land run

We need to get going on this landrun thing.
Let's talk about ideas first. What ideas do you have?

Sept. 16 is a Tuesday .. so you could have something that day, but weekends are better .. you could have something that day, but have your festival the weekend before. This is also when the Walnut Valley Festival will be going on. Dont know if the museum has someting planned already.

A kids run is a great idea with lots of possibilities .. the field by the old meat packing plant - our concert site, would be a good location.

So we need people to talk to everyone you run into. See what ideas they have. Who do they think would like to get involved. From this we can find a committee to get it going.
We also need people to talk with "official" people. Commissioners, business owners, ..Heather at the museum, the chamber - connie kimsey especially - also the two radio stations ..
How supportive are they going to be? what will their involvement be?

some money will be needed, so we have to figure out how to get money. who is good at begging?
lots of businesses will donate things though, and thats as good as money.

we only have three months, so we need to get going.

So talk with everyone and gathe rwhat info you can ... and what are you ideas.
Post these things here..

Im going to be busy with the River of LIfe Music Festival, so i wont be much help later, .. ill just try to get it started and ill help promote it in the news media.

here we go.

I have an old covered wagon that has been completely restored. Just like the ones used by the people who traveled west in the 1800's.

I could donate it for the festival, except my horse is to old to pull the wagon.

So I will donate the wagon for free if Ark City will let me use "Jack Thorton" the official city zebra to pull the wagon. I know a wagon pulled by a zebra ain't exactly historically correct, but maybe we could get some of the local hair dressers to donate their time and dye "Jack Thorton" a solid color. Make him look like a horse at least until the festival is over.

They do that in Bryant Park in NYC. They play movies on a giant screen every Monday night in the summer. They don't open up the seating until later and there is a mad dash to get a place on the lawn.

Hey i just found out that Heather Ferguson at the Landrush museum is planning a "pioneer days" festival for Sept. 14.
Dont know if she has a landrun planned, but some of you should give her a call and get involved.
THat kids land rush sounds pretty cool.

Would be kind of cool to have a "landrush" for camping spots. You could actually start the festival that way! You could give each volunteer 4 stakes to mark their claim. Then, when the race was over, everyone could pitch tents. We could have live music around a campfire, a grilling competition, canoe races on the river (still love that idea), wagon rides for the kids and some night games in the campground would be fun! Also, could incorporate a small "flea market". Vendors could set up tents with their wares to sell. Perhaps we could get some crafters to do demonstrations. Would even be neat to have local police dressed in cowboy hats and tin stars walking around from time to time. It would be neat to have live re-enactments of "gun fights", etc. performed by some local actors.

Hey, I know a cowboy poet who would help with some campfire stories!

I think it needs to be on a weekend, though. It is during school. We would have to move the date (probably) to get around the WVF. That's a really big event to compete with. Do the "landrush" on a Friday night and end activities on Sunday? For church goers, we could have an outdoor Sunday service? Could be neat.

Really think this could be done on little to no $$ at all. It would be hard to put this together in 3 months. If it is not doable, we should not give up, though. We could always look forward to next year! We should really have it together by then!

I think it would best to have it in Sept along with the museum's festival. It is just to hot and humid during the Kansas summer.

Plus it will give us enough time to have my covered wagon in the festival. During the storm the other day "Jack Thorton" the city zebra got scared of all the thunder and broke free.

Ark City police did a fine job of catching ol'Jack but unfortunately Jack hurt his leg in al of his running around.

I talked to the city office and they said a local vet (didn't get the name) volunteered to look at Jack's leg free of charge. Jack will be fine just needs time to heal up. So by Sept good ol' Jack Thorton will be pullin' the covered wagon!

So we really have a zebra around here? First I've heard of it.

you could do it in conjunction with the musuem's thing, but i think it might be better to join forces with them.
you wouldnt have to do it at the same place or even the same day.

I sent heather an email, and she wrote back that there are lots of tings still up in the air.
Sounds like there's plenty of room for people to jump on her bandwagon.

that would be easier than starting from scratch.
