small fire at high school

Before the rumor mill gets out of hand.
There was a small fire in a dryer at the high school this morning.
The fire was put out by the fire dept., Kids were evacuated to another building until the smoke was removed from the building.
It was mostly smoke, not sure if there were ever any actual flames.
Parents were notified via an email from the school.
Details in todays paper

Nice job jj. Thanks for the info.

I heard a kid brought in his pet fire breathing dragon and it got lose.

Half the school rooms had heavy smoke damage and the police ended up having to shoot the dragon several times to kill it. Now the city dept is trying to figure out how to remove the dragon's body.

Yea, its getting to where you can't take your dragon out in public anymore.

Why lay off Marshall James? Just because you think marijuana needs to be legalized, we don't. He is a drug pusher and needs to go down for his habits. And so do you, if you condone his actions.

I guess the Traveler doesn't have an axe to grind with Ice...

You people are a little on the looney side. Get a life. Go ahead, quit your advertising and supporting the station, why punish the whole place? Just run something else out of town that supports this town dwindling to nothing but illegals and fast food. Not gonna hurt the owner, he could just pick up and move somewhere else. No, I don't condone the drug use, but I have my priorities in a different order. I have a bigger problem with Thurber than a pot smoker.

Anonymous said...

This is the double standard of which I speak of in this town. Do we get to now ban all radio personalities from downtown areas because a few have commited a crime? I personally am glad for once that it isn't the skaters making the cover and police notes. What do you know an actual crime. Never mind the burned songs they play on air without paying artists their royalties, never mind the lack of knowledge about the music in which they play, never mind the cussing myself and others recieved for not wanting to advertise with the station in the first place. Truely I am sorry, sounds like the man has a problem and needs some help, but that doesn't mean we get to look the other way just because he attends the same partys as us. Thank you Ark City police Department, for getting a pound of marijana off the street within mere blocks of the skaters, who terorize this towns, school. Lord knows if only the pot would have been tied to a board on four wheels the town would support the arrest and not defend him.

Traveler Editor said...

i really dont think anyone is defending him.

Anonymous said...

I bet we would all be shocked to know how many people indulge in the wacky weed here in good ol' Ark City. Prominent people who are pillars of the community. The police will never bust them because they are smart enough to keep it on the down low and buy from people who are also above suspicion. Maybe Marshall will give some of them up. We can hope.

Anonymous said...

James, I hope you can encourage your friend Mr. Ice to find a good lawyer and seek treatment/counseling.

It is very disappointing when friends let you down in such a way.

Anonymous said...

let him down is right... now he has to find a new go to guy.

Anonymous said...

So did they really raid the State Line bar?

Anonymous said...

Oh please Zach, I have my serious doubts they are the only station burning music. Bet you are the sweet little angel who does nada thing, huh?

Anonymous said...

I don't have a problem with the skateboarders, except when they ride in front of cars.

Anonymous said...

Regardless of if they are the only staion that doesn't pay royalties or not doesn't matter. It is still pirating, still illegal, and still openly admited to by their dj Popcorn. "Bring me whatever songs you want to here and I'll play them." seems to be his classic pick up line. But once again defend him. Because you are correct, if I break the law it means it is okay for everyone else, huh? No, not in the least. I don't know I just see a back page full of names on this topic every night. If you ask me should it be legal I'll say sure, the fuel resources alone are worth looking into, but again it is illegal and, do to my liking of women and not inmates named Buhbuh, I refrain. I'm not perfect by any means and I never said I was. Just would like to see this "piller of the community" with amounts of marijana equaling a fellony and intent to sale in a school zone, get the same treatment as everyone else sitting in the courthouse. I think a good point was made earlier that Mel makes a distasteful joke and the Traveller fries him, a drug dealer gets arrested and JJ takes the stance of he doesn't do that he's my friend. Double standard? I ask you.

It's time to tell the truth about Mr. Marshall Ice. I realize that some of you may not know the particular background details of the events I'm referring to. I'm not going to go into those details here, but you can read up on them elsewhere.

