ideas

There's been some good ideas on here recently.
I do think we could make a lot more of our history than we do. It is a colorful history.
There are some places that make a really big deal out of their history when its pretty bogus really.
One instance of that is the "state of franklin." Back in the colonial days, maybe just after the revolutionary war and after the 13 states were set, some guys west of the Appalachians decided to start a country. North Carolina claimed land all the way to the Mississippi River, but these guys decided to take the land west of the Appalachians and call it Franklin.
The N.C. militia showed up and told them to cut it out. They said "ok" and they faded away.
So now several towns in that area celebrate the "lost" state of Franklin, and their part in the "forgotten" revolutionary war.

Our history is a lot better than that.

Recreating the land run is a cool idea. There are people working on railroad festivals, and that is good too.

We just need some people to step up and get it done.

It would be awfully hard to "re-create" the land run with all those houses and highways in the way, but a celebration of the land run would be a great idea. We could use some year round activities as well. Abilene has a front street and historical buildings that are very cool. Unfortunately, all or most of our historical building were let go until they had to be torn down (or fell down). If the people who came before had taken better care of the buildings, we'd have a much better historical draw than we do now. Go to Bricks and look at all the old photos. Hardly any of that is still standing.

We could try to do a mini land run and involve the kids too, they would have a blast!

Thats a good idea.
of course you couldn't do it in exactly the same place. the exact place wouldnt matter all that much.
it would be a fun festival.
better get started now to get it ready for sept. 16

Is there other events going on September 16th?

So yeah, "better get it started". Great idea! For some of us that has recently become interested in all things city, how does a person go about putting together a mini land run? Who does a person talk to? Where does a person go with an idea? Unfortunately, I do not have great organizational skills, my skills tend to be more on the creative side.

I had the same problem with the music festival last year.,
FIrst, think it through, have a pretty good idea of how you want it to go - it wont go that way, but that doesnt matter - the important thing is to have somewhat of a plan that basically makes sense.

i had lots of ideas last year that never got off the ground, .. you have to learn when to hold em, when to fold em, when to run..

THen talk to EVERYONE you see, ... ask questions of everyone, you never know who has a piece of info you need...
talk to people who have done festivals and such.
look at how other things happened, who was involved, talk to them ..

The city will let you use city property on a first come basis.
also chairs, tables, stage, portapoties etc.,

From talking with everyone you see, you can find a few people who ar einterested ..
then you start meeting with that group and start planning things.

keep it realistic. finding the balance between what you know you can do and what you hope you can do.

your small group then starts the wheels in motion .
think about locations.
what you will need.
different activities ... the scope of the project.

set a date as soon as you can ... sept. 16 is already set, so that part is done ... next is deciding where and how you will do it .. you need a real general plan first.

that will get you started, does that kinda make sense?

I would be willing to pitch in and do what I can!! I would love to be part of something fun for our city. As long as it doesn't require any type of public speaking.. I'm all set. :)

cool
i need help with the music festival too ..
:)

Yeah, I am not much of a public speaker either. I start getting nervous, then my face turns red, then the sweating, then the shaking comes next, then I start losing my voice!! I hate my reactions, probably why I have never got much involved in these kind of things.

find someone else to do things you dont like doing, like public speaking.
thats just part of pulling it all together

Recreating the Land Run is a great idea! We could start at the state line and run south. Once we reach the casinos we can kick the indians off their land just like old times!

Once Ark City takes control of the casinos our budget problems will be over. With all that extra money the city should buy a zebra named Jack Thorton and give free rides to people on their birthday. Haven't you always wanted to ride a zebra down Summit street?

great yea
we could even pay for the windows ... for everyone :)

seriously, lets get this started.

"city should buy a zebra named Jack Thorton and give free rides to people on their birthday"

I rember back when I was a kid growing up here in AC back in the 1940s. There was a city owned zebra named Milly. Story was a local bootlegger won her in a poker game at Oklhoma city. He turned her loose on Summit in the middle of the night as a joke.

The local merchants adopted her as a mascot. She was kept in a stall down at the old Santa fe railroad wharehouse. The owner of the feed mill donated feed to her.

I recall her in the 1954 Arkallah parade leading the parade down summit. She was geetting old then, last time I think I saw her. Can't say for sure but I think they had to put her down not to long after that. She was bureied down by the river around the old 6th street bridge.
