What the mayor said

Here is the mayor's response.
This is part of the story from today's paper.

Kuhn, in a telephone interviw Wednesday, vigorously defended his actions. He said the name was meant to have the slang meaning. “The connotation was absolutely intentional,” he said.
Was it vulgar or sexist?
“It’s a judgement call people will have to make,” he said. “I don’t think so.”
He also said that he got the idea of the character from the movies, “Norbit” and “Big Mama.” Both are comedies featuring African-American men portraying over-the-top black women.
He said he ran everything he planned by CASA officials, and that the audience found it all hilarious.
“I didn’t spring this on anybody,” he said. “I don’t give a damn what people think. It’s a bunch of b...shit.”
Just the act of cross dressing can be offensive, so his act was within the bounds of the show, Kuhn said. He said he also did a fart joke and made a play on words with a tacit reference to the b-word.
Kuhn said he is not going to apologize for anything. Every decision he makes as mayor upsets somebody because that is the nature of the business.
“All this PC is b...shit,” Kuhn said. “We go around walking on eggshells all the time, we don’t get anything done.”
One of the judges, Marian Hedges, superintendent of Central School District. said she did not detect anything racial in Kuhn’s act. She also said a lot of the names and actions are over the top because of the nature of the event. “I certainly was not offended by any part of it,” Hedges said.
Some people in the audience were upset.
Mary and Phil Jarvis, of Winfield, said they understood the name and the racial element. Their son was with them and was offended, too. they said.
Phil Jarvis said he thought Kuhn was trying to talk like a black person in interviews during the contest. Mary Jarvis, the former CASA director, said she knew what the name meant, and would have not allowed it.
As some readers noted, there is a past tradition of white people appearing in “black face” make up and lampooning black and speaking in a derogatory manner.
Kuhn said it was not “black face,” and that he did not really carry out the character. It turned out to be more of an exotic, gypsy-like women, he said.
“I can’t do a black accent,” he said.
He followed that comment by saying that one of his jokes was to ask whether the contest judges were municipal or federal judges.
Asked whether that was meant to be a racial joke about black crime, he said it was not. He said CASA was part of the court system.

The fact that he says he knew exactly what he was doing, AND STILL refuses to apologize says a lot about his character. And none of it is good.

And I like how JJ censores the word "BULL", instead of "SH!T" in his post.

The guy is out of toch with reality. He thinks he can do whatever he wants because he is mayor. Where do I sign for the recall/impeachment?

Oh really, a recall??

How many are gonna actually sign this time??

I do not personally know Mr. Kuhn but I am shocked that he is being so visceral and not taking into account the community's feelings on this.

Mr. Mayor you are a public official and NEED to be politically correct you serve the PUBLIC.

Tell me what you think about this situation at my blog: http://bytedaily.blogspot.com/

He really is an idiot.

Mayors should act like Mayors, not 12 year olds making obscene skits and fart jokes.

Anonymous said...

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Can you tell me under what context he meant by saying, "I can't do a black accent?"

Does he mean there is no such thing as a "black accent" or does he mean that he can't talk like black people?

Seriously, I get sick of people being crude, rude completly lacking in awareness of their actions and then blaming society on being too "PC" when they are called out on it... BS.

So, he admits that he meant it the way it was taken, but doesn't understand why naming his character essentially "Smelly P*ssy" would offend anyone? Surely he isn't THAT dumb?!

Anonymous said...

Amazing.

Earlier in the day my hubby and I were talking about the possible interview with the Mayor.
He said the Mayor would say just exactly what the Mayor said.
So we were not surprised at all by the report in the paper.
Mayor Kuhn "is" Mayor Kuhn.

hahahaha

Anonymous said...

I'm amazed that he's saying that this is politically-correctness gone overboard. Granted there are times when we worry too much about things being PC, but his actions were just vulgar. And now, as I understand it, he's basically lying too. Looking at the photo of him, it is clear that his intent was to portray a black woman. If that wasn't his intent, what was he doing, just portraying a woman with a really good tan??? Sorry Mayor, but "Gypsy"? Also a racist term.

He displays his ignorance in the interview. The mark of an ignorant man? One who can't do an interview without using language that needs to be censored when printed.

As for the people who say they didn't understand what the name meant... ummm... what did you think?

Let's take a look at that name:

Smellishis Poon (or Smellishis Puhn if you like)

Either way, sounds a lot like "smells his poon" What could that possibly mean???? What could poon refer to in this usage? Wow, if I didn't know, I'd probably ask or look it up. Not that it's a word I'd want to Google.

