Bank Robbery suspect in custody

The Cops have a suspect in custody for the Home National Bank robbery.
Thats all the info I have at the moment. He (or she as the case may be) has not even been charged yet, but that should happen this morning.
I got an email from Chief Wallace. He is out of town but hopefully we will have more later on.
Ill get more soon.

Here is an image from the Country Mart robbery.

Again I must apologize for posting a positive comment on the blogs....

Thank you and good job to all of the law enforcement that worked on solving this crime.

ACPD, Cowley Sheriff, State troopers, FBI, and probably many more I don't know about. Excellent job.

Many people "know" how the police should do their jobs, but none of these people will step up and actually do the job of an law officer.

Anonymous said...

Yea ACPD and everyone!! Now lets hope they are able to catch the Country Mart suspects.

Traveler Editor said...

If enough positive posts are made, it might just have an influence:)

The cops do a good job. We "expect" them to solve crimes at least in part because they normally do.
If a couple weeks had gone by without an arrest, everyone would be asking "whats wrong with the cops>"

At least the poster is making positive posts. Seems like all you can do is whine and/or bitch.

Seems to me that all these robberies started after we have a gun shop in town

Anonymous said...

OH MY GOD! Seriously??? You think these robbers went to the gun shop, gave them their ID's, PASSED the Federal criteria for purchasing a gun, and then went and used the guns to rob the bank and the Country Mart, and jiffy trip?

HOW INCREDIBLY STUPID!

We have always had gun shops here. Criminals don't get their guns the legal way... they steal them, or buy them from other criminals.

It's irrational thinking like that that gets gun bans like DC's passed.

I contend that if we had more armed LAW ABIDING citzens, then we would have LESS crime, not more. If someone with a CCW had been in or around one of these businesses, there would probably be at least one less criminal scumbag in the world.

Anonymous said...

There could also be a dead clerk and innocent customer. You are assuming that the legal carrier of the weapon is a good shot, hits the right target and can do all of this while gettting an adrenalin rush and of course is NOT shaking. You are also assuming that the criminal will not shoot first, will not shoot back, take a hostage or if the crimnal (scumbag) fires he hits himself. misses all targets including the one with the legal weapon and any other innocent person.

No thanks. Lets just say we will leave catching and punishing the criminals to the authorities not the guy with the gun who may shoot his gun inaccurately.

Anonymous said...

You assume much. Most guys and gals who have concealed carry permits shoot more than the cops do.

The cops go to the range to qualify about twice a year. The state only mandates once a year. Not enough time to be as good as the ones who are out there several times a month, shooting because they enjoy it.

Anonymous said...

You are both right and your both wrong! Cops train and shoot to survive! not to be trick shot cowboys! The best advise I can give if you have a CCW is be a good witness. You are better off not to pull your weapon unless your are in direct fear of your life. Most LEO will tell you the same thing be a good witness, and most LEO confronted with the country mart senerio off duty and armed would probably not have engaged the armed robbers in the store. Both recent armed incidents could have turned out very different, with shots being fired and inocent people injured or killed.

Anonymous said...

Hats off to the police for catching the bad guy! I wonder why it took so long for us to find out. Was it a secret?

Anonymous said...

Well, how many bad guys have they caught? one? How about the other two from the bank, the four from country mart, or the three or four from jiffy trip? Maybe they are just waiting until they have more results before they start patting themselves on the back. After all, it is their job to catch them. You don't praise the guy at McDonalds for getting your order right. It's his job. It's only when they screw up that they get your negative attention.

Traveler Editor said...

The cops could be more open about things.
They had him on Friday. But did not let anyone know. and there were people within the PD who didnt want us to have it even now.
That is one criticism i have of the local cops that I believe is legitimate.
I understand protecting evidence, but ... the public needs to know.
I wont get started ok.
Putting soap box back in closet.

