presidential debates

was just watching the presidential debates. Was so bored I couldnt stand another minute. I actually WANTED to see a commercial.
Ok, Ill tick off both sides but .... is this the best either side can do???
Both are nice men and sincere, but it seems to me that neither one of them has anything to say. They aren't disagreeing all that much even.
You can spin it to say your side won, but to someone who is neither rep or dem., just doesnt seem like much of a choice. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Just not sure which is which yet.
The debate is doing nothing but solidifying my feeling that I dont particularly care for either one.
Where's Ralph Nader when you need him?
There are other candidates. Everyone says they dont vote for the other candidates because they dont have a chance ... but .. what if .. what if we all did vote for a different party. It could happen.
Could Ralph Nader do worse?

:)

Pretty swift on puttin' this up James.

Hey, you CAN vote for 'ol Ralphie if you want.

Seriously, we are in a crisis. Way I see it is crystal clear. Do you want your taxes raised? Massive wealth redistrubution? Gov't funded healthcare? Weak leadership that doesn't have the guts to stand up to rogue countries. Abortion on demand with no restraint & taxpayer funding for it? (read the Democrat platform website)
Homosexual legislation forced upon us? (some of us don't want our sons to marry a man, or our daughters to wed a woman)
need I go on....?

Crystal clear. We are in a mess, no doubt. But on these very basic things, the candidates (& their party) make themselves very clear where they will lead us.
I guess the only question is where does the voter want to go?

Mr. voter...your driver awaits.

Who are the other choices? Anyone look interesting? Why does the mass media only cover the big dogs?

I'm so freaking bored that I just finished eating half an apple pie. He said this... No, I didn't, I said this... blah, blah, blah.

At least it got interesting when Sarah Palin was announced. Then, they put her back in the closet and shut the door.

Must totally be all the dems fault for why this economy is in crappy shape. Look what happened when gov regulation(under a republican administration) was taken out of the pic on wall street. No, I don't believe in total government control, but a line needs to be drawn somewhere.

That was the crappiest debate I have seen in a long time, but surely could of been affected because the candidates have been busy trying to bail out the economy thanks to Bush's lack of brains. Both candidates are repeating themselves. Alot of Obama slamming, but listen to McCain whining and trying to get constant sympathy is on my last nerve. I DO respect him for being a Veteran and a pow and fighting for his country, but puhleeze stop repeating it over and over. We already know this. Meanwhile, while this country is focusing on Iraq, Al-Qaeda is taking over in more and more countries. Someone have a good reason why we have more troops in Iraq then looking for Bin laden? Please let me know. McCain said stay in Iraq, to show we are basically strong enough to win and that shows other countries we can't be pushed around. How does that help stop the Al-Qaeda group? McCain has the most experience on foreign policy? Yeah, well take a look where our country is at now. Maybe it is time to change things and stir up the country a bit. I tune out when someone says experience on foreign policy. They aren't doing it all by themselves...so experience means diddly on that issue.

This is true, however, ive become disillusioned.
ALERT- im going to be a naysayer here -
The thing is, Republicans did make those promises to lead us in a certain way, so we gave them the House, the Senate AND the presidency... and what was the result.?
The result has been nothing.
(Abortion remains available on demand, and the other issues you mentioned, ... nothing has changed.
The Republicans have been in power for eight years and what have the accomplished ?

Please dont take that to mean i think the dems would do any better, they wouldnt.

Absolutely nothing has changed.
Actually nothing much changed during the clinton administration..
Since about the Nixon administration, its just been about power and winning. Nothing elsel.

It is on the republican watch that we got into this mess. I know, youll say its cause of the democrats earlier etc., and the other side says the opposite.
THAT is the problem.
Both sides just want power, they have no answers.
Only empty promises.
It is true that we are choosing how we will be led, but based on the track record the last 30 years or so, neither side will actually do what they promise.

That is why I think we need a third party, or another party, that will actually do something ...

Ive heard all the promises and rhetoric about where they will lead us ... i know neither really will.

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm.......a third party might be a wonderful idea if the right person was found. I got a great idea, how bout you run for pres???!!!

JJ FOR PRESIDENT!!!

:) :) :) :) :) :)

Anyway,I sure I will get slammed on that comment especially the Veteran part. I am affiliated with the dem party, but I will vote for another party if I feel it is the right person and this time I do not think it is McCain. I will say this much, If I had to choose for McCain or Bush, definitely McCain!
Later, going to the car show.

I feel your pain, man. Lots of people feel that way, but, the ship is not sunk yet. Though many have made valiant efforts to sink it.

We need REAL leadership.

Hang in there, James.

Please be responsible and civil to each other. Even if you feel the Democrats are a cancer causing scurge on society, it is not politically correct to say so, even if this is true. It may hurt some poeple's feelings. So please be courteous and remember to protect each other.

We have a Republican President, that I agree with, but isn't the majority of the Senate and House Democrat?

