interesting story

Here is an interesting story about Obama and the possibility of creating a mandatory youth work program. 18-20 year olds would have to work for two years for the public good. They would receive very small pay, and two years of college tuition when done.
What do you all think. Click the link to read the story

Will it be called the Obama Youth?

My kids don't need any mandatory service to get into college. My kids are not going to do any mandatory service to anyone as long as we live in America, the land of the FREE. Freedom is NOT taking two years of someones life away from them when they don't need your welfare to get into college. This may be a good idea to young people who have no other way to pay for college, but those who do should not have to do any mandatory service to Obama. Is this the beginning of his civillian security force we've heard about?

Not all kids should go to college.

It would apply to tech school too.
It wouldnt be welfare, they would have worked for it.
But I wonder what would happen to high profile college athletes?

It is a government program, just like the military. When I joined the navy, I was basically told "you belong to the US. You are now US Gov't property. We can do anything we want with you". So, in this program, what guarantee do you have that your 18 year old son is not placed in the Army, instead of digging ditches in Alabama or pouring concrete for a road in California? It is a civilian draft.

youth should learn reverance and respect this is a good way to do it, i also feel there should be a two year mandtory military service to your country

I understnad that not all kids need welfare and this isnt welfare it is the cost of Freedom, freedom is not free it has extreemly high cost and is much more complicated than non freedom

I couldn't access the article, but what is the difference between that and required community service thats already a part of some HS and college graduating requirements?

[not that I agree with the mandatory aspect]

In today's world where kids are still living with their parents and watching cartoons in the afternoons at age 28, it makes good sense.

It shouldn't be mandatory, especially for those who can do employment or college without it, but a little work ethic exposure wouldn't be a horrible idea for kids, especially the urban gang delinquents.

Might help them grow up before they are 30.

Penny
i think the difference is the word "mandatory"
lots of countries require military service.
There are things you could learn there that schools do not teach - such as self discipline, study habits, work ethic. etc.

So where is our freedom in all this? If Bush had proposed this, you libs would be howling to the moon, but because it's your new messiah, anything goes. It looks like a backdoor draft to me, and nothing but death and taxes should be MANDATORY in these United States.

I can't open the link but his website states that it would be part of the middle school and high school requirements. No different than requiring you to take P.E., math, or english to graduate or forcing you to go to school. It is 50 hours a year so no more than 1 hour a week doesn't sound ridiculous to me.

And it isn't mandatory for college age people but in exchange for 100 hours of service -roughly 2 hours a week you would receive a 4,000 a year tax credit.

No where on his website does it say it would be mandatory for 18-20year olds.

Hysteria at its best.

From the Obama website:

"Create the American Opportunity Tax Credit: Obama and Biden will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a new American Opportunity Tax Credit. This universal and fully refundable credit will ensure that the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or university and make community college tuition completely free for most students. Recipients of the credit will be required to conduct 100 hours of community service."

Seriously, this is an opinion piece written from someone at the Christian Science Monitor.

This is NOT an official Obama policy.

JJ- really you should add a little more detail and a link that works.

I like the the idea of voluntary service in exchange for some sort of credit (monetary) towards college. Kind of like the GI Bill (sign up for a couple of years service, get money to go to college).
I am also in favor of a mandatory 2 year stint in the military. The structure of the military helped me go from a kid to a responsible adult. It also helped my 2 nephews, who joined after Junior college. It isn't for everyone, but I think it would help many. If Pres. Obama's Civil Corp has the same structure, I think it would work out pretty well.

Um, no thanks. Maybe you needed the military to become a responsible adult but... I didn't.

Maybe an option instead of going to jail sure... but mandatory... hell no.

...and maybe we should have mandatory birth control for teenagers, to stop unwanted pregnancies.

Well, I was unable to open link, and was just going by JJ's writings... I should have known better.

i think mandatory military service should be required of every American citizen.
we as a people think we have freedom owed to us because we are American.
However you have a very heavy debt to pay for those who gave their life so you could be free.

Never think freedom is a right, its not, it is a gift fought for with blood and life.

Respect it and do your part to maintain it

"i think mandatory military service should be required of every American citizen."

Cool.
Let's have a vote.
Everyone that votes yes can serve in the mandatory military service.

Funny isn't it?

I think you wanted to vote about "other people" having mandatory service.

Didn'tcha?

America needs fewer people telling others what they can and can't do.

Now that the Nazis are out of power, America can be a nice place again.

