Good saturday morning

I haven't posted much lately, but the conversations have been good.
It seems like some people are starting to catch the vision, or at least understanding my vision for a musical Arkansas City.
The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield stated as just an idea, and look at where it is now. It has also "evolved" musically. It does not have all that much bluegass anymore, and they have dropped the name.
We need to keep this going.
***
I enjoyed the talk about the upper floors of the downtown buildings. That could be a great story, or series of stories.
This was the Old West. Its not too surprising that there would be interesting things going on.
I read from the traveler that at one time there were six saloons downtown on Summit. It was during the times of the prohibition movement, and there was a huge debate over them.
That debate was much large than the beer garden at Arkalalah. I think Carrie Nation came and spoke.
***
Another thought: There has been some talk on the blog about promoting Ark City and attracting industry. There are mechanisms in place to do that.
But I think we need to promote Ark City within. We need to convince the people of Arkansas City that this is a good place. Maybe we need to do that first?

Ok so you talked about the boys losing to McPherson but what about the freshman boys they beat McPherson and are 5-0. You mentioned boys, girls and freshman but where are you mentions on the other teams.....

Traveler Editor said...

Our policy on that is to cover the varsity. Coaches from other teams - freshman, jv, even middle school - need to send us game info If they do, we will put it in.
We only have one person for sports, so coaches have to help out.

JJ, Who cares what you think.. we all come here to see what Zach Bryant thinks!*

* that was sarcasm for you humor impaired folks.

Ha
I agree totally.

I was reading about saving money on utilities and one of the money savers is air drying your clothes. So I decided to try this idea this summer and I need to know where you can find the "back in the day" clothes lines?

Anonymous said...

Well not at Wal-Mart. How about buying some rope and tie it to a tree

Zach Bryant for City Commission...at least he will tell you what he thinks without bullshitting you.

I think ZACK WOULD GET MY VOTE FOR SURE, HE IS A REAL DOWN THE EARTH REGULAR GUY, JUST WHAT WE NEED IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES, AND HE IS HONEST, SOMETHING WE DO NOT HAVE AT THE MOMENT

Have you seen the moon
No, not the one off the balcony or the one at the stoplight with the open car door. Not the drive by 4 window moon shot. Not the pressed ham on glass or the double inverted or double inverted double pressed ham on glass.

Just a plain old full mooooooon!!!

Warning: these should only be performed by professionals!

Oh for the days when streakers were real men and women and not just perverts.

That dank moon!

If you want to know what I think then just click on my pic following JJ's blog. Heck that would even allow some people to bash me without screwing up the topics here. Warning you do have to sign a name on my blog but that doesn't mean it has to be your real name.

Commission time is past I couldn't run if I wanted too now. Thanks to the people with faith in me. I will continue to try and do you all proud even though I will not be in power (thank God!- ha I said it before any of you could). Continue to spread my words of love and free speech and maybe one day the critics will realize they are just chasing their own tails.

"But I think we need to promote Ark City within. We need to convince the people of Arkansas City that this is a good place. Maybe we need to do that first?"

I've got a better idea. Instead of empty propaganda, why not work on fixing the reality?

Make Ark City a better place and it will be obvious and undeniable.

When people bring up poor perfoming high schools, sub-standard housing, high taxes, marginal retail and low paying employment, there are no words, slogans, or mottos that will work to convince them otherwise.

Don't try to convince everybody that reality is not real. Change the reality of Ark City and perception will follow the truth.

Everyone will believe Ark City is a better place when it IS a better place.

Traveler Editor said...

I think its better than you realize.
You need to go see other places.
BUT,
You do have a point, that people need to improve things.
Things that need improving will improve when people believe it is possible.
so what are you doing to make it a reality?

Anonymous said...

Pointing out that it can be done and that the jawboning that everyone is so fond of just doesn't work at all.

That's what I'm doing.

You have a better position to start the shift. Use your paper to point out what can be fixed and how to fix it and how other communities with the same problems improved their lot.

Can I change the high school?
(housing? jobs? retail?)
No I can't.

But you can.

Anonymous said...

Right now is the perfect time to make these changes. The economy sucks, which means other towns won't be as competitive for economic development (because there is no market), prices will be better for construction issues, good first rate employees will be cheaper to bring in, and costs will be lower overall.

If Ark City gets in gear now, they might actually become a player when the economy comes back and turn the town into a really nice place. It will take 15 years and can start now.