It is hard to decide what is stronger in Mr. Ice: his incredible stupidity as far as any real knowledge or ability is concerned, or the sleazy insolence of his behavior. Two quick comments: 1) He craves adulation and attendance, and 2) there's a chance that he will manipulate the public like a puppet dangling from strings before long. Well, that's extremely speculative but it is clear today that Mr. Ice might condone universal oppression sooner or later. What are we to do then? Place blinders over our eyes and hope we don't see the horrible outcome? His attempts to create a Frankenstein's monster are much worse than mere sectarianism. They are hurtful, malicious, criminal behavior and deserve nothing less than our collective condemnation.

I have always been an independent thinker. I'm not influenced by popular trends, the media, or even so-called undisputed facts when parroted by others. Maybe that streak of independence is what first enabled me to see that Mr. Ice's adherents claim that the masses are inane and unfit for citizenship. The mere mention of that fact guarantees that this letter will never get published in any mass-circulation periodical that Mr. Ice has any control over. But that's inconsequential because Mr. Ice hates people who have huge supplies of the things he lacks. What he lacks the most is common sense, which underlies my point that Mr. Ice has never satisfactorily proved his assertion that the Queen of England heads up the international drug cartel. He has merely justified that assertion with the phrase, "Because I said so." Now for some parting advice: Look at the facts. Analyze the arguments. Think about the motives of the people who are telling you that Mr. Marshall Ice's debauches are the result of a high-minded urge to do sociological research. And have confidence in yourself. Remember, Mr. Ice is unwilling to stand up for what is true and right if there is no personal advantage to him in doing so.

because he is a public figure, it went on the front.

James, I'll defend you. You are what seems to be a true friend. True friends are always in a tight spot during these types of incidents. True friends will not not throw the other out but will be there to support them in there time of need. You may condem there actions but will still provide support that may help turn this persons life around. Been there Done that!

The article said that there were many items of drug paraphernalia, which could be anything from scales to baggies, to bongs, to Doritos (okay, that last one was a joke), and that is most likely what determines if the police believe he is dealing. Also, he had to have dealt to someone for the cops to find out he was holding. They don't just kick in random doors looking for drugs.

Here's what probably happened: Somebody gets arrested or stopped for something unrelated and dope is found on them. The cops work a deal with the person to give up theri source. They get that person to make a controlled buy from said source. They get a search warrant and kick in the door. BUSTED!

Anonymous said...

I still don't get some of you people. Zach, like anyone else he is not getting special treatment. Unlike most people that get busted, it has made front page because he is a public figure. Your conversation says a lot about you and you simply have it in for the guy.
Uhh, to all the ones on here jumping James about defending the guy...If he was really his best buddy, don't you think he would of kept it off the front page? After all, he is the editor of the paper.

Anonymous said...

I'll put it simple.

Anything over 8 ghrams= dealing even if you do not sale. Hense he will go up for being a dealer. A pound is a felony so no more radio or gun purchases.

So believe what you want JJ but the weights and law remain the same. A dealer is a dealer cut and dry.

A pound of pot isn't exactly recreational use. It's enough to make Cheech and Chong nervous.

The police did a good job and I'm sure the investigation was more then knowledge of a bong and said bag od Doritos. I am sure the Ark City legal system will do a fine job here too.

Boy, some of you in here sure know alot about marijuana!

Uhhmmm...Zach? Isn't this the United States? Innocent until proven guilty. This is what he is being charged with. Unless the guy admits it, the court system has to prove it beyond reasonable doubt.

If any of you in here know the court system very well, if he "is" guilty, and he has not been in alot of trouble before, most likely he will get community corrections or probation.

This particular part of it is kinda bogus. He lives within 1000 feet of a school, ...
not defending him, but . as someone said, he is innocent till proven guilty.
He says it was not a pound, cops say "about a pound"
so we dont know how much it was yet,
it will come out when he goes to court.

Possesion for personal use (first offense) is a misdemeanor subject to 1 year in jail $2,500 fine. Regardless of amount.