What makes you think the authorities are any better shot that a regular citizen and it is a fact that most officers love doing what they do because of the adrenalin and they shake too when in some intense situations. No officer want to shoot anyone nor does the average citizen, but the fact that someone the criminal may be able to defend themselves or other innocent by standers levels the field some. I would be willing to bet if they ever find the guns involved came from no where around here.

Anonymous said...

they have a suspect, this is still america, Inocent until proven guilty,,,,

I bet the guns used in all these robberies were not real, most crooks know it is better to take a chance on the victim learning you have a fake than the cobs busting you with a real weapon

Traveler Editor said...

>>>

Why don't you?

Anonymous said...

Not once did I say the authorities would shoot the criminal. I think it reads "catching and punishing" and does not mention the use of guns on them. You assume that is what I meant but that is not what it said. Don't assume.

Leave guns to hunting but not in the middle of a grocery store, bank or place of business and for sure NOT people.

Anonymous said...

I still say that if guns were not being sold in town then there would be no guns for the crimnals to steal. Guns are dangerous and the person with a gun is even more dangerous. We no longer have to hunt for food, so hunting is just an excuse. Simple really NO GUNSTORE = NO GUNS. The city should close them down. Why would the city give them a business licence anyway? Isn't it against the law to have guns downtown? People could walk in to any store with them and rob or shoot kids on the street or in the store. And kids can get the guns from grandpa or dad or uncle and shoot other kids in the school. Guns have to be outlawed.

Anonymous said...

Yea guess they'd have to go to winfield to buy their gun instead.

Anonymous said...

Ohhh boy, here we go....

They've been selling guns in Ark City for as long as I can remember. (that's a long time)

They call it Wal-Mart, K-Mart, pawn shops, etc.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. If there were no guns, then criminals will make their own with a pipe and a ball bearing.

I am a law-abiding citizen who plans on harming no one. You have a human right to defend yourself.

I guess an alternative is to beg a criminal breaking in on you to not harm you. (bad idea) Another, call the police after the crime is done and they can fill out a detailed report. (not good) no slam on LEO here, it's just that most of what they can do for you is after the fact.
A criminal is a lot less likely to go into a home that know the occupants are ARMED TO THE TEETH.

Anonymous said...

Do you think there is a chance they didnt release information about the case in an effort to catch the accomplices? (like having someone in custody!?!) Thats a thought.

Anonymous said...

"Simple really NO GUNSTORE = NO GUNS. The city should close them down."

Wow, you really are uninformed. You can buy guns anywhere if you are a law abiding, non mental, citizen of the United States. It's called the SECOND AMENDMENT!

>>"Isn't it against the law to have guns downtown?"

NO, it is not. Kansas has no laws restricting carrying of a gun, with the exception of certain government buildings, or carrying a gun concealed without the proper concealed carry license.

>>"People could walk in to any store with them and rob or shoot kids on the street or in the store."

Sure, technically they COULD do that. You COULD wake up and pull your head out, but I don't think THAT is probable either.

>>"Guns have to be outlawed.

Good idea. Then we can live in constant fear because the only people who have guns will be the police and the criminals. Criminals would LOVE for none of us to be armed. We've all seen how the police are always there to intervene and stop violent crimes before they happen. NOT. They clean up afterwards, and hopefully catch who did it, but that won't bring back your dead loved one, will it.

"A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

I WOULD HATE TO SEE THE WORLD YOU WANT TO LIVE IN.

Anonymous said...

Without guns, you would still be under British rule, or a Nazi. Either way, America would not exist.

Anonymous said...

Guns have a place but I would agree not in a bank or a grocery store aimed at a bad guy. Two guns pointed at each other are generally not a good thing.

Hunt all you want but it is my right not to want that gun near me while I am going about my business. Do you really think you would have stopped the crimes last week with you concealed weapon? Would you have pulled your gun on the criminals and played hero. Scary thought.

Anonymous said...

