"Traveler: There seems to be confusion. Commissioners didnt know they were being charged with criminal tresspass.
Scott bothered that charges were filled and they were told they were not."

Why are they surprised? Can they not read? I posted the link at least a month ago to the Police Departments own webpage that says they are charging kids who skate on the sidewalk with criminal trespass. The page has now been replaced.

Seems the left hand is lying to the right hand, or visa versa.

Any officer who would charge a kid with a misdemeanor for skating on the sidewalk is a @$$! For that matter, any chief of police who would direct their officers to do so is also an @$$. My opinion only.

What would you call a kid that would blatantly disregard the law ?
Or one that would blatantly disregard the safety of others just for his own kicks?
Just curious?

I can't believe Justin Thurber is requesting a new trial. He said sorry to the family ( admitting guilt) and now this? If I could, I would punch him in the face. This family has been hurt enough and shouldn't have to go through anymore crap from him.

Standard procedure.
Thats the first appeal in a murder case.
There will be other defense motions at the sentencing.

I might call them a hooligan. Or a typical teenager. I have a pre teen son, and when I told him that skating on the sidewalks uptown was a crime, he couldn't believe it. He said "everyone does it". I had to order him never to take his skateboard uptown.

If what you are really saying is that they deserve a misdemeanor on their record for skateboarding on the sidewalk, I would disagree. Imagine a young person, just starting out on their career, fresh out of college where they excelled, always having to tell a potential employer that they had been arrested in the past... to always have a misdemeanor arest on their record... that is just plain ridiculous.

I don't agree with skateboarding on the sidewalk either, but to charge a teenager with a crime for doing so.. a crime that could haunt them forever.. that is just as wrong as it gets.

Of course, most cops in this town won't look at it that way, they will just look at it as another arrest on their stat sheet for the month. Helping them reach their "goals".

You do not have to report misdemeanors on job applications, .. its just like a speeding ticket.
Lots of people think laws against marijuana are ridiculous, and everyone is doing it .. .so why should people be ticketed - arrested - for that?

What gives the kids the right to disobey the law and not expect to be charged?
Im all for them working to change the law, but the law is still the law.

Seems this mostly concerns those concerned about skateboarders--what about the bicycles that are on the sidewalks almost every afternoon? They are supposedly banned too, but are they getting ticketed and charged? I can see fines and possibly losing your board or bike if you don't obey the law, but to have the charge on your record is rough--guess you have to be charged to be fined. There are LOTS of streets & sidewalks in town to do these activities besides downtown until a recreational area can be built for them, or other parking lot arrangements made.

To the people of Arkansas City,

This is a letter of appology. Today Bryant Hardware is no more. It was a shock to me as well not in the fact that I didn't know it was happening but that I didn't know it would happen so soon. The reason I appologize is because I didn't live up to the standards of Bryant Hardware. I could not maintain the Yes We Have it motto, I did not always provide the best of help and quickly I found I could not compete with the big box stores. I'm sorry that many feel I helped stop Lowes from coming here. It would have been another hardware option that could have helped better serve the communitys needs. That being said I would also like to say thank you. Thank you to the community for shopping local and for giving my store a shot, thank you to all the wonderful people and personalities that frequented my door, thank you to the other businesses that stood behind me, most of all thank you for allowing me to be a part of Ark City. Though I don't know what the future has in store for me job wise I want everyone to know I am proud to be from Ark City and I will continue to strive to make this the best place on Earth to live. I will continue to lead the skate group and remain a possitive role model in their lives, I will still coach as many little league teams as I have time for in order to teach sportsmanship to the younger generation, and I will continue to speak out when I think anyone is being wronged. I am here to stay, my son is here, my home is here, and my friends are here. This is the town I love and I will remain here. I appologize one last time for taking the direction of this blog the wrong way but I needed to say that. Best wishes to all.

Zach Bryant

Only stoners think this. Along with the "God put the plants here for our use" arguement. Stoners are the biggest justifiers in the world.

"You do not have to report misdemeanors on job applications, .. its just like a speeding ticket."

Maybe not the jobs that YOU apply for. Trust me, many jobs do ask, and even require a lie detector test. Hell, the same officers doing the arresting have to pass a lie detector test and answer the question about being arrested. They could even be kept from getting a job in law enforcement because of a past misdemeanor.

A speeding ticket is an INFRACTION, not a misdemeanor. You shouldn't state things as fact if you don't really know. You could at least add "I think" in there or something.

I am not saying that they should not be punished. I agree that they should not be allowed to skate or ride bikes, or rollerblade, on the sidewalks uptown. I am simply saying that they can be charged with an infraction, just like jaywalking or speeding, and not branded a criminal. It may take the city council adopting a new infraction to get things done, but I think there might be something on the books already. I don't know why they (Wallace) decided to start arresting people, but it's ridiculous, and needs to stop. Maybe after the third offense I could see it, but even then it's overstepping.

Maybe you should do a google search.
Thats why they are called misdeameanors. THey are infractions, not serious crimes,
They do not have to be reported on anything to anyone and will not keep anyone from getting any job.

Actually Crimmal Trespass would have to be reported to the Military, and any gov job. Once these kids are finger printed it is a part of a data base. Also many jobs are asking about lesser crimes. I think the app says have you ever been arrested.

Yep son, I can see it now, you ruined your life by getting arrested and charged with criminal trespassing, for skateboarding on downtown AC sidewalks! No, not funny, really at all.........
Seems to me the commission and pd need to pull it together on this one real soon.

I don't understand why the focus is on the punishment rather than prevention!! It is pretty simple. Parents know where your children are and do not allow them to skate and bike where they are not welcome.

I don't need to "google it" I have lived it. Try getting a government job without reporting a misdemeanor. I'm sure you didn't need to, but jobs that require any type of security clearance does.

And there is still a big damn difference between an infraction and a misdemeanor, no matter what you or google say.

For those in previous posts who haven't experienced the downtown sidewalks as a pedestrian with the bikes/skateboards, you might have been the one who was nearly nailed by a high school age guy on a bike today. This did happen to me. The rider was going so fast that if I'd been another 6-8 steps faster there'd be no way he could have stopped. He didn't see me until he had passed the end of the building. If he'd hit his brakes, the bike would have swung around and still hit me. That cement would have caused some serious injury or worse. Twice in the last week there has been a group of 4 middle school kids on the same sidewalk going at a pretty good lick. I'm hoping the punishment isn't too severe as to effect a person's future, but something does need to be done. I agree with Anonymous @3:09. Parents need to be guiding their children and their activities. HOWEVER, I have also seen adults do the same, maybe not as fast, so shame on them.