The "1,000 feet school" law does not apply unless he is charged with Possesion with the intent of sale. Then you get into felony count.

Yeah, most likely he will get probation, unless there is evidence of him dealing.

Anonymous said...

I am sorry some of my facts were wrong. Here is actual law from the Drug Enforcement Administration.

World-wide outlooks on marijuana law are beyond the scope here, so only the US marijuana law is given a general overview.

General Marijuana Law of the United States of America

According to marijuana law possession of marijuana is an arrestable offense. For possession of an amount of one kilogram (2.2 lbs) or less, the crime is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. For possession of any amount over one kilogram, the crime is a felony, punishable by 1 - 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

The U.S. marijuana law states that the sale, cultivation or manufacture of marijuana, by law is a felony offense. If the amount is one kilogram or less, the mandatory minimum sentence is three years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. For an amount greater than one kilogram but less than 100 lbs, the sentence is a minimum of five years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000. For an amount up to 500 lbs, the sentence is a minimum of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $200,000. Any amount of 1,000 lbs or greater is punishable by life without the possibility of parole.

The penalties for sale of marijuana, according to the marijuana law, are enhanced if the sale takes place within a three-mile radius of a school or public housing project, adding five years to the sentence for the sale. Sale to minors (under 18) can increase the penalty by 10 years to life in prison, and no suspension or probation can be granted.

The possession or sale of drug paraphernalia, according to marijuana law, is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. If the paraphernalia is sold to a minor at least three years younger than the seller, the penalty becomes a felony and is punishable by 2 - 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

The marijuana law also states that any conviction for possession, sale, manufacture or cultivation also results in the suspension of the offender's driver's license for a period of six months.

This being said I think it is only pertinent to the blog. True I disagree with Mr. Ice and that is well known but many of you are right. I haven't responded in a very Christian way as my parents and grandparents would. I appologize to Mr. Ice for bringing him more stress during his time of trouble. As many people on here have pointed out, it isn't like I haven't been in trouble before. My advice sir is to find an outlet. For myself it is my sons sports, writing, and painting. Addiction is a horrible thing and I know this. If you need anyone to talk to about it Mr. Ice, even though we have had our differences, I'm here to listen to you. JJ someone put it right saying you are a good friend. Please continue to be supportive to him and help him now in his time of need. Once again sorry Mr. Ice, what you did was wrong but I do not need to make it worse. This was wrong of me.

3 Country Mart suspects get out of jail free
By Judy Welch
December 19, 2008

Three Winfield residents accused of the armed robbery of Country Mart in Arkansas City Sept. 21 were released from jail on their own recognizance Friday by order of District Court Judge Jim Pringle.

That means Harry Miller, 48, Antowne J. Martin, 19, and Michael Horn, 18, did not have to post a cash bond but only promised to appear in court for their next hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. March 26.

They were also ordered to report to a court services officer weekly and to remain in Kansas. Pringle also lifted a no contact order that would have kept the suspects from contacting one another.

Miller was already out of jail by 2 p.m. Friday. Horn's mother, Salena Dennis, 38, is also charged with armed robbery and was released from jail Nov. 18 after a professional bondsman posted her bond.

Martin and Horn also have criminal cases pending in District Court in Winfield before District Judge Nick St.Peter. They are suspects in connection with a bomb threat called in to Winfield High School Oct. 8. Both the high school and the middle school were evacuated while the buildings and grounds were searched.

The two are currently scheduled to appear in court on the bomb threat at 1:30 p.m. Jan 5. Bond in those cases earlier was set at $5,750 each but Martin and Horn were released on their own recognizance in that case, too. Both were released from custody by 2:30 p.m. Friday, according to jail officials.

The four were living together when arrested for the Country Mart robbery. Horn was enrolled in a Winfield schools student program that was not necessarily based at the high school, school officials have said.
_________________________________

WTF??? Has that judge lost his god damn mind? These people committed a violent crime, and he lets them out on the streets without even posting a bond?? Someone please tell me that judge Pringle is up for re-election soon.

Anonymous said...