The president can ask, but congress has to present and pass anything. If you have a problem it's with the Senate and the House tying the president's hands.

The president has very little authority except to veto what comes from Congress.

>>>>
Yea, but in bush's first term, the republicans had all three.
even then, they used democrat blockage as an excuse.
The dems will do the same when its their turn.
Hey, this naysaying isnt all that bad eh:) :) :)

Anonymous said...

It seems to me the first term went reasonably well. Not that it was perfect, but everything fell apart in the second term, when democrats controlled the house and senate, and literally blocked what the president was trying to do. Even though congress controlled after that, most people still blame the president. Pulosi, the democratic leader even publicly mocked the president almost immediately after she took office. Yet we still lay the blame on the one person trying to control the runaway congress (democrats). Failure of congressional programs are being blamed on the president, and cutbacks and blocks of the presidents direction are also blamed on the president. The president takes the blame for what he is not allowed to do the way he needs to, and also for anything the congress does. Where is the sense?

Naysaying. JJ, you can't come over to our side. Then we couldn't pick on you or have anything to do in River City on a Saturday night.

JJ. A test, before your time, but when was Ark City refered to as
"Stink City".

Traveler Editor said...

, but when was Ark City refered to as
"Stink City".

Dont know, but i have heard that when the meat packing plant was near the river it smelled something awful when you came into town from the south.
add that to the refineries.
id guess the 50s?
when the place was thriving?

Anonymous said...

Hadn't thought about the packing plant or refinery. The "Stink City" came from neighbors who lived close to ADM on West Madison and West Chestnut, when they stated making a starch product. Fine dust all over the Madison neighborhoods and quite an oder, when they hauled away the by product residue. Plant was in the old creamery building, that was a resturant in later years and torn down not long ago after the fire. Source, Bryan Coyne, one of the toughest, sharpest newspaper editors this city ever had. Well maybe it was Rex Woods, who almost got horse whipped at the Traveler office.. Oh for the good ole days...

I heard an editor DID get horse whipped.
about what time frame was that?

Anonymous said...

JJ; It was back in the sixties, and John Ranney was the whiper, but I can't remember who the whipee editor was. :)

Anonymous said...

"Rex Woods" don't remember for sure if Rex was actually hit, as it took place behind closed doors. The riff was over the Traveler running a story about John Ranneys wife [Helen], being arrested for DUI. Not proper to comment, but John and Helen had an interesting history as related to their personal lives. [They were actually seperated at the time had a running battle in District Court over the spoils.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I was there.

Ranney had Ranney Davis distributing and other businesses and was as close to being a Mr. Burns to Homer Simpson's Arkansas City as you can get.

Big fish in a small septic tank. Regarded as owning the town.

Also, a drunk. Whole family was.

Ranney's kid was arrested for intoxicated driving and Ranney was all PO'ed because the Traveler insisted on publishing it along with all other police reports (see a similarity with issues of today?).

Ranney tried to get off a few whips (with a horse whip which was purchased earlier that day from Bryant's), but because the Traveler had the 1920 frosted glass and oak version of office cubicles which extended up into the air about 8 or 9 feet, there was no space to get the whip action going.

(The traveler was in the old Red Cross building, the printing press was in what used to be the old city swimming pool, and an old woman lived upstairs from the Traveler office, but those are completely different stories)

In attempting to defend himself, Rex took a manual Underwood typewriter in what can now be considered to be an "overhead underwood smash" and threw it at Ranney. Apparently he got some meat, because Ranney backed way down.

Rex commenced to carrying a visible sidearm with the statement that if Ranney attacked him again he would shoot him.

Rex reported it to the police as an assault, but the police chief was afraid of, or in the pocket of Ranney and would do nothing. It was a few days before either a pioneer days parade or Arkalalah (I can't remember which) and the police chief's solution was to put both in a public "jail" and get them to have their friends "bail them out".

The police chief was an idiot and a pawn.

Rex went around after that feeling that it was an unprovoked and un-prosecuted assault (which it was) and felt humiliated by the police chief's actions.

Yeah. Mauer Neuer, what we called the rendering plant, stunk to high hell on a good day. On a bad day, it was worse.

I'm thinking about maybe 1965 or 66, just a year or two before the Traveler switched to an offset press and moved to its present location.

You should be able to find that in the Traveler archives. Someone could write a short story about it. Could get national publication, maybe.

Ranney's, Bryants and Sybrants ran the town. Oops. Forgot the real king, the Dockings, as in Bill, the Governor.

With the exception of a few buildings here and there, Ranney, Coyne, Woods, Tuttle, Belisle, Lichliter and Brownie gone, absolutely nothing has changed in Ark City up to today.

Wow, you saw it happen?
sounds interesting.

"Wow, you saw it happen?"

Couldn't actually see all of it because the office cubicle partially blocked the view.

Oops also, Robert Docking, the Governor.
