Porter on Vick: 'All it was was dogs'
Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter commented on the possible reinstatement of former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and, as usual, Porter shot right from the lip, according to a report on EPSN.com. Vick was convicted for his role in a dogfighting ring and is serving time in a Kansas federal prison. He's scheduled to be released next summer.
"He's already been punished enough," said Porter (referring to Vick's possible reinstatement after serving his sentence), who owns a pair of pit bulls and a Maltese. "They gave him his penalty. He paid his penalty. What else should they do to him now?
"All it was was dogs. They act like they don't even like pit bulls anyway. That's the funny thing about it if you want to get back on that topic. I got pit bulls, I got to put them under a different breed just to travel. So you can't even fly pit bulls nowhere.
"It's a breed they don't care about. It's not like he was fighting cocker spaniels or something that they like. They don't really care too much about pit bulls."
My comments
What Vick did was bad. But, it just seems to me that people are too outraged and the punishment too severe.
Cowboy's Pacman Jones has repeatedly violated NFL drug policies, has seriously hurt people in fights etc., and didnt even miss a whole season.
Rams' DE Leonard Little killed a woman while driving drunk. I think he missed maybe half a season. If even that.
Little and Jones received full pay through it all. The Falcons want money they paid Vick returned.
Isnt there something wrong with our priorities here?
I love animals. I hate dog fighting. But is our culture sending the message that its ok to kill people while driving drunk, or to do weird stuff while on drugs, but not ok to do bad things to animals?

The United States Humane society played a large role in the conviction in this paticular incidint. There are people always out there advocating for animals, I being one of them. Where was the Madd, Sadd and whatever groups when Pacman Jones was/is doing all this. Just like what people preach in AC, gotta do something to get results.
Respect for human life is on the decline. The sad part is that people feel justified in disrespecting others to advance themselves. Kids aren't being taught respect and parents don't understand why kids grow into inconsiderate or abusive adults when all they do is learn what they live. A child is only as good as the love and values invested in him.
Both of these posts offer good thought. My opinion is mor relevant to my beliefs. We have become one of the most unforgiving societies in existence. The penal code defines an appropriate punishment for a deemed crime. Once that punishment has been meted out and the penalty met, humans ought to have their rights restored. As long as we want to continue to punish in some punitive way for the balance of a person's life we should expect no less judgement for our wrongs in God's eyes.
If Vick is marketable and able to pursue his profession, he should be allowed. I also believe that voting rights should be restored to anyone who has served their sentence and been released.
I do think child sex offenders ought to be kept away from children. I think we should encourage anyone to move away from an obvious weakness even if it not linked to a criminal act.
But my goodness, learn to forgive and give people an opportunity to redeem themselves.
That is the faith I preach. Jesus death on the cross was simply buying us a second (or 3rd or 4th or 5th...) chance to get it right.
Amen!!!!!!
Thanks Charles. I agree.
We condemn a person for lifetime even after sentence served. It's insane. Every application asks "have you EVER been convicted...".
We condone murdering the unborn, yet we throw the book for fighting dogs. We spend $$$ saving the whales. But, let someone sleep on a bench as we turn our heads.
We label someone "sex offender" for life while we condone pornography and frequent stores that sell it in Ark City. I could go on and on.
Thanks jj. These things need to be talked out. Vick was a scapegoat.
DJW, Charles,
I agree, what a shame, it has come to this.
Vick...just a pawn in someones chess match.
Dogs rule, humans drool!
I don't understand how people can defend someone that could let that kind of harm be inflicted on an living, breathing animal puposely. I don't think Vick shows any true remorse and says what the public wants to hear just to get a lighter sentence. I have to question his character and thoughts of any living thing if he could purposely let these dogs fight to their death.
I dont think anyone was defending Vick.
It just seems to some that there are worse crimes that do not get punished as severely.

Lord, is that you? I have been praying to you and waiting for an answer and here you are on the WEB exposing people and their thoughts, character and motive.
I can wait a while longer on those matters I put before you but, let me ask you this while you are on here, Lord. Please don't pass final judgment on Mike Vick just yet. You gave each of us the right to ask and I am asking that you forgive him and grant him an opportunity to demonstrate whether he is contrite and true or just another one of them who try to pull the wool over their own eyes as they pretend to be sheep. Can we just please convey your forgiveness onto Mike, just this one time. Maybe the prayers of thousands of simple folks like me are enough to influence his course and redeem him.
Thank you Lord for even letting me make this request. And thank you in advance for the answer. In your holy name I pray to the heavenly Father. Amen.
Really Charles, how long have you followed this story? I watched this from the beginning, saw his behavior. Do you have a dog? Maybe I should sic my dog on yours? What if my dog kills yours? What are you going to think of me then? I will say its only a dog!
Don't sit there on your religious high horse and tell me that someone can inflict that kind of cruelty on an animal and not be capable of that kind of cruelty of a human life. Wow, now I know the real Charles. Sorry I ever voted for you. While I am at it. I can't stand 99% of sports so i don't give a hang what they do to him.
Lord, I hope you are a better listener than the person who just tried to intercept my prayer. Regardless of how critical others may be, I will still pray for forgiveness for myself and others just as you did while hanging on the cross. That was a death much more cruel than any known to modern man. Yet, you showed us how to forgive and even demonstrated compassion for those who wronged you, wounded you, jeered ugly words towards you or simply does not agree with you.
Sounds like I lost a friend but you can touch his/her/its anonymous heart and show them the worth of forgiveness also. And, I can be thankful that you are known as a friend to the friendless (just in case everyone else chooses to turn their back on me too).
In your precious name, Amen
Addendum: "Wow, now I know the real Charles. Sorry I ever voted for you."
Honestly, in some ways, I too am sorry that folks voted for me. Serving took me away from the puplit and, too often, from my job. I lost opportunities in both places.
Fortunately, I do have a loving family AND Savior who remained then and now supportive. Politics is fickle. Family is forever.
I know I pray for anonymous the critic because I pray for my community and all who live here.
Come to my church some Sunday and you will "get to know the real me" even better. Look forward to seeing you. And yes, you can remain anonymous. Oh yeah, we take anonymous donations also.