People of Ark City - you should be angry!!!!

We are angry. And We're not going to take it anymore!

Worry about your money going to bail out some sleeze on wall stree who makes more going to sleep than you will in your life time.
Attach importance where it deserves to be.
If the show was all that offensive, cancel it all together, and then go looking for something else to bash, if it isn't the mayor, it will be the chief of police, or the fire captain, or the meter maid, or ????????.

Anonymous said...

The Chief of Police, Firemen, and meter maids in this town know how to conduct themselves in public. It's too bad your friend Mel doesn't!

Anonymous said...

... Mary Jarvis, the former CASA director, said she knew what the name meant and would not have allowed it.

Mary, how old is your very sensitive son who was so offended....not a child I am sure? In the history of this event that I think YOU started, have you ever censored anything? Did you consider censoring the contestant who wore a thong and showed his buttocks to the audience in a previous year? If censorship is a requirement of the event, maybe you should not have made it into a 10 year tradition. Your comments are very disappointing.

Neo, it seems we have a problem in the matrix. How can so many let just one man effect their lives? And don't say "civic pride", we know better don't we Neo?

Everybody really needs to get over this situation. Yes he may be the mayor of this "Christian Community" LMFAO!!! But he did this to raise money for children. All I see is you guys complaining and doing nothing. I don't see you guys doing anything to help raise money for any reason. Everyone should be more worried about our economical crisis.

If this TRADITION was going to be beaten down apon you would have thought it would have happened when it first started...with the crossdressing situation. Our supposable "Christian Community" finds it ok for people to crossdress? Wow, I guess I had a different view on what a "Christian Community" was.

If you all are going to complain about something because you have no life's, then complain about the drugs in your town. The meth, weed, coke, extasy, and all of the abuse that goes on in this town. It's everywhere! Kids can't make it through high school in this town without being offered to try atleast one of these things.

Fight for something usefull people. Don't waste your time on somebody helping to raise money... Can you say "ignorant"??

Unfortunately, Kuhn can't be recalled because of his tactless behavior. This incident provides an opportunity for the community to conduct a thorough self-assessment with respect to race, gender and tolerance. Sadly, there is NO leader in this community with the MORAL COURAGE to step up to the plate to openly challenge his inappropriate actions. He's just not equipped with the critical thinking skills to GET IT. Kuhn only serves his self interests. He has forgotten that he was elected to serve the hard working citizens, regardless of creed, race, gender, or religion. I don't get how this guy can even stay in business. Can anyone enlighten me?

Poontang - Slang for vagina, or sex

If a President of the United States can be impeached for a sex act that he tried to defend and I must say with more tact than Your Mayor Kuhn, then certainly Mayor Kuhn should be made to step down for the embarresment he caused this City, the black and brown community and unknowingly himself.
Kuhn is ignorant, selfcentered and has a lack of integrity for hisself and this community.
The commissioners and the Human Relations Board should ask for him to step down.

Anonymous said...

Ok, first I would like to say that this isn't a comment about Mel's costume or name. I have no opinion on that matter because it did not offend me but everyone has a right to speak there mind! My comment is just about the CASA pageant! I think CASA is a good cause and the pageant is a major fund raiser for CASA. Wellington even began doing it after Cowley County did. It has been going for 10 years so I wouldn't blame CASA for any of this. They put their trust into the participants and trust they will use good judgement. A lot of the participants are leaders in the community so shouldn't CASA be able to trust them? If you want to be mad a Mel, then that's your right but I wouldn't blame CASA!!!

Actual quote from the Mayor:
He got the idea of the character from the movies "Norbit" and "Big Mama."

Then he expects us to believe that he wasn't in "black face"?
Forget how stupid he is, how stupid does he think WE are?

Anonymous said...

Kuhn could have been recalled at least twice in the past year. This event doesn't even come close to either of those situations.

I think other commissioners have tried to correct the situation but fell short on support from the citizenry. I think the people of Ark City like to be abused in this manner.

Anonymous said...

If being PC is bull****, then he obviously won't mind being called:
Mayor Whitey
Mayor Cracker
Mayor Honky or
Mayor Gringo
at commission meetings?

Anonymous said...

Many people in this city donate time and money to many worthy projects. Mr. Kuhn is not alone in his desire to help but most of us do not represent Ark City using vulgar names and implied costumes all with the "goal of helping children".

