Why i am here

What was the primary reason you came to A.C.?
If you made a list of the top ten things that help you make your decision what were they in the order of priority.
What were the top 3?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Alright
My wife was in Winfield taking care of her mother. I was back in South Carolina. We lived apart for about a year, and i decided to try to find a job here. Her mother had cancer for a few years and was to the point she could not care for herself. We made the decision for joyce to come back and take care of her. I stayed back in S.C. That was interesting, living apart essentially.

I had a really nice job there, but ... thought it would be an adventure. I was working for a newspaper, was not editor, and pretty much did what i wanted, even set my own hours and did a lot of freelance work .. the paper i had worked for shut down, and i was hired by the competition, i had worked for them less than a year when joyce came here to take care of her mother.

I interviewed a few places here and kept my eyes open for anything within 150 miles of winfield.
Lord have mercy Blackwell .. sheesh anyone who doesn't like ark city needs to go over there and take a good look around. Also interviewed in Shawnee, and was real impressed.. also Newton, and some other places.

Anyways, the job opened up here. Actually i almost got hired 6 months earlier by Kim Benedict.
We were in negotiations and i called back to tell her i would come for the interview and the seatons had bought the paper, and there was no opening.
but it opened up again six months later. The editor then put off his quitting for a while .. i guess ?
Truthfully I liked winfield better at the time. I lived in winfield the first few months we were here.

So her mother died a few months later. There was no longer a reason to stay here.
About six months later - we had been here a year, the folks in south carolina wanted me to come back and even offered me the job of editor there.
So we had to decide.
An aside, my wife 's family is from here. she still has lots of cousins etc in the area, but most are around winfield.
She did talk me into staying here for another six months. That deadline came and went.

So the question then becomes, why did i stay? I can still go back to s.c. at anytime to my old paper, they are an old family and take care of people they like . they dont need an editor, but they would make room for me. They are crazy, but still a fun group.
also ive had some other chances to leave .. other opportunities, but ive stayed here.

Reasons in order.
I like the people here. I have made some really good friends. Thats No. 1 ... Do i like the people? I have lived places where i didnt like the people or the aura of the community ... arkansas for one..

I love my church. that is huge to me. If i didnt like my church - or didnt have one - id be miserable. and wouldnt like it here. There is opportunity there for me to be involved too, so that is big.
I like the history and character of the city.
I see potential here to do other things ... like run a music festival, ... and im thinking about figuring out a way to open a place to have music regularly. maybe food even, but i dont want to get into the restuarant business. Maybe someone else could do htat part.
Also, ive been surprised, to find that i like the rivers and the geography around here. I have a campsite year round on the walnut river, and love it out there. Its not the beach, but it will do.,
I love the quiet, the nature,
Also I do feel like I am making a difference in the community, through work and through church.
In S,C. I lived in a county that had 300,00 people, and another county just across the river, had 500,000 people. There were advantages - any food you could dream of available at anytime ...
but ... i was just a number.

I also like working at the paper. I like putting out a paper every day. Of course there are always issues with work, and things you might not like, but ... its still a fun gig.
Wish i could do more sports. :)

Housing is cheap. We have a nicer house here than what we could afford in S.C>, even though I made more money there. It is interesting to compare prices. Housing and food are much cheaper here, utilities, taxes and hte like are much higher here...

So thats why im staying here. 8 reasons.
I do miss S.C. at times. Do you know what collared greens are ? oh my, i could sure use a plate of collared greens over rice, some barbeque pork or fried chicken, with some sweet tea, rolls and maybe some apple pie ... oh my goodness :)
The food is the thing i miss most about south carolina, that and the mild winters..

There ya have it.

If you are seeking barbecue pork ribs, you cannot do better than the Stage Coach in Newkirk.

Yes. They are great.
But Carolina has its own style of barbecue sauce. Its not better, just different. And stagecoach doesn't know about Collared Greeens. :)
Also Head Barbecue - if the name is right - in Ponca City, is great.

If your so hungry for those foods then get in the kitchen.... I love chinese food, But I don't have to go to China to get some.

I know.
Carolina pork barbecue recipe:
Buy pork.
Boil it.
put it on plate.
Sauce: mix 2/3 vinegar to 1/3 barbecue sauce.
squirt it on boiled pork.

Not barbecue.

Just trying to be funny. ;)
You are right. Carolina barbecue is not the same. Every once in a while Stagecoach will have "pulled pork". If you take in your own sauce, you might be able to recreate the Carolina flavor.

Ask about mustard or turnip greens. You do find that in Kansas.
Very similar. Generally served with small bacon bits and vinegar pepper sauce.

The last post makes me sad and illustrates what happens to discussion not only on this blog but in the community. A simple comment and someone has to be snippy about it. We don't really listen to each other or think about how our comments either sound or look. Common courtesy and consideration is disappearing so fast.

