Access

You can debate where property lines are and federal versus state water until the cows come home. What difference will it make?
Who is willing to do something about river access?

When you say "Who is willing to do something about river access?" do you mean besides rant on a blog?

Those kinds of questions can be blog killers.

Do you practice what you preach?

we have some access so why not work to make it really good and attractive and build on that.

sometimes more means what resources that are available are limited.

Can someone explain to me why a PRIVATE property owner should allow access to a beach so people can go down there to party and ride their 4 wheelers? Chances are the people wanting to go to the area are tearing up the property owners land. Also if a person was hurt while going to or leaving the beach area guess who would be sued??? The PRIVATE property owner. Unless the city or state or another individual was willing to purchase the land from its owner and take care of it, purchase the expensive liability insurance then PRIVATE property owner has every right to cut off access.

Perhaps, that is why we should make the best of what access we are already given publicly. Sally's Landing and what was once open at Newman Park (think that is the one south of town) are available and if we continue to trash them then we have no reason to think we would treat private property any better or that we can claim the "right" to be there.

We need to make the best of what we have and quit demanding more. Of course, that is true for everything and the reason we are "rescuing" banks and the stock market. Wanting more and having the right to more are separate issues. We have the right to what is publicly available so make it great and quit complaining.

My biggest complaint is listening to complainers.

I think creating public access to rivers would be difficult if you do not know who owns the land.

Shouldn't be too hard to figure out who owns the land.
You would have to figure that out first.

Okay here's my request. Put together a group that will dig into the issues of river access. They can tackle the areas that have the greatest chance of being opened or expanded first like Walnut and Chestnut.

They can look into what it would take, what grants are available, how to restrict access so the areas are "open" but don't get torn up by overzealous atv'ers and 4x4's and other considerations like trash recepticles etc. They can work with Massey and Archer and the necessary city departments to determine what the needs and concerns are.

Then, they can offer some well developed proposals that can be put into a formal process for implementation that fits within any upcoming commission plans. It should be possible to raise local funds and receive time and materials donated to this cause.

I would think we could have a broadened opportunity to take advantage of these resources within about a year or two if this process could be started right after Arkalalah.

Sounds like a good idea.
Someone needs to get the group together and take leadership. :_

There is a long time between now and the next River of Life where you will have time on your hands.

Well ill talk to some people.
Actually Ive already talked to several people.
Like so many things, everyone thinks its a great idea.
Its just hard to get people to really catch the vision and get to work.
These projects seem huge.
The hardest thing is getting started.
Also we don't have to do everything at once. One small project would suffice.

The River of Life Committee has already had a meeting.
We've started on next year.
No plans yet, still talking about things like when to have it and where.