I do not doubt that his intent to raise money was good but he does deny that his intent to use the name was anything other than what it was. Vulgar.

There are many issues facing our community and nation. We need leaders that will lead us and that we can respect whether it be locally, on the state or national level. I hoped Mr. Kuhn would agree that what he did was offensive to some and that he was sorry. To me, that implies leadership. He did not do that.

He has only made the situation worse with his use of cuss words and tough guy attitude. The people of the community deserve leaders that understand the community expectations. The fiasco was disappointing and needs to be addressed by his fellow commissioners and the community, We can be a forgiving town but we need to hear "I am sorry" and not this is bull###t.

Anonymous said...

Kuhn said, "I don't give a damn what people think."

There, you heard it, Ark City! He doesn't really care at all what you think, or in other words, he doesn't care about you!

How can he claim to be a representative of the city of Arkansas City if he doesn't care what the citizens of that city think and feel?

Just think, if any of you displayed this kind of attitude in your jobs, wouldn't it be immediate grounds for dismissal or some form of discipline?

Anonymous said...

Maybe Mel should just apologize or step down as mayor!! Or Maybe Casa should take the crown away from him to show that in the future they won't support behavior like that!

Anonymous said...

I find it scary and unacceptable to have a public servant who claims to have parcipated in a fundraiser for abused and neglected children and did so using a racial and sexist tone in the event and when he offended many in the community he basically says he doesn't care what we the people think about his actions because that is who he is and he isn't going to change for anyone even though he represents these people. Do we want a community leader like this? No, because there are many good people in this area who would better serve the community. I think everyone should make efforts to have him removed from office if he doesn't apologize and improve his actions. Casa should strip his crown and take away his barbie and title and if they don't step up to the plate then we need to take this issue to their headquarters and demand different leaders. I can't beleive these neglected and abused children would feel good about this fundraiser because it is another example of abuse when it is supposed to be for a good cause.

Anonymous said...

Taking the title away would be a copout.
I think CASA bears some responsibility here, and people should be upset with them too.
The mayor may have gone too far over the top, but at the same time, he was doing what they asked him to. They apparently liked what they saw.
The mayor should apologize, and it would be the politically astute thing to do. But I think CASA should be held just as accountable.

Gotta love small towns. It makes me smile reading all these comments. Like the one where someone said his acts were sexist. Yeah, guys are dressing up like women....go figure.
It's also strange that so many were offended during the show, het the crowd roared w/laughter.
People keep saying how he shamed and embarassed the city. Speak for yourselves. I live in this city and I'm neither shamed or embarassed.
Although it's hard to believe, I'm sure life will go on. And I'm sure it won't be long until somebody discovers the mayor failed to wash his hands after using the restroom and everyone can move on and get all out of sorts about that.
And when that happens, I'm sure the Traveler will be there to report it all.

Anonymous said...

I prefer newscow.net
They seem to provide more balanced reporting.

Anonymous said...

I think both radio and paper are reporting the same thing. Our mayor dressed up like a black woman which is probably not that big of a deal IF he had not chosen to use the vulgar name with back up singers with an equally vulgar name. This is ompounded by his complete disregard that it could be offensive and using more profanity in his rebuttal.

I love it when the messenger is the issue and not the actual issue. Don't blame the Traveler or the radio since they reported the facts. Blame the right party.

Anonymous said...

Obviously it was not too offensive at the time. From what I have heard from those in attendance and what was reported, people were laughing at what was happening and he won the contest. I am pretty sure everyone knew what the poon reference was also. It was allowed to be in the show before it became a big deal. I understand why the paper is stirring the pot on this. That is what successful media does to sell. If it was a family show, I agree that the name was not in good taste. This was a show with people dressing in drag. I would not call that a family show. That in itself in many cases would be considered offensive. Maybe I should look for some cross dresser club on the Internet and let them know about the contest. Maybe next year they can show up and protest the entire event. Seems to me like people should know what type of humor to expect before they even attended the event. I do not see any racial problems. People are always quick to be offended if there is a racial issue. He made himself overweight, why are there not post about offended obese people? Remember the story of the boy that cried wolf? You cry too many times, the time you are actually repressed will be ignored due to the mass of other claims. People have too much times on their hands I guess.