Reality is that collared greens can be cooked at home but it would be NICE to be able to find them here. What was gained by the response and the attitude?

Anonymous said...

I don't think you meant Lagonda's post but the one preceding that was "snippy"

I think they dont grow here.
Fresh ones are the only ones worth eating.
i wouldnt give what comes in a can to the hogs.

Hey JJ I here state line bar and grill is for sale. I always thought a privacy fence out back with a stage and patio would make that place rock. You could do live and some local music on many nights, still serve dinner indoors and esentially become a hot spot. With all the land out there I think that place may be have the most potential for what you want. Plus it just may draw some people to town from the cassinos and Oklahoma. Just an idea.

Do you know what collared greens are ?

You bet they do. They grow real good. I grow them myself. Just have to start them as winter is ending. The homegrown ones are so much better than the ones in the local produce sections. (though I will eat the grocery store ones if I'm really desperate for collards) Might try the Farmer's mkts too.
I grew up in the South so, am very familiar with the dishes you mentioned from S.C.

mmmm..good. You can put a bit of vinegar on them too. A bit of southern heaven. Collards & cornbread! :)

Where was this story JJ?

Pulled from KAKE

Ark City Police Locate Neb. Runaways, Discover Signs Of Abuse

On January 6th, 2008 at 7 p.m., Arkansas City police officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of West Kansas Ave. in reference to two juveniles who had runaway from Columbus, Nebraska and were believed to be in the area.

Officers located the juveniles and they were brought to the police department for processing. Once at the police department officers found evidence that the juveniles were being abused and that is why they had runaway.

The Columbus Police Department was contacted and the information officers received was passed onto them. It was decided that the juveniles were to be placed in Police Protective Custody pending further investigation.

They had apparently had stolen a brother's car to get to Arkansas City, and that was returned to him on January 7th when the brother came to Arkansas City and picked the truck up.

Thse aren't the same guys that were stopping people at Wal-Mart that the poster wrote about on the flip side blog are they? Sounds similiar.

JJ, I am glad your here because, in my opinion, the Traveler has been quite a bit better the last 5 years or so since you and the Seaton family have been running it.

JJ some news for you I just learned of. I guess on the water bill issue last night it was said that Salvation Army, Red Cross and local churches could help those in need. Red Cross is not allowed to help with water bills and Salvation Army can help once but they have to apply for the Fema money it isn't just there. (Realize I heard this at the Salvation Army meeting so I haven't acctually talked to Red Cross- hope I'm not speaking out of turn) Some of the negative comments about our friends and neihbors of the community by the commission upset me too. I am going to remain possitive but not all people in need are alchoholic cassino dwellers. How many lays offs have happened lately? I just feel that not all facts given at that meeting were correct and would like to see the Traveler contact the Salvation Army officers and the Red Cross in order to help everyone gain a better understanding. Once again I believe in our commission and hope them the best but ask that they please show a little more tact.

I think the native greens are Polk, Doc (Sp?) and Lambs Quarter. I don't know what they look like in the wild.
I remember a eldely relative who used to wilt them in bacon bits, vinegar and oil.
Interestingly enough on her death bed at 97 yrs. She was worried and repeatedly ask everyone if they knew her recipe for egg noodles. So she was sure it would be passed on and not lost.
Why is it they just don't taste the same?

Anonymous said...

Is that an actual quote from someone in the editorial about drugs in the city? If so, I'd love to know who said that.

Not that i know of since ive been here
but you never know.
anyone have any info on that ?

State line has been about everything. It has exhisted about as long as Ark City (Little Chicago days). I have heard story that the room above at one time was a whore house but the same with the Maytag building and the Osage. In answer to your question I believe that Larry and Cheryl Baker own the building.

Anonymous said...

I've lived in Ark City for 40 years and yes, it is rumored to have been. Zach is right about the others also, and who could forget the Grand Terrace? Definately was!!

James, you can get collard greens here and anyone who's ever had down home cookin' knows what they are and how to fix em' take these guys advice and create your own recipe- the fun is in experimenting till ya get it right!!

Traveler Editor said...

and who could forget the Grand Terrace?
>>
Where was that? was that a hotel?
I have read in the traveler, late 1800s, the second floor of a few building downtown were notorious.
even zach's building, though it may have been a different building in that location.

I might try to talk with the owners ... who knows, weirder stuff has happened eh ? :)

If I can get some fresh collars ill try it. maybe next spring?

Anonymous said...