What if the robber had systematically started killing the employees and customers? Would you have wanted someone with a concealed carry weapon then? It does happen. When do you know if the robbers are nice gentle robbers or sadistic killing machines??? After the first person is dead! You want to step up and volunteer to be the test subject? I didn't think so.

*I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG. *

Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a

*We Deserve It Dividend *.

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000

bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman

and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals
$425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a

*We Deserve It Dividend *.

Of course, it would *NOT *be tax free.

So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.

That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket.

A husband and wife has $595,000.00.

*What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family? *

*Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved. *

*Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads *

*Put away money for college - it'll be there *

*Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs. *

*Buy a new car - create jobs *

*Invest in the market - capital drives growth *

*Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves *

*Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else *

* *

*Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18 +

**including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehmann Brothers and every
other company that is cutting back, and of course, for those serving in
our Armed Forces.

If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of
trickling out

a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed
by one of our candidates for President.

If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult
U S
Citizen 18+!

*As for AIG - liquidate it. *

Sell off its parts.

Let American General go back to being American General.

Sell off the real estate.

Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

* *

*Here's my rationale. **We deserve it and AIG doesn't.

* *

*Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."

* *

*But can you imagine the *Coast-To-Coast Block Party*!

* *

*How do you spell *Economic Boom*?

* *

*I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion *

*We Deserve It Dividend* more than the geniuses at AIG or in
Washington DC .

And remember, The Birk plan only *really* costs $59.5 Billion because
$25.5
Billion is returned

instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

*Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.*

Kindest personal regards,
Birk
T. J. Birkenmeier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the
Republic

*PS: *Feel free to pass this along to your pals as it's either good for
a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85
Billion!!

How do we know that the guy with gun won't fire and try to play hero and start it all.

In my book keep the guns for hunting and stop trying to play hero. A gunman robbing a bank with a gun may start shooting but a cowboy with a gun trying to play hero may start the massacre.

both points can argue all day and let it be said that most just agree to disagree unless you own the gun store and then you want to promote business.

Trying to sell guns on the eve of a robbery only sells to people's fears and those people with guns are the very ones that scare me.

I have a family member that has been held up at gunpoint and the police (not in this community) agreed that they were better off that no one over reacted and tried to fight or be the one that tried to save them. The outcome in their opinion would have been much different and instead of losing some cash and car keys they would have lost their lives.

Anonymous said...

"We no longer have to hunt for food, so hunting is just an excuse." That's a good one. You could also state we no longer have to play baseball as adults because we've been there and done that as a child, so its just an excuse. Baseball bats have been used as pretty deadly weapons. Guess its the same for baseball as with hunting--because its a sport some folks enjoy and because they have a right to do it. I don't know that rifles and shotguns (used for hunting food) were used in the robberies. I agree that anyone carrying a concealed weapon should not engage a robber, but if the robber began shooting innocent people, it'd be nice to have one to protect yourself and others if possible.

Anonymous said...

Well, all I have to say to that is that your relative was lucky. They came up against one of the warm fuzzy criminals who ONLY wanted some money to buy drugs.

Congratulations!

The point is that guns in the hands of good people are never a bad thing, because guns in the hands of bad people are always a bad thing.

What if you stood by and did nothing while a robber took your money and car keys, and then the next night he used those keys to enter your home and hurt you or someone you care about. Do you know what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

Anonymous said...

They had the locks changed and no one came to get them. They took the keys to keep them from following after them. They were not warm and fuzzy robbers but they wanted money not blood. They held a gun to a girls head. Someone could have been hurt and a hero shooting would have intimidated them and someone would have been hurt or killed. The good guys also outnumbered the bad guys by 4 to l and the good guys were in great shape but they knew that acting in any manner would not have been good.

I believe the police know what they were talking about.
They are the experts not someone who just wants the right to carry a gun to protect the world.

Like I said we just agree to disagree but that is America.

Anonymous said...

