police stats

Did you all see the story about police stats and the new web site in the paper this week?
There is a new web site that shows where crimes are committed. Its a new site that the local police have subscribed to.
Here is a link to the story.
http://www.arkcity.net/stories/121108/com_0002.shtml

Its not up to the minute by any means, but the point is to show trends more so than breaking news.
It is an interesting visual, so see at a glance where crimes are in the city - as well as traffic accidents. You may also see stats from other cities, but its a fairly new program so there are not all that many cities on board. Ark City is the first in Kansas.

The cops also have a newsletter now.

..
Yea like the stinkin chiefs impersonating a football team.

Those crimes on the map are just the reported crimes. Want to get technical? Not everyone who gets in a fist fight reports it. Not every domestic battery is turned in, etc. I was joking with a friend the other day, that if the Chief was to map drug offenses, the whole map would be covered. No, not really that funny in the long run. I just hope we will not see a homicide pop up on that map.

I have seen a report like this in one of the wichita papers or news on line sites. Once again not to bust the bubble machine but this type of public notice is not new by any means!!!

You have taken negativity to a new level.
If someone says good morning to you, you probably argue the point.
Its free, costs nothing, as in zero tax dollars. You dont have to look at it.
No one was claiming to have invented the internet here.

Has the Traveler heard anymore about the supposed drive by shooting? Kinda curious!

In this particular case ... may just not be anything to say.

Yeah, you're probably right James. I have had some personal experience in an investigation from x months ago, no updates by the officer or anything. Oh well, its not their money, why worry.

What? The police don't want your help in solving the crimes of the city? I am shocked.

Police are not supposed to talk about an on going investigation to the public, thats the way it works. There job is to bring people to justice, not give them all the information they need to know when to run.

"...not give them all the information they need to know when to run."

Oh...you mean like we did Saddam in the 12 month public runup every available news outlet gave before we invaded?"
Kind of like that. Huh. Good thinking.
Ok, ok, ok, I know it's off topic, but...It's still true.

Anyway, back to topic. We do have to give the Chief credit, at least he is trying to be as open with us as possible.

Well, don't think my personal case would have any interest to the public, so I don't get why the po cant be bothered to pick up the phone and say hey, we are still working on your case.... and no i don't expect the police to release info on a public interest crime if they don't have any or it would hurt the investigation. Big duhhh!

Unfortunately, in Ark City, everything in everyones case or life is of public interest it seems to me.

@2:35 PM
Now that's a fact. Can I take a minute and beat a dead horse? Ok, thanks I will.

The only reason to publish police notes and such is to satisfy someone's morbid curiosity and nosiness. Does no Public good or service. Do they publish them in Wichita, Topeka, or OKC? NO. Why? Because it would have to be a Book and also no one cares. Only in Good 'ol A.C. do people feel everyone else's business is their right to know. "Public Record". Spare me the legalese doublespeak when translated means "I'm just plain nosey".

I agree completely with 11:45am!

Also drives me nuts when they will print a young perons name BEFORE charges are brought and the case is still under investigation.