My building was built near the turn of the century. All pictures I have from before that show it as being 1 story or a tent but if there is anything you have seen or read about it then please let me know. History is cool. Some time you need to see some of the upstairs around town, 1 in particular doesn't ever set right with me. I don't believe in ghosts but there is some bad juju in this one. I'm leaving the name off do to the fact that I don't know that the owner would want it advertised. Strother was a landing strip for alcohol smugglers during prohibition, the tunnels (most of which are gone now) were escape routes from the town, we used to be called Little Chicago, there was a gambling hall underneith the Osage, and yes I've heard countless stories of the Terrace. These were the stories I grew up with when I was little (and my family wonders why I like "The Godfather" so much). This is what I mean by embracing the past. Wouldn't a mobsters day in AC be kind of cool? Zuit suits and tommy guns for everyone haha.

Anonymous said...

There is also a rumor that Bonnie and Clyde hid out in the State Lines upstairs. The man who told me that is deffinately old enough to know.

Hey JJ:

If we could have gotten a Lowes, then we would have great restaurants that might have served southern style collard greens.

But no Lowes and no greens

ZACH i like history a lot too.
do you know about buckskin joe ?
one of the founders of ark city.
i have done his character .. and like doing it.
got any info on him ?
im always looking for new insights.

id like to see some of the upstairs around town.
ive not been able to figure out exactly where buckskin joe s store was ..

are yall watching the game ?
im definitely a gator hater.
so, go sooners

Dead Rabbit said...

Hadn't ever heard of Buckskin Joe but I'll start asking around. I do have a lot of cool old pics up at the store if you ever want to see them.

Zach

Anonymous said...

I wonder if some of you all that are still upset about the Lowes are the ones that still have McCain signs in their yard.

Anonymous said...

Honestly I think it's to see if they can rile me up. They can't. I single handed killed Lowes like the evil demon it is BWAH HA HA HA! Just ignore them and eventually they will go away.

Anonymous said...

JJ,

I am the owner of the building that Zach has said has bad JuJu. To my knowledge it was used as a brothel during the land rush. I would be happy to take you up there and give you a real taste of Ark City history. It is not in the best shape do to water damage over the years, but we are working on cleaning it up and dream of someday returning it to its glory. Minus the girls, of course.
We of course do not believe in the "bad juju" its just an old building.

Anonymous said...

Uh huh let's see you go up without a flashlight then. Haha

Anonymous said...

"I wonder if some of you all that are still upset about the Lowes are the ones that still have McCain signs in their yard."

That proves it McCain Suppoerters are the ones that stopped Lowes from coming here. Lets see 73% of Cowley County voted Republican, so 73% of all cowley residents did not want a Lowes

Anonymous said...

Zach single -handedly killed Lowes and Home Depot? Then the AC mafia was stopped from getting the hospital on the north end of town? Gee now what will AC Industries come up with next? Print their own money to bail out their bank? LOL

Anonymous said...

How about a 1% sales tax to replace windows in all the downtown buildings?

Anonymous said...

Well why not an additional 1/2 cent sales tax to help the Mayor clean up his dirty property, it is a blight on the city as you come into town

Anonymous said...

How about those are both stupid ideas. We have enough taxes you stupid ass.

heav you ever sold teflon tape to hold up artwork?

I was told it is better than duct tape and releases easier?

Ive got rolls of tefflon for 49cents. Don't think it will work though.

No way man on the overnight. Bad juju.

Jill Wineinger's building is the old maytag building, where Sally's is now. I too have heard stories that building is haunted. I don't really believe that part, but I know for a fact that civil war era items have been found in the walls up there. I wouldn't be afraid to stay there- its just dirty and not kept up. First Intermark has some very interesting underground corridors that lead downtown. JJ- that is something you should research. During prohibition there were tunnels all over downtown leading through the buildings. Some have been sealed- others are still open. I believe Sparks also has some of these and also the whole blocks of HNB, USB & Graves. They were all connected by tunnels.
The Grand Terrace was on a side street between 6th & 7th street, can't remember exact sidestreet it was on (I was young then) but I think it was somewhere near the road that leads from 7th to Country Mart. Used to be a big two story brothel/bar. I believe it was mainly for African-Americans. I've heard there were shootings and lots of other action there over the years. I think it was torn down at least 20 yrs ago.

Anonymous said...

Opps! Probably more like 30 years ago!

Traveler Editor said...

Jill
Give me a holler and Ill go up there.
Id love to see it, and any other upper stories of buildings downtown.
Buckskin joe's store - the athletic grocery store was across the street from what is now union state bank.
He watched jesse james rob the cowley county bank from his store.

we had a story a couple years ago about the tunnels, complete with pictures and drawings.
they are still there.
some of them anyways.

Anonymous said...

I might be wrong but I believe my building was built in 1887 and the civil war ended in 1865. I have never heard stories of things being found in the walls. I have found and kept a lot of bank statements from the early 1900's Even a Pamphlet about how to build a bomb from the early 1900's. I would like to hear the factual stories of things being found in the walls. I don't disbelieve them them building has many stories and serects. JJ I will be happy to give you a tour. We can get together at some point.