Your hindsight is 20/20. You say that if someone would have attempted to act against the robbers that something bad would have happened. How can you possibly know that? Don't you think the people who's plane flew into the World Trade Center thought their captors were just going to land somewhere and let them out. Don't you think they would have fought back if they'd known that wasn't the case? You can't possibly know what is in the criminals miond until he starts killing people, and someone.. maybe someone you care about.. could be the one he starts with. I don't know about you, but I could not live with that.

Anonymous said...

I know that everyone is fine and I know that the police said they did the right thing. I do not know what would have happened had they pulled a gun but deadly force could have been just that. When the criminals arrived they had no idea if any of the people had a gun or not but they still acted. The fear of anyone being armed never stopped them so had a weapon been waved at the bad guys it would have not scared them but according to the police created panic for all. I think they are experts on criminal behavior and not me or you.

Again, you use a gun but I will not. We just agree to disagree.

Anonymous said...

Guns are not the problem, the problem is liberals like you who made CAPITAL PUNISHMENT CHILD ABUSE, If children of today could be punished the way that we were thier would be alot less crime and more productive people

Traveler Editor said...

Part of not backing down is being smart.
As the cops say, be a good witness.
Taking a chance by getting into a shootout puts a lot of people at risk, including yourself,so maybe that might seem brave, but might not be very smart.
The goal is not to "win the fight" but to "win the war."
Thinking it through is the best policy.
What are the odds?

« Previous Post - Next Post » The Quick 10: Stories Behind 10 Dr. Seuss Stories
by Stacy Conradt - September 24, 2008 - 2:05 PM
On this day in 1991, the world lost a classic writer and artist – Dr. Seuss (AKA Theodor Geisel). I know the _floss has done stories on Dr. Seuss before, so I thought we’d go a little bit different route today – the stories behind his stories.

1. The Lorax. In case you haven’t read The Lorax, it’s widely recognized as Dr. Seuss’ take on environmentalism and how humans are destroying nature. The logging industry was so upset about the book that some groups within the industry sponsored The Truax, a similar book but from the logging point of view. Another interesting fact: the book used to contain the line, “I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie,” but 14 years after the book was published, the Ohio Sea Grant Program wrote to Seuss and told him how much the conditions had improved and implored him to take the line out. Dr. Seuss agreed and said that it wouldn’t be in future editions.

Anonymous said...

Horton Hears a Who! Somehow, Geisel’s books find themselves in the middle of controversy. The line from the book, “A person’s a person, no matter how small,” has been used as a slogan for pro-life organizations for years. It’s often questioned whether that was Seuss’ intent in the first place, but I would say not: when he was still alive, he threatened to sue a pro-life group unless they removed his words from their letterhead. Karl ZoBell, the attorney for Dr. Seuss’ interests and for his widow, Audrey Geisel, says that she doesn’t like people to “hijack Dr. Seuss characters or material to front their own points of view.”

Anonymous said...

If I Ran the Zoo, published in 1950, is the first recorded instance of the word “nerd”.

Anonymous said...

The Cat in the Hat was written basically because Dr. Seuss thought the famous Dick and Jane primers were insanely boring. Because kids weren’t interested in the material, they weren’t exactly compelled to use it repeatedly in their efforts to learn to read. So, The Cat in the Hat was born, and I must agree: it’s definitely more interesting.

Anonymous said...

Green Eggs and Ham. Bennett Cerf, Dr. Seuss’ editor, bet him thaat he couldn’t write a book using 50 words or less. The Cat in the Hat was pretty simple, after all, and it used 225 words. Not one to back down from a challenge, Mr. Geisel started writing and came up with Green Eggs and Ham – which uses exactly 50 words. The 50 words, by the way, are: a, am, and, anywhere, are, be, boat, box, car, could, dark, do, eat, eggs, fox, goat, good, green, ham, here, house, I, if, in, let, like, may, me, mouse, not, on, or, rain, Sam, say, see, so, thank, that, the, them, there, they, train, tree, try, will, with, would, you.

