member, recess monitor, field trip helper, whatever they need. I am not a saint, by any means, but I try to do my part. It is you, my friend, who is WAY out of line. I do not expect an apology, but perhaps an admission of error.