Mayor Apologizes
After meeting with the area NAACP president in Wichita last night, Arkansas City Mayor Mell Kuhn issued an apology for his Men In Tights performance on Sunday that some found vulgar and racially insensitive. Check back in the afternoon for a full story.
"It has been brought to my attention how offensive this was and I absolutely agree that it was shortsighted of me not to see that in the first place. I am sincerely sorry and I sincerely apologize for the offensive nature of my actions. This was not CASA, this was of my own volition, and I take full responsibility for my actions. The buck absolutely stops here". - Mayor Mell H. Kuhn

Yeah, NOW he's sorry.

But last night he didn't give a damn.

Sorry, but I don't buy his "sincere" apology!
Especially since he admitted twice (in Traveler interview and newscow.net interview) that "the connotation was absolutely intentional" and "the whole thing was meant to be offensive in a funny way."

Milton Berle had a TV show in the 50's where he sometimes would dress in drag. It can be done properly under the right conditions. I'm also not too surprised that some people didn't recognize the terms he chose for names. Some people didn't quite get down to the low places others of us enjoyed or endured.

I'm just confused how the mayor doesn't care what people think. This is not the first time we've heard that. It's come up on at least 2 other occaisions that are past but not forgotten.

How much more damage can one man do to our city before we can get rid of him? How do we make him respond to the people that elected him?

Anonymous said...

How wonderful, now we got the NAACP. Lets turn more of the ripple into a hurricane right? Hell might as well. It is funny what they do and do not accept. Did you see this on the links called a digg at the bottom of their story?

"Last weekend, the Mayor of Ark City Kansas performed in Blackface at a CASA Fundraising banquet. This article details our meeting with the Mayor and his response to our question of WTF?" Yeah we all know what WTF stands for. It is so politically correct to use that term right? That type of language is totally acceptable...... I think we know how this found its way to these "politically correct" people in Wichita. Keep blowing the horn, and add to the problem of more people ignoring the noise.

Anonymous said...

Drag is never "done properly". It will always offend someone. I am pretty sure the majority of people over 7 and under 70 know exactly what the word poon means. Lets not be coy.

While I agree that the mayor can be a jackass I think getting the torches and pitchforks are a little too much, afterall how many people sat and watched this skit, laughed and enjoyed it at the time? From the discussions, only a few there were actually offended. In fact, people were so impressed they awarded him the crown. Now the world wants to jump on the bandwagon. YES, what he did was very distasteful, but isn't making fun of a situation- it used to be classified as a roast because its funny but not intended to harm or hurt- part of what makes this fundraiser so fun? I hope that every person with their poker out someday gets to understand the feeling of putting you self out there IN FUN AND FOR CHARITY and then being publically skewered. I too think Mr. Kuhn was crass and do not appreciate his discounting of the situation stating in our newspaper that it is bullshit (the terminologly is unacceptable) but I also feel that he would have never even participated in this very worthwhile cause if he knew that a public stoning would follow. Lighten up folks!!

Because they are ACTORS, stupid! He is OUR MAYOR, How do you not get that? Separate the two then get back to me, Because you'll get it then! You can't even justify a city mayor acting this way with what some actors did in a movie. Stop trying to turn this around on some lame movie. The most stupid person award goes to you! Mel- Give this poster your Barbie!!He is an elected offical and should act in a better manner, he did what he did, He's not a fake actor, He can't PICK and choose when he puts on his mayor pants- He should have them on at all times. Someone once told me, "When you forget who you are, People notice what you do". He forgot who he was and we are all taking notice. He felt comfy enough to make a total butt of himself, I don't expect a Mayberry Mayor, But some TACT and decency would be nice.

It would be different if it were a black guy making fun at white chick's expense- it happens often enough. No NAACP for the white people to cry to or bitch about 'how far this sets us back'.
Its so easy to play the race card but where is the alliance for everyone else? (We don't have black student unions or the NAACP, Sharpton and all that)
Also- he looked like he was trying to emulate a beauty queen where were all the people so repulsed when it was happening? Did the cat have your tongue? Now that its getting so much attention, everyone has something to say. I say leave the guy alone- he was trying to help the charity-not destroy his image.
I'm a female and I've pulled up my big girl panties on this deal- if you don't have a smellishish puhn it shouldn't apply or offend you!!

Boy CASA your gonna have a ton of volunteers next year aren't you? Way to throw old Mel under the bus when things heat up- you gave him the crown after all.

I always thought smellishis meant "smells delicious". My first thought was that he was a pervert, but not a racist.

I do not know him personally, but have had some run in's with him through his business. He talked down to me and was insulting then, too. I'm having a hard time giving him the benefit of the doubt, even though I do not know him enough to judge.