I am pretty sure that the Grand Terrace was a block west of Charles Jennings house on maple on the opposite side of the street. There is also some low income apartments around that area, I think in the same block. Last time I drove by (about a month ago) there was a house for sale in the spot where it used to stand. I bet Charles might know more about the old Grand Terrace sight. I am betting it was torn down between 15-20 years ago.

Anonymous said...

the GT was not a whore house, nor was it a mafia hangout trust me it was nothing like the masons lodge in ark city is today
the GT was a place where black and white got together and had some beers and communication unlike the masons

you have no idea how much this city is run by the masons, Mel Kuhn is a master mason, Rod Philo in the water department is a high ranking mason these are the guys that control the city and how it is run, Mel Kuhn is also the Head of the Hospital board and will Mark my words!!! be the general contractor of the new hospital building,, you cant fight it if you do you will end up commiting suicide

Anonymous said...

Is there a whorehouse in Ark City?
Where is it?

Anonymous said...

there is a whore house in ark city it is at 110 west central

Anonymous said...

as for the sale of sex,, the only place that happens in this city is in the bedrooms of married individuals

Anonymous said...

110 west central that was a good one

Anonymous said...

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe the Grand Terrace either caught fire or a tree fell on it or something like that? I remember it wasn't just torn down, something happened to it before it was completely removed.

Anonymous said...

Hey 7:44 PM, I posted over a month ago that Mel had texted all the docs and much of the staff and board about keeping the hospital where it is (this was just days after the election). I suggested JJ look into it and was met with a "you investigate it" type response. My sources are inside and reliable but, naturally, reluctant to come forward. In fact more than one person said to me, "I can't believe he still wants to have this meeting." You seem to have an inside, have you heard any more about this?

Traveler Editor said...

. In fact more than one person said to me, "I can't believe he still wants to have this meeting.

which meeting was that ?
kuhn was against the new hospital site, but changed his mind.
i thought about deleting the 7:44 post, but didnt.
he is a public figure, he can take it, so i left it :)
but he did change his mind on the hospital issue..

people are reluctant to come forward. but they should come forward .. that is how change happen.

Anonymous said...

Yes, he publicly announced he changed his mind. He did not announce he changed his mind about the 'secret' texts to the contrary. As for change happening when people come forward - the change for them would be an involuntary change of jobs.

Traveler Editor said...

He did not announce he changed his mind about the 'secret' texts to the contrary.
>>

I think im not understanding this part.
WHy does it matter that he sent texts to the docs saying he was against it, and then changed his mind?
what am i missing

Anonymous said...

They must not be very "secret" if we are discussing them here? Most of Mel's secret texts are the people watching him try to work, screwing with him. I know of a few "secret" texts during commission meetings saying things such as "your flys unzipped" and such.

Sorry but I've heard way too many stories about the GT from people who were there. It was deffinately no house of saints. As for the masons hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, Have you ever gone to one of our pancake feeds? The average age is around 60. Watch out we are slowly (very slowly and with handicapt stickers and canes) taking over this town. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Fear of the unknown. Trust me the masons are no threat.

Anonymous said...

I agree Zach. That guy is off his rocker and I know first hand what the Grand Terrace was like. I had plenty of relatives who spent so much time there that their wives had to drag them home. I remember the stories of my grandma and aunts. That place was no house of saints to be sure.

I think names should be left out of this blog except for those posting stuff. And seriously, the Masons? I always thought the ones you had to watch out for were the Kiwanis and the Lions.

Anonymous said...

I've heard my father speak of the GT. It sounded like a nice place to get some beer and test your fighting skills with people of another race. I'm pretty sure it was downed around 15 years ago. Good riddance!

Anonymous said...

All right! If we can not attract industry because we do not have the resources (tax incentives and labor force- still not sure I'm buying that one), then let's go with the music festival thing. If we start it at the south end of town where JJ has his concert, it could grow from there. I still think it would be cool to have camping, concerts, boat rides and such along the river. We DO have a lot of river frontage, so why not use it? Then, local shop owners could have bands and dances upstairs.

By the way, Cherokee Strip RV Park benefited from the Bluegrass river disaster last year. They caught some overflow of displaced campers who had such a great time, they promised to return next year. I hear they are planning a concert. Why not just go with the same week as Winfield's shindig and let it grow thru AC? Offering some different music choices could be cool! We could save a bundle in advertising, too! :)

Anonymous said...

Not a half bad idea. Or we could do ours the week prior seeing as how a lot of the campers come here that far in advance then people won't have to choose between the two towns.

Traveler Editor said...

cool idea
ive thought about moving ours to the week before the bluegass festival.
a lot of people that go to that in winfield are not from here anyways.

I like the week before even better.
