speaking of holidays

Speaking of holidays, here is something that might get you going.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A local activist's proposal for a national holiday to honor Barack Obama's election as president inspired enough Internet chatter to briefly overwhelm a newspaper's Web site.
Sonny Scroggins, who has been involved in various causes, including efforts to promote black history, says he wants to celebrate the election of the nation's first African-American president.
"I feel like Nov. 4, 2008, is a very important date," Scroggins said Tuesday. "It's when America grew up."
The Topeka Capital-Journal published a brief story on its Web site Sunday about Scroggins planning to have regular brainstorming sessions about pushing for the holiday.
The Drudge Report took note and soon, so did bloggers from as far away as the Netherlands. Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin mocked it on her Web site.

It seems black people voted for Obama because he is black (or at least looks black), but others voted because they wanted change. But now all we here is first black president.

How sad would it be if that were the only reason he was elected.

Why not, they are already talking something like a 500 billion stimulus after the Dems take control. They can just throw the expense in the package.
The only people that get a paid National Holiday are the Gov and related businesses.
BTW: The proposal at this time is to build alot of infrastructure.
I wonder if our representatives local and national will get anything for our area and if they did do we have people capable of getting it done? Or are they content to just draw a pay check?

I think anyone who is honored with a national holiday should have earned it first. George Washington was not honored because he was the first WHITE president, but because of his achievements for America. And we don't even celebrate his day individually any more, just in collaboration with Lincoln on "Pres. Day" (a bit of an insult for great leadership). If and when Mr. Obama achieves the status of Washington & Lincoln, should we not celebrate it on the same day as the others? See there, we don't have to pay federal employees for another day off.

Let's see we have Black History MONTH and a President's day. Is this not enough? I realize that perhaps America "grew up" but I think in many ways that to honor the first black president unnecessary. Let's see what he like as a president. He may be awful...who knows. But honor someone because of color is raciest. Next president could be hispanic...will we have a day to honor that person. What if the next president is a woman??? Again do we sit aside a national holiday for that? Let's celebrate how far America has come in their attitudes but lets not be stupid.

I think his proposal for a holiday was premature. At least wait until his job is done!

So, you're saying that black people could not have voted for change - they 'had' to vote for him because he's black.
Yet, the whites voted for him because they wanted change.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.... that just does not sound right to me. It sounds TACKY!

im sure some black people did vote for obama because he is black, while some white people voted against him for the same reason.
hopefully those two group cancelled each other out.
there are many reasons people vote for a candidate.

Maybe one of these days we will all go color-blind and this will not even be an issue anymore.

I would like to think the most important colors are red, white, and blue.

And in honor of our vets... all the blood that was shed, whether they be white, black, hispanic, native, asian, was all RED!!

Agreed, very well stated.

@November 13, 2008 4:53 PM Why don't you clean up your vile, filthy mouth. Your remarks are uncalled for and I am sure I am not the only one tired of it.

They already have a day- MLK Jr. Its not like Obama is a saint- white presidents don't each get their own day. The guy is full of hot air and reverse racism.

I think a more mature goal to strive for is to become color appreciative. My goodness, we have not, in my lifetime, hosted or hoisted dialogs on the validity or veracity of previous POTUS and whether or not folks voted for them based on race. Even when there were no ethnic candidates, I still voted and with the same discrimination over the proposed policies, priorities and focus.

Other than the Late Gov. Wallace, I do not even recall one, in my lifetime, who campaigned on race issues.

I will not pretend that the President #44 Elect's race did not gain my attention. However, I bristle at any one who is ignorant enough to think I am ignorant enough to vote for someone solely for cosmetic reasons.

Had I done that, Palin would have been the VP. She is much better looking than Obama.

I admired Senator McCain for his military heroism. Yet that was not a compelling argument for making him the commander in chief either.

I think history will talk about Obama's race. We need to focus on his policies. Right now, as far as I am concerned, he is of no significant race but his administration is on the clock (actuially,in less than ten weeks).

He has a colorless auto industry, a colorless mortgage industry, a colorless Middle East war, a color less trillion dollar deficit and a colorless growing unemployment rate. There is no defined energy policy, no leadership on the banking industry and no direction for our nation's automakers and no notion of what victory looks like in the war.

These things matter. A few retro folks angst over race - POTUS or anybody really - does not matter. It does not matter what color you are, if you harbor hatred over someone of another color, you simply diminish yourself.

God, who is colorless, shall judge us all and those who hold hatred in their hearts will not be judged favorably.

Charles-

I think you are spot on in your analysis on being color appreciative.

I was the one that wrote about becoming color-blind but merely as a statement that we all need to come together as one society and quit this immature hating based on the color of someone's skin.

We, as a society, have come a very long distance in my lifetime in this regard but obviously the end of the road is not visible and a lot more work needs to be done if we are to be truly "one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all".

Good luck with that. I too wish that we could all just elevate our mind and move on.