Anonymous said...

Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! It’s often alleged that this book was written specifically about Richard Nixon, but the book came out only two months after the whole Watergate scandal. It’s pretty unlikely that the book could have been conceived of, written, edited and mass produced in such a short time; also, Seuss never admitted that the story was originally about Nixon. That’s not to say he didn’t understand how well the two flowed together. In 1974, he sent a copy of Marvin K. Mooney to his friend Art Buchwald at the Washington Post. In it, he crossed out “Marvin K. Mooney” and replaced it with “Richard M. Nixon”, which Buchwald reprinted in its entirety. Oh, and one other tidbit: this book contains the first-ever reference to “crunk”, although its meaning is a bit different than today’s crunk.

Anonymous said...

Yertle the Turtle = Hitler? Yep. If you haven’t read the story, here’s a little overview: Yertle is the king of the pond, but he wants more. He demands that other turtles stack themselves up so he can sit on top of them to survey the land. Mack, the turtle at the bottom, is exhausted. He asks Yertle for a rest; Yertle ignores him and demands more turtles for a better view. Eventually, Yertle notices the moon and is furious that anything dare be higher than himself, and is about ready to call for more turtles when Mack burps. This sudden movement topples the whole stack, sends Yertle flying into the mud, and frees the rest of the turtles from their stacking duty. Dr. Seuss actually said Yertle was a representation of Hitler. Despite the political nature of the book, none of that was disputed at Random House – what was disputed was Mack’s burp. No one had ever let a burp loose in a children’s book before, so it was a little dicey. In the end, obviously, Mack burped.

Anonymous said...

The Butter Battle Book is one I had never heard of, perhaps with good reason: it was pulled from the shelves of libraries for a while because of the reference to the Cold War and the arms race. Yooks and Zooks are societies who do everything differently. The Yooks eat their bread with the butter-side up and the Zooks eat their bread with the butter-side down. Obviously, one of them must be wrong, so they start building weapons to outdo each other: the “Tough-Tufted Prickly Snick-Berry Switch”, the “Triple-Sling Jigger”, the “Jigger-Rock Snatchem”, the “Kick-A-Poo Kid”, the “Eight-Nozzled Elephant-Toted Boom Blitz”, the “Utterly Sputter” and the “Bitsy Big-Boy Boomeroo”. The book concludes with each side ready to drop their ultimate bombs on each other, but the reader doesn’t know how it actually turns out.

Anonymous said...

Oh The Places You’ll Go is Dr. Seuss’ final book, published in 1990. It sells about 300,000 copies every year because so many people give it to college and high school grads

Anonymous said...

10. No Dr. Seuss post would be complete without a mention of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! I couldn’t find much on the book, however, so here are a few facts about the Dr. Seuss-sanctioned cartoon. Frankenstein’s Monster himself, Boris Karloff, provided the voice of the Grinch and the narration for the movie. Seuss a little wary of casting him because he thought his voice would be too scary for kids. Can you imagine the cartoon with any other voice?! If you’re wondering why they sound a bit different, it’s because the sound people went back to the Grinch’s parts and removed all of the high tones in Karloff’s voice. That’s why the Grinch sounds so gravelly.
Tony the Tiger, AKA Thurl Ravenscroft (who is also a singer in my absolute favorite Disney attraction, the Haunted Mansion), is the voice behind “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” He received no credit on screen for it, so Dr. Seuss wrote to pretty much every columnist in every major newspaper in the U.S. telling them exactly who the famous song was sung by.

Anonymous said...

Just last night I was reading Green Eggs and Ham to my 3 year old and trying in vain to count the number of words. Thanks for printing them.

My copy of the Lorax also mentions Lake Erie and it must have been bought sometime after my 11 year old was born in 1997. I’ll have to look next time I’m in a bookstore.
