county election update

After a canvassing of the vote, County Commissioner Gary Wilson was declared the winner by a vote of 1,906 – 1,894, Monday. The vote was so close election night, it was too close to call. Since commissioners are the ones who do the canvassing, Wilson excused himself and appointed Sheriff Bob Odel.
We will have an update on the regular web site later today.
Election night they were separated by 20 votes. By the next day, after counting provisionals, the margin went down to one.
No word on whether his opponent, Bob Voegele, will request a recount. He has to put up $1,000 bond to do that, and I think he forfeits the money if he loses.

We had a story in Saturday's paper.
It is being considered as they may move some operations to other places.
It could happen, and if it did, it would be around 700 jobs that would leave the area.
Its not happening yet. And may not.

So, companies on the may lay off list:

Conoco
Cessna
Beech
Rubbermaid
Skyline

Yes, some of us knew it was coming. Some have been trying to prepare for it for some time. Worst case senario if it doesn't happen, those who prepared will be in good shape finanically. If it does happen those who didn't will hurt.

ConocoPhillips is a merged company now.
The are several plant locations around the country and the world with some management infrastructure replication.
The possibly of reducing the number of sites is being reviewed.
Most sites have considerable building vacancy and it may make sense - according to the CEO and his team, to condense the populations into less sites.

They are principally evaluating two locations in Oklahoma, one in Denver and one in Texas.

not that I personally know ANYTHING on this topic.

If you haven't been following the news. GM is asking for 25 billion to keep their doors open plus another 25 billion to pay the retirment and healthcare benefits -obligations for their ex and present employees!
Here is where the split is going to take place (not necessaily is it only about providing for the poor) but: Who decides and how can you justify one above another when it comes to the bailout!

Good point. GM's retirement benefits are one reason they're suffering. Something there will have to change if they are to survive.

Question:"Who decides and how can you justify one above another when it comes to the bailout!"

IDK. I just know when the tsunami of the downturn reaches KS, I sure would love to have someone to bail me out. ya think...

Oh don't worry your new President will fix the world and the US. He will redistribute the wealth of the rich and give to the poor. Just like Robin Hood would. So no worries just wait for another gov't check.

I am telling you that the CEO SAID that the company would not see any reduction in staffing next year. The CEO later SAID that they would be evaluating where its employees should be located to fit the business plan (which could relocation of jobs from one city to another but he did not SAY layoffs).
The CEO then appeared before his majr investors and offered up that the 3rd Quarter 2008 After Tax and operating expense Net income was $5.2billion.

The CEO has SAID all these things within the past 20 days.

But he did not SAY layoff. Therefore, there is no reason to think that our area economic profile might change and that retail spending might be impacted and that sales tax revenues might dip by reason of a few hundred jobs leaving from a traditionally economically strong neighboring county just across the state line.

Now is that more clearly stated?

Gary Wilson is not beholden to anyone. I listened to Voegele at 2 forums and he agreed with Wilson on every issue brought up or said he didnt know enough about that to have an opinion. I think Voegele was picked to run because they did not like Wilson's rural fire dept vote (something to that effect). You may not agree with Wilson on everything but you will know where he stands on an issue.