You make a very good point!
I know of someone of a younger age who is looking to build a house. He lives in Oklahoma and approached a builder about the cost.
He was surprised at the fact the builder was willing to make less on the structure just to stay in business. (Keep his helpers and pay his expenses.)
Now is the time when those who can or will make a difference and leap forward!

What if the Travler and Mr. Bryant got together and started a Fix it column in the Travler. Easy how to fix it ideas with products sold at Bryants Hardware (How to build a clothes line ect...) Maybe Mr Bryant could even write the column. He does seem to have a knack for words.

I think that is a great idea! But not just Bryant's, how about every LOCALLY owned business?

Woods Lumber
Schmidt Jewelry
The Eagle hunting shop
and so many more...

A weekly column with a different buisiness giving out tips and hints or even questions that readers send in. Nothing to complex or technical, just simple DYI projects like clothe lines :)

I'm down for it. Someone want to speel check me first though. Haha. Seriously that was me making fun of myself:)

Looks like the ball is in your court JJ :) How 'bout it?

It would promote local business...

Ok
someone volunteer to coordinate it.
ill get it in.
fair enough ?

See there is part of the problem some people think the only ones to suggest or comment on things has to be the business owner down town, and they already do that but just not in formal in the paper for everyone to see. More than likely they might lose revenue if the were to make a public statement in the traveler. None the difference what about Joe the rec center volunteer coach or the street sweeper (got watch out for his job) he probably should keep his mouth out of it could cost him a merit raise, none the less when everybody who thinks they are in charge decides to listen (not hear) what people have to say and invite all people in this town to have say and to be made like what they say is a help instead of a complaint, we will be stuck in the dirt. We all put our time and money into this community and regardless of a person status or ethnic race or religion we out to be taken as contributors not pains in the ass (two ami pia's).
We all want to be a part of the solution but we are not allowed because we are just normal JOES whose money from are hard work keeps those ass's in their offices 39 weeks out of the year.
Yea I said all that but I am trying to help open up the closed minds and lips of all the people in this town, which should be a community that looks at itself only to make it better here. We should not be trying to always compare ourselves to city similar in size because they are just that similar not alike. Every time we say well another or other cities are doing it like this, they are not us, I do not think that other towns our size (similar) lost as much income as we did at one time in the eighties from which we never did recover did they.
Well I got to stop I heating up

JJ put the ball back in play in the deep backhand corner of the sever court (Mcenroe) cannot return that in play. See you at the US OPEN JJ

The suggestion was for a handy man advice of the week. I really don't see how Joe may lose his job at the rec if he wrote a little article about teaching children to dribble a basketball. Please try not to be so negative about every idea just because it is on here. i still think the advice section would be cool and should even encourage the average Joe to throw something up every now and then.

I see your point, you have a very valid excuse as to why you can't help.....NOT!

Have you not noticed that the majority of the people on this forum are "Anonymous"? Which means one of two things...

1. You can post your ideas here without worrying about your boss knowing who you are..

2. Anonymous is their real name, and Anonymous has became the most popular children's name in the US!!!

Taken the top spot from Dakota, Cheyenne, Tundra, or what ever SUV parent's are naming their kids after.

RE: Clothes Line

Take a cord or rope tie one end to a sturdy immobile object. This can be a tree, post, etc.

Stretch the cord/rope taut and tie it to another immobile object.

The clothes line should be at roughly chin level. Attach clothes.

Remove clothes once dry. Clothes may take longer to dry on damp or rainy days. Moonlight is not a good subsitute for sun light.

JJ feel free to print this as the first DYI article......

Change starts from within. All those who really desire change need to look within themselves and try to find 1 thing they can do to make the world better- its that easy and doesn't have to be huge.

oh yea so you say is that the reason that all public commission are so void of the towns people down there. You just want to show kids how to dribble better than their parents ( what happened to community pride)

Anonymous said...

I think some have all the community pride required to make this a great town. Others find it easier to complain whenever an idea arrises. Honestly what do you think it does to community pride when you spend all your free time running the community down? This blog shows that no matter what the idea is someone is going to bash it. The best part of this community though is the fact that bash all you like we still endure.

------------------------------

Heres what I want my clothes line to do:

I want it to be of an unbrella style mounted on a pole that allows it to turn. So I can stand in one place and hang a load of laundry. The spinning action might even promote faster drying.
I want it to be collaspable so I can store it in my apartment or garage and out of the yard. Especailly, helpful if I live in an apartment or rental.
I want it to be sturdy enough to last and cheap enough that I can afford it.

Backward vs. Forward

Would it work?

Would it sell?

Who is going to do it?