Mmmm lets see a free $4000 for college and the average cost per semester starts at most major colleges about $6500 so if mom and dad want to save money on the first year when most college kids are trying to find themselves and cannot state what they want tomajor in I think it is worth it. To many kids just want to party the first so if it saves the parents $4000 whats wrong with that. And if they decide college is not for them you could save yourself a little money.

So

Honestly there are several Americans that do not need to be put in the military. The exact reason the military won't take just anyone and the same reasons not everyone can own a gun. Just because we don't all bleed in the sand does not mean we are unAmerican. I thank a soldier every day and I pay extra taxes hoping that will help fund more equiptment for them but in my case I had medical issues that caused for me to be unable to serve. So in this new manditory system being praised by some do I get a free pass? How about Lebron James? If he had been forced into the millitary and lost a leg is the government going to then pay him the millions they just cost him? How is the rest of the world going to view us if we expand our army to everyone? Again thank you to all the men and women who serve our country by fighting for freedom but remember that doesn't have to always be with a gun. At times the pen is mightier than the sword.

The only ones that want a mandatory military service are those who would never serve and those who would unnecessarily send the country to war.

During the last mandatory draft, all of the rich east coast and west coast republican kids didn't ever have to serve, or were trained on planes which were to never be sent to war (like W).

The kids fighting and being killed in Viet Nam were clodhoppers from Nebraska, Alabama and Kansas who had no political or economic influence.

If we had a war that was a real need, there are plenty of people for the "all volunteer military" to serve.

Police actions in Bolivia? A lack of mandatory service will prevent that. Insufficient troops.

When the government is too stupid for diplomacy, they go to war. And the war lasts longer than the people who decided to go to war.

DEad Rabbit

I am sure there are many reasons military service isnt for everyone, i used to say the same thing every morning when i had to run six miles there are many places you could have been put as a serviceman.
Serveing the country is not nessasarily going to war the military is more involved than just killing, we have an emence amount of jobs tht need filled that are not subject to being in a field position.

Anonymous said...

I retort that serving your country is more than just joining the military. In most cases I believe if the military doesn't want a person as a grunt then they are probably underqualified for the other positions you are talking about. And once again what of those with medical conditions? Will the military provide the same insurance for those people? Like I said it is an alright idea other than there are too many variables that make it implossable

Anonymous said...

Zach found someone who writes as badly as he does. haha

Anonymous said...

Zack you medical conditions will make no differance, the american public now pay for medical cards and inssurance for people who are not even americans so why not a gympy store house clerk, or a gympy floor mopper, of a blind box folder,, the point is you can contribute, choseing not to as you have is just an excuse.
Like many americans excuses are all you know, positive action would be actualy doing somthing about your situation which is obvious by the front of your store , your a follower and not a leader the military needs followers you would be perfect, no insults intended here , just stateing facts

Anonymous said...

Oh i think zachy is more involved that some of you think.

I typed a long paragraph that told what I do for this community then thought you aren't worth it. Honestly JJ said that 12-15 different people post on here regularly and I know 8 of them. My point being that 4 to 7 people on this blog have a bad opinion of me and speak frankly out of their rear ends when it comes to my life. The blog isn't about me. I enlisted which I thought I stated earlier and was rejected. If you wasnt to continue the debate on my life then click on my picture (2nd post on this blog) grow up and quit wasting everyones time here. I come here to debate issues in local government while it seems others come here to boost their ego by running me down. I've challenged JJ to post a Zach bashing blog once before maybe I need to do it again. You people are the problen with the world not I and I sleep just fine at night in knowing that.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Gung Ho just needs to leave Zach alone and if military service is so freaking great, he should enlist himself.
In reality, he is some old git who has no possible exposure to ever being sent to war.

That is the kind of idiot that created the Viet Nam draft and sent good honest American kids over to die in a war that had no purpose, just like Iraq.

Nothing has changed in Viet Nam, it is still communist, but *today* it is a preferred trading partner with the US. Our buddies. Just try to buy a shirt that isn't made in Viet Nam. (try to buy one made in the US).

Funny thing is the same folks that sent US kids to war there are the same ones who made it a preferred trading partner. Idiots. Mental midgets.

In 5 years Iraq will have an islamic theocracy, run by a psycho imam and we will be playing footsies with them over oil. Same thing.

So if military life is so great, don't let me stand in your way to enlist and go get blown up by some nutcase with a homemade bomb.

A true patriot would work to end the Iraq war.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The CIA trained and funded Bin Laden. What a bunch of morons.
